Pacific peoples and their identities are linked to the land, the ocean and the environment. Upholding the right to a clean, healthy, and sustainable environment across the Pacific nations can strengthen people-centered development.
Yesterday, at the margins of the Pacific Islands Forum Leaders meeting, the Government of Tonga – Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources (MLNR) and Ministry of Meteorology, Energy, Information, Disaster Management, Environment, Climate Change and Communications (MEIDECC), United Nations ESCAP Pacific Office (ESCAP), UN Environment Programme in Asia Pacific (UNEP), UN Human Rights Pacific (OHCHR) and IUCN Oceania successfully co-organised a side-event which focussed on environmental law.
The event promoted a space for constructive dialogue to exchange perspectives and insights into opportunities to advance environmental rights and environmental rule of law in the Pacific, in support of the Pacific development agenda.

There is strong backing and support from key Fiji Ministries for the BIODEV2030 Phase 2 project that is being implemented by IUCN Oceania in Fiji.
The Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Fisheries and Forests, and the Ministry of ITaukei Affairs are all on board, supporting IUCN's efforts to align development with biodiversity in line with the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework.
Funded by AFD - Agence Française de Développement, this project is set to transform production practices, paving the way for a sustainable future.
In a recent meeting, IUCN engaged with senior representatives from these ministries, including the Deputy Secretary and Senior Forestry Officer, as well as key figures from the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of ITaukei Affairs. The discussions centered on the successes of Phase 1 and the exciting plans for Phase 2.
IUCN Oceania, through the BIODEV2030 project, looks forward to working closely with the relevant Government Ministries on this very crucial initiative.

IUCN Oceania hosted a briefing for the Oceania Fiji-based Missions earlier today in Suva, Fiji.
With the presence of Oceania High Commissioners and Ambassadors, the briefing provided a platform to share IUCN's work in the region while increasing awareness of the organisation's value proposition.
Not only did it provide an opportunity to strengthen partnerships and engagement with the Oceania governments but also it was an occasion to forge new partnerships to advance IUCN and its Members’ Agenda for Conservation in the region.
