Well that's a wrap for this term.

Some amazing drum results just came through from Rockschool so well done everyone for the hard work you all put in.

This term there was ten Distinctions with three of those at Grade 5 level, a Merit at Grade 2, and a Merit at Debut grade.

Hope you all enjoy the summer break and I look forward to seeing you all in August.

Another day teaching drums at McBain Music school. I’ve had a wide range of students in today from compete beginners to Grade 6 level. A couple of my grade 6 students are learning to play Ziggy Stardust which has great 16th note triplet fills in it. Some great exercises for 16th note triplets are the paradiddle didde, which is RLRRLL, and the 6 note roll, which is RLLRRL, with an accent on the first and last beat.

At McBain Music School we can help any student from learning their first drum beat to achieving a level 6 diploma and beyond.

Christmas Rockschool Distinctions! Two of my drum students smashed their Rockschool Grade 1 Exam with both of them achieving a distinction this week. We recorded two really good takes which were swiftly sent off to Rockschool to be graded. Congratulations to you both from McBain Music School.

Made an executive decision today to leave grinch at home and put up Christmas decorations in the school. Merry Christmas John, Paul, George, and Ringo.

A couple of drum kits I’ve had over the years that were a step up for me. The first was this beautiful Pearl BLX kit in birch wood purchased from R and B music when they were located in Rosemount. I Recorded a lot of demos with that kit along with the matching piccolo snare. This kit was sold to finance the dream kit!
This was the Yamaha Recording Custom purchased from Mike who had a shop on Hutcheon Street which used to be an old railway signal box. I surprise I never got sacked from my job at the time as I would always go and skive there. Being a huge Dave Weckl fan it had to be in cherry red with the matching brass piccolo snare.
As well as a step up in kits I managed to move out of a chicken shed I used to rent from a farmer to a soundproofed garage. I won’t go into too much detail about some of the places I’ve rented over the years just so I could practice.

Feel so privileged to play these beautiful drums everyday. Look and sound amazing. Thank you Tama for making such an amazing instrument.

This practise pad has been with me on my drum journey since 1988. I believe that’s when they were first released. It’s seen better days but it still serves me well and functions as it should so I intend to keep using it another 34 years. It brings back happy memories to times I used to travel down to London each week to get lessons at Drum Tech. I would get the morning train from Aberdeen, get to London, have my lesson, then get the last train back to start work in the morning. My boss at the time wasn’t amused as I don’t think the train ever arrived back on time. To all you drummers out there what drum gear do you still own and use that’s served you well over many years?
