Briteacher
Hi, I'm Mat. I give one-to-one English classes online and group classes on-site in Nantes!
Idiom of the week! 👊
Every day people use idioms, so as an English learner, it is important to start using them as soon as possible.
Here is one to get you started. 👇
'To knuckle down' can be used in any situation where you want to start working seriously. Whether it is writing an article, gardening or learning English. 😉
What are you doing now that you would like to work harder on?
Let me know in the comments!👇
🥳 THE BIG NEWS IS HERE! 🥳
You might have already noticed the change. Yup, that's right, this page is now Briteacher. WooHoo! 😁
This page along with my new Instagram page, yes you guessed it, also called Briteacher, is a place where I will share British slang, vocabulary, and expressions all in the name of helping you improve your English. 🙂
So, if you haven't done so already, head over to Instagram, type in 'Briteacher' and hit the follow button. The more the merrier, right?
That's it for now, thanks a bunch! 👋

Happy New Year to you all!🥳
It has been a long time since I posted here, but with the new year already here it is time to get back into it. 💪
Last year ended up being very busy, with an eight-week training program to boost my teaching skills and bring new ideas to my classes, along with work, life, and the holidays this page lost some of my attention. BUT, there are some changes coming! Eek!😁 STAY TUNED!!
I wish all of you lovely people a great week back in work, school, or whatever else you have going on this year!
Hello, how are you? 👋
Ok, so we all know this is the basic greeting 'Hello, how are you?', and there's nothing wrong with this, you can really use it anytime with anyone. Yay! 😊
But, there are so many more greetings that we can use.
👋 Hey, how's it going?
👋 Hi, how's things?
👋 Alright mate, how's it going?
👋 What's up buddy?
And the best part about it is, you can mix different parts of these greetings to make more. Like, 'What's up mate?' or 'how's it going buddy?' because 'mate/buddy' mean friend, and also, we don't usually say 'friend' to a friend, it is just too formal. 🙄
And general answers could be anything like:
👍 Fine, thanks.
👍Yeah, not too bad.
👍All good, you?
Alrighty then, let me know below if you can think of anymore, or even better, mix some of these to make a new greeting. 👇
Have a good one! 👋
4 ways to use the word 'get':
✔ Morning, can I get a large coffee, please? ☕
✔ I don't get it!🤔
✔ I just got my parcel delivered. 📦
✔ I'm going to get a new phone tonight. 📱
You've probably heard and seen 'get' used everywhere in everyday English, and for good reason too. Using the alternatives is just too formal in day-to-day life. We just don't get it!
And you won't believe it, but there are more than just 4!😮
So, what are they? Leave your answers in the comments below. 👇
🤯Feeling like there's too much going on in life and you just want to say no?
❌Of course, you can just say 'no, thanks'. But try these instead, it's much more fun.
👍Tip - using a variety of sentences to say the same thing will help you feel more confident and sound more fluent.
After a wonderful summer holiday road trip full of sightseeing🧐, driving🚐, hiking⛰, climbing🧗♂️, and eating😋 of course, it is now time to get back to the grindstone. I hope you are feeling fresh off the press and ready to start work/school/study again. What did you get up to during the summer? I'd love to know! 🙂
Back to the grindstone - back to work
Fresh off the press - ready to go and do something
What did you get up to? - What did you do?
'I live' or 'I stay'? 🤔
"I'm living in France now" permanently.
"I'm staying at a friend's house" temporarily.
Are you using ‘live’ and ‘stay’ correctly? Here’s a quick tip from Beth! Now, complete the sentence: 😀🤔
They’re ______ in a hotel for a couple of nights. They’ll be home on Tuesday.
1. living
2. staying
Yup! Don't expect an end because you will never get there. Just concentrate on what is most relevant and important to you now.
Hello wonderful followers! 🙂
In September, I have a couple of spaces opening up for private English lessons. If you need help after school or would just like to practice English conversation in a relaxed manner, then don't hesitate to send me a message. They can be online (like most of my students) or at my place in Saint Donatien. Have a great weekend! 🌞
Are you tired of using the word ‘tired’? Then, check out these 5 handy alternatives and energise your vocabulary!
(Note: these are not exactly the same - you might need to adapt your grammar to use them correctly.)
Spring has arrived and so have some lovely new idioms!
What great advice! 👌
Listening can be one of the most challenging skills to master when learning English – but with a little patience and dedication you’ll soon start to see an improvement! 🎧
What are your tips for improving listening?
Are you STRESSED? 😛
Stress is an important part of pronunciation.
Help your learners practise correct word stress with this table.
Which words do your students have difficulty with?
Did you know that some nouns only exist in plural form?
👖 They include the names of tools, instruments and articles of clothing which normally have two parts.
👖 They are uncountable so cannot be used with numbers, e.g. two trousers. ❌
👖 But we often make them countable using the word ‘pair’, e.g. a pair of trousers. ✅
👖 They are always used with a plural verb, e.g. These are my trousers. ✅
I travel to work by bike! What about you?
How do you travel to work or school? 🚗🚝🚴♂️🦶
e.g. I travel to work on foot.
I just love the word "flummoxed". It is still used today, but should definitely be used more in my opinion!
Why words with two opposite meanings survive in English The reasons involve coincidence, language drift and simple confusion
I love these phrases! Try to use them as soon as you can and see how fluent you sound and the replies you get. 🙂
He is 81 years old already?! Waw. That's impressive!
Do you have a tendency to do something? Good, bad, or ugly?
Prepositions of time!
IN/ON/AT?
Generally, 'in' shows the largest time and place, 'at' shows the smallest time and place, and 'on' shows dates and days.
Note: do not use them before 'next' or 'last'.
Let's take a look! 🙂

Let's start the week off with a quick English tip. A student recently asked me the difference between 'everyone' and 'everybody' and when was best to use it. So here it is. Have a great day! 🙂
Fast fashion! 👕👔👗🥾👡
The topic of this week's classes. We will be discussing all things fast fashion.
What is fast fashion?
Does it matter if it's cheap?
Fast fashion facts:
- 80 billion garments are made each year
- 400% more than 20 years ago
- On average, garments are only worn 10 times before being thrown away
- Can take up to 200 years to decompose
This article from Pebblemag really put things into perspective for me.
What's your opinion? Do you think it is such a big deal? Let me know in the comments. 🙂

Phrasal verbs are an essential part of advanced everyday English! Phrasal verbs ALWAYS have one verb as part of the phrase, the other words in the phrase could be a variety of words, like prepositions for example. They usually consist of 2 or 3 words that have a different meaning when they are together.🙂
