Over on our Twitter/X page, students, staff and alumni are sharing what Kafka means to them. We're not sure this can be topped though... https://x.com/HerrGalloway/status/1797688525397414046
Today marks exactly one hundred years since the untimely death from tuberculosis of the Prague-born German-language writer Franz Kafka, aged just 40. People around the world are commemorating 100 years of Kafka's legacy today and throughout this year: https://rb.gy/597un4 . You can currently find a raft of Kafka programmes on German and Austrian broadcasters (see, for example: https://oe1.orf.at/kafka ). Few writers have had such an enduring influence on world literature and popular culture.
The German Filmklub is also paying tribute to Kafka and his legacy by inviting you to watch a recording of a dance-theatre adaptation of the writer's most famous work – Die Verwandlung [The Metamorphosis, 1915].
WATCH The Metamorphosis, adapted from Kafka's novella (choreography: Arthur Pita | music: Frank Moon | Royal Ballet 2013 | Runtime: circa 90 mins) via Learning on Screen https://rb.gy/c5idkz (UoA sign-in) or via YouTube
SHARE your responses (ideally within the next 7-10 days) to what you've seen via this padlet https://tinyurl.com/39jadj3x by clicking the add (+) sign. In tribute to Kafka's lived multilingualism, you can leave your message in English, German or any other language.
If you would like to (re)read Die Verwandlung, you can do so via the library or Project Gutenberg.
The German Filmklub will program a further Kafka-inspired film in the coming academic year - watch this space! For now, hopefully this provides a timely opportunity to reflect on Kafka's work and legacy.

Our very own Dr Katya Krylova gave a lecture earlier today as part of the Ringvorlesung 'Kanonische Literaturverfilmungen' [lecture series: canonical film adaptations], held at the Faculty of Arts and Humanities, University of Salzburg, and open to students, staff and members of the public. Dr Krylova spoke about Terrence Malick's 'A Hidden Life' and its transnational depiction of the Austrian conscientious objector Franz Jägerstätter (1907-1943).

This morning, our very own Dr Lauren Cuthbert (affiliated early career researcher and frischgebackene PhD from German Studies at the University of Aberdeen!) and Dr Katya Krylova (Senior Lecturer) presented their research at the ‘Entrenched Narratives, Hidden Figures: Reappraising Representations of War Across German Screen Media’ conference, held over the past two days at German Studies at Warwick, School of Modern Languages and Cultures. Dr Cuthbert’s paper, arising out of her doctoral research on the representation of the Vietnam War in the films of Heynowski and Scheumann, was presented in the ‘Documentary Remediations’ panel, while Dr Krylova’s paper, arising out of her project on ‘Evolving Austrian Memory Culture in Literature and Film' was presented in the ‘Austrian Wartime Experiences’ panel. Many congratulations to the organisers, Molly Harrabin (German Studies at Warwick, School of Modern Languages and Cultures.) and Lawrence Alexander (University of Oxford) on organising this enriching and thought-provoking conference!
Herzlichen Dank to all who joined us yesterday for the last Filmklub screening of term. It was a joy to watch Petzold's 'Undine' and to participate in a rich discussion about the fairytale elements of the film and its representation of Berlin, hosted by Dr Tara Beaney. The Filmklub will be back at the start of next academic year - keep an eye on this page for updates! In the meantime, a big thank you to our Filmklub fans for your support of the Filmklub during this past year!
Herzlichen Dank to everyone who came to the German Filmklub screening of 'Rebellinnen' yesterday. We greatly enjoyed watching Pamela Meyer-Arndt's documentary about East German women artists, just ahead of International Women's Day. Many thanks to our DAAD-Lektorin Julia Röder for hosting the screening and discussion. Join us next time, on Tuesday 19th March (5pm in MR051), when we'll view 'Undine', a fairytale set in modern-day Berlin, directed by Germany's leading auteur filmmaker Christian Petzold. The screening will be led by Dr Tara Beaney, who is convening an honours course this semester on 'Fairytales and Feminism'.
