The bull jumping ceremony is a coming-of-age ritual of the Hamer young men who want to get married.
Female relatives danced and invite whipping from men who have been initiated recently, showing their support of the initiate and their scars give them a say on whom they marry.
Witnessing the ceremony is an experience you are not likely to forget. Call Bereket to create your own experience around Omo valley.

Ethiopia's Kara people are renowned for their attention to appearance. They practice ornate body art, decorate their faces and bodies with chalk and ochre for rituals, pleasure, courtship, and scare off rivals. They also practice scarification for beauty and showing off achievements and pride.
The women usually wear a cowskin skin loincloth, decorated with beads and cowry shells and grease their hair with red clay.
Is it time for you to meet some of the wonderful tribes of Ethiopia?

There are more than 90 distinct ethnic groups in Ethiopia, the largest being the Oromo, and the Kara the smallest.
The beautiful Kara are known for their attention to appearance, with extraordinary body and face painting rituals using ochre, white chalk, yellow mineral rock to paint themselves. They are semi nomadic and grow Sorghum, corn, beans, pumpkins and peanuts.
Sorghum is also fermented to make beer. The older lady in the photo is making beer outside her home in the tribal village.
To visit the friendly Kara coordinate with Bereket. It is a great introduction to Ethiopia’s tribal communities and a memory that you will cherish.
We encourage you to engage respectfully with the communities and make contact with people beyond taking beautiful pictures.

The bull jumping ceremony is a coming of age ritual of the Hamer people. Young men must run back and forth across the backs of a row of cows or castrated bulls. The boy must be able to conquer fears and get through the task to qualify to his own cattle, get married and raise children. He is ridiculed if he fails.
Once he passes the test he is blessed and an animal skin is draped over him, to the sounds of rapturous cheering and celebrating.
Coordinate with Bereket for the next bull jumping. This Rite of passage is a great opportunity to meet the Hamer in a time of riotous and joyful celebration.
We encourage you to engage respectfully with their community.
