If your thirst for exhibitions wasn’t fully satisfied during Helsinki Design Week, fear not!

A group exhibition at Hotel AX’s public spaces is bringing forgotten works by emerging and established artists back into the spotlight. Curated by Niklas Hallman, the exhibition presents artworks in dialogue, creating a fresh context and platform beyond their original displays. This autumn, you can explore works by Taru Happonen, Timo Andersson, and other notable artists.

Helsinki Design Night was the perfect way to celebrate the closing of our main venue last night!

Paasivuorenkatu 3 is hosting two installations inspired by HDW’s annual theme Underneath.🧊
Introducing:

Aalto ARTS Summer School
EMBODIED REFLECTIONS
(2024)

The interactive installation consisting of multiple screens describes the international, multicultural and multidisciplinary learning and co-teaching process of the Aalto ARTS Summer School, as well as the ideas and questions emerging from it through reflections. This installation highlights relevant, timely topics such as collective practice-based learning, brave experiments, multidisciplinary collaboration and the need to produce solutions for major global issues through art, design and digital media.

The contents of the work have been compiled together into a coherent whole based on the documentation produced by the summer school participants. The installation was designed and produced by Heidi Uppa, a designer and coordinator of the summer school.

⭐️Heidi Uppa is a Helsinki-based designer specialised in concept design, food experiences, branding, visual communication research and the development of design education.

Helsinki Design Week has commissioned the work as part of the ”Underneath” festival theme and its main event programme at Paasivuorenkatu 3. Explore the works and their creators at helsinkidesignweek.com.

Paasivuorenkatu 3 is hosting two installations inspired by HDW’s annual theme Underneath.☁️
First up we have:

CEILING UNDERCURRENTS
Liisa Ryynänen, Matti Ahopelto
(2024)

Ventilation ducts are modern building artifacts. They are constantly present in our everyday environments, attached to the underside of ceilings, and on and beneath surfaces. In design processes, ducts are often concealed and made invisible. Their architectural essence is defined by their hidden presence. The site-specific work, created in collaboration between artistarchitect Liisa Ryynänen and sound artist Matti Ahopelto, explores how objects that are indirectly perceived in everyday experiences enter into a new kind of interaction with space and the visitor.

⭐️Liisa Ryynänen (b. 1994, Rovaniemi) is a Helsinki-based artist-architect who works with site-specific and situation-specific installations. In recent years, Ryynänen’s work has focused on experimental fieldwork conducted on demolition sites of modern buildings, during which they document the buildings and collect building materials for their works.

⭐️Matti Ahopelto (b. 1987, Alajärvi) is a Helsinki-based composer, producer, musician and sound designer. Ahopelto is known as a multidisciplinary artist working in pop music, experimental music, contemporary art and film. His sound works have been heard at EMMA, Kiasma and Amos Rex.

Helsinki Design Week has commissioned the work as part of the ”Underneath” festival theme and its main event programme at Paasivuorenkatu 3. Explore the works and their creators at helsinkidesignweek.com.

Helsinki Design Week and Antilooppi, both known supporters and developers of vigorous city culture, share a similar set of values, which continues to make a strong ground for collaboration for the second time round. ✨
The common goal has this year been to get to know both the identity of the Hakaniemi area and the venue location, while developing it together with design professionals and the residents of the city.
🪜🎨🛠️
For HDW, it feels meaningful that Antilooppi refrains from simply leasing out premises and instead, focuses on creating flexible property solutions that are in a close connection to their surroundings. This means sustainably developing existing properties by bringing them to life, while not only developing the site but the whole area around it.
🏛️🌷🛣️
Helsinki Design Weekly met Antilooppi’s Director of Customer Experience and Concepts Johanna Sarekoski and Markus Viiperi, Interior Architect and CEO of Franz Design Studio to discuss the possibilities of the space.
📝🔍💭
“Paasivuorenkatu 3 is a prime example of our actions. It is a location that is very typically Helsinkian in that it was left under-utilised. It is also quite quirkily hidden behind a somewhat busy marketplace and a corner that hides a miniature park. The locale also comes with a bundle of history––which we cannot wait to uncover and bring back to life,” says Johanna Sarekoski. “Something which Helsinki Design Week are also extremely good at as event organisers!”✨

❣️See you next week! ❣️

The Embassy of Spain is taking over aperitif slot on 12 September in the Design Diplomacy series.🎈

🇪🇸 – The Residence of the Embassy of Spain in Helsinki is one of the emblematic works of the famous architect Aarne Ervi, designer of other buildings in Helsinki and in other Finnish cities. The building, which bears the name “Villa Himberg”, is considered one of the most representative buildings of Finnish architecture from the 1950s, with large glass surfaces. Built in 1954 for Arvo Himberg, it includes the Chancellery designed by Spanish architect Ángel Fernández Alba.

Raisa Álava is an artist based in Bilbao, working in the fields of illustration, printmaking, and ceramics. Her work is inspired by both lived and imagined experiences, collective memory, and especially random thoughts.
Some of her recent projects include editorial illustrations, artwork for music bands, solo shows, workshop programming, and site-specific installations like mural paintings.

Maija Louekari is a Finnish print designer and illustrator. After studying interior architecture and furniture design at Aalto University, she has designed patterns for Marimekko, mainly for home decoration, but also for fashion, bags and accessories. The patterns have been seen in big collaborations like Adidas x Marimekko.
Maija works with hand-drawing, paper cutting and painting. In work and also in personal life, Maija trusts in intuition and love.
