RNZ - Fijian youth leader Broderick Mervyn is youngest recipient of Vanuatu independence medal
Grace Tinetali-Fiavaai, RNZ Pacific Journalist
The youngest recipient of the Vanuatu Independence Commemorative Medal says the country's leadership in recognising and appreciating emerging leaders sets a powerful example for the entire Pacific.
Fijian citizen, Broderick Mervyn, 28, was honoured in a ceremony at the State House in Port Vila.
Mervyn said the honour not only recognises his contributions to youth empowerment through the 'Professionalising Youth Work in the Pacific' modules; but also underscores Vanuatu's commitment to excellence.
"As someone of Rotuman lineage who grew up in Fiji, I am profoundly honoured to receive the prestigious Vanuatu Independence Commemorative Medal, marking me as the youngest recipient from Oceania," he said.
Vanuatu President Nikenike Vurobaravu presented the medal as part of the festivities commemorating Vanuatu's 44th year of independence this week.
Drawing comparisons to the US Presidential Medal of Freedom awarded to notable figures, such as multiple Olympic gold medallist artistic gymnast Simone Biles and swimmer Katie Ledecky, Mervyn said the award emphasises the critical importance of nurturing young talent.
"This accolade is more than a recognition - it serves as a clarion call to all Pacific nations to uplift and empower our emerging leaders, fostering a culture that believes nothing is impossible and always strives for excellence."
Mervyn said Vanuatu's precedence in championing emerging leaders and addressing Pacific challenges provides a blueprint for cultivating regional agencies focused on youth empowerment.
"This initiative is essential as, to this day, no dedicated Oceania youth agency has been founded. Such agencies could play a pivotal role in tackling the multitude of challenges faced by the Pacific."
Mervyn expressed gratitude to his family, mentors, and friends, for their support.

The Fijian Dream for a Farmer
Hello, I’m Balbir Singh, the Director and Founder of Futuristic Farms in Tavua. I’m honored to have recently been awarded Youth Entrepreneur of the Year at the FDB’s National SME Awards 2023.
I want to express my gratitude to the Fijian government, the Fiji Development Bank, my clients, TikTok followers, and everyone who believed in me.
While many in my position might highlight only the glittering aspects of success, I want to share the reality of my journey:
**The Truths**
1. I am dyslexic and struggled with nearly failing every exam from grades 1 to 8.
2. I grew up in poverty, and there were times when I didn’t even have shoes.
3. At the University of the South Pacific, some classmates distanced themselves from me because I lacked modern appeal. My only appeal was my hard work, which earned me a Gold Medal for Academic Achievements.
4. Some teachers predicted that I would fail in life, but I’ve forgiven them.
5. I battled depression, which led me to quit writing at just 25.
6. I experienced hunger and tears, but I never gave up.
**The Business Side**
1. I founded Futuristic Farms after completing an Honors Master’s in Tourism Management, only to struggle finding the right job. Despite feeling disheartened, I pursued my dream of becoming a farmer.
2. I started my business with just $1,000.
3. During the first year, I lost $45,000 worth of sandalwood seedlings, nearly driving me to bankruptcy.
4. After working tirelessly, my firm is now one of the leading suppliers of various seedlings.
5. I provide jobs for young people and support local communities.
6. My business isn’t just about me; it’s about empowering farmers.
**My Dream for Farmers**
1. I want young people to take farming seriously.
2. Farming has helped me acquire my dream house and swimming pool.
3. I bought a Hilux from Asco Fiji for my firm.
4. I hope young people will aspire to luxury lives through farming.
5. I want youths to see farming as a viable source of income.
6. For example, planting 1,000 chili plants can yield up to $10,000.
**The Bottom Line**
I wasn’t a top student. I struggled academically and wasn’t seen as “cool.” I was like a fish asked to climb a tree. I failed that test, but in the test of life, I’m here as a self-made businessperson and Youth Entrepreneur of the Year. Despite rejections, depression, and challenges, I’ve succeeded because I didn’t give up.
To every young person in this country: focus on your dreams. The Fijian Dream is alive and well. You don’t have to leave Fiji to find success; you can stay and become a millionaire right

NYCF Youths Empowered through Voter Education Workshop in Suva.
In an inspiring display of civic engagement, the National Youth Council of Fiji (NYCF) recently participated in a Youth Empowerment Voter Education Workshop in Suva, hosted by the Fiji Elections Office. This initiative aimed to equip young individuals with the knowledge and tools necessary to actively participate in democratic processes.
The workshop brought together youths from various backgrounds, fostering a collaborative environment where they could engage with experts and learn about the intricacies of the voting process. Participants delved into topics such as voter registration, understanding electoral systems, and the importance of informed voting.
One of the highlights of the workshop was the interactive sessions led by experienced election officials, who provided valuable insights into the workings of the electoral system in Fiji. Attendees had the opportunity to ask questions, discuss their concerns, and gain a deeper understanding of how their votes can impact their communities and the nation.
The event also featured practical exercises that helped the youths practice how to evaluate candidates and policies critically. By the end of the workshop, the participants felt more confident in their ability to make informed decisions and contribute meaningfully to the democratic process.
This workshop underscores the importance of early education in civic responsibility and aims to empower the next generation of voters with the skills and knowledge necessary to be active participants in their democracies. The NYCF is committed to continuing such initiatives, fostering a culture of informed and engaged young citizens.
Overall, the workshop in Suva was a significant step towards bridging the gap between youth and the electoral process, setting a positive example for future civic education endeavors.
All the best to the Young People of Bua Province!!

Over the weekend, the National Youth Council of Fiji, represented by its Vice President Vonn Abbie and the Provincial Youth Member of Serua Province, Ratu Tevita Latianara, presented the NYCF Matanigasau to Roko Sela Seru, the Tui Bua, for the Yasana o Bua. Despite efforts by the National Executive Committee (NEC), NYC faced challenges in organizing itself due to limited time for fundraising and mobilizing its members.
Consequently, they have postponed their Conference and AGM to later in the year. During the presentation of the Matanigasau, the duo expressed apologies and sought forgiveness on behalf of the Youth Council. In accepting the gesture, Tui Bua reaffirmed Bua's open invitation for the Youth Council to visit anytime, expressing disappointment at not meeting youths from across Fiji as anticipated. The duo return today.
The National Youth Council of Fiji's NEC and its youth members addressed key issues and needs, conducted a SWOT analysis, and developed a Venn diagram in preparation for their official NEC meeting last week on Friday 6, 2024. The workshop was facilitated by the NYCF Youth Advisor and funded for two days by the Balance of Power (BOP). It was inspiring to witness the enthusiasm of the youth organization in advancing its efforts to benefit young people across the country.
Saturday's meeting aims to finalize preparations for its Annual AGM and Conference scheduled in Bua on August 12, 2024.
