Study for Crouching N**e, 1952

The Detroit Institute of Arts, acquired from Mr William R. Valentiner, Detroit, by gift 1955.

In this work, the crouching figure is held in the partial circle drawn by the rail.

“Study for Crouching N**e was the prototype for all the crouching figures Bacon painted in the 1950s. It was presented to Detroit Institute of Arts in 1955, and subsequently he referred to it as the ‘Detroit picture’.”
