This time last year we didn’t have a single booking, 2nd year in and July is fully booked, August filling up too. During that time we’ve invested in new TV’s, Beds, Mattresses, Furniture, all laundry items and countless smaller items to make our guests stay as comfortable and pleasant as possible.
During the coming year we will continue to improve furnishings. Our guests matter, so we will continue to do our utmost to ensure that each and every person has a great stay and enjoys being in Barmouth as much as we do.
A big thank you to all of our 1st year guests 👏👍
Our latest review from a family on an Easter break, thank you for the 5* rating! 👌👍
Fantastic and well equipped house. Brilliant location - a few minutes walk to beach and shops and cafes on doorstep. Great info about local area and welcome instructions so easy to follow. Although no parking outside property loading was easy and we left the car a two minute walk with the parking passes provided. We ant wait to come back.
Another 5* review, again Airbnb in February, really appreciated 👍🙂
A real home from home, comfortable, clean...and special little touches that show how much it means to Sharon you enjoy your stay. That to me is real customer service where you are put first. Thank you Sharon for sharing your lovely home with us in an amazing setting in a pretty town called Barmouth, North Wales.
It’s been a while since I’ve posted a review from one of our guests, this one on Airbnb back in February. Thank you to the guests for the following 5* review.
This house is perfect for a family visit! It had all the amenities you could want, with ensuite bathrooms for most bedrooms, a large living room with games and movies, fully stocked kitchen to serve at least 8 people and located in the heart of town. We made full use of the kitchen and cooked big family meals which we enjoyed around the large table.
We enjoyed regular walks on the beach and caught some beautiful sunsets from the dunes and Barmouth bridge. We took a hike to "The Peak", ate at the Tilman and finished off our day with pints at The Last Inn! All without starting our car.
On another day we drove to Coed y Brenin and checked out the mountain bike trails followed by a country drive back to the coastline with a few quick stops to see Caernarfon and Harlech Castle.
Sharon and Steve were great, they responded quickly to our emails, helped us through the booking process and sent out lots of helpful information before our trip.
I would highly recommend their home.
A few photos from our early evening walk a few days ago.
What is there not to love ...
Well worth a trip, must do this again in 2018, great fun.
The History of Wales
16th March
On 16th March 1647 - Harlech Castle, the last Royalist stronghold of the English Civil War, surrendered to Parliament's forces after a 10 month siege.
Harlech Castle rests upon part of the Harlech Dome, a spur of rock almost 200 ft high, from which the land falls away sharply on the north and west, and a ditch cut into the rock protects the remaining approaches to the castle, it has been described as one of the finest examples of late 13th century and early 14th century military architecture in Europe.
In mythology, the site of Harlech Castle is associated with the legend of Branwen, a Welsh princess written of in the Mabinogian, this would refer to the Bedd Branwen Period of the early Bronze Age in Britain, covering the period between 1650 BC and 1400 BC.
It is thought that the site of Harlech Castle was later a Llys (Welsh royal court) which later became a castle of Prince Llywelyn ap Gruffydd, what is known is that after the Norman invasion of Wales at around 1070, the kings of England and the Princes of Wales vied for control of North Wales and after the death of Llywelyn ap Grufydd in 1282, King Edward I of England wanted to fortify the newly conquered area.
1282 After Edward I's successful campaign in North Wales, he ordered the construction of a castle at Harlech
1289 Harlech Castle completed
1294 Harlech Castle besieged by Madog ap Llywelyn during a Welsh uprising, but the castle held out
1404 The castle was taken by Owain Glyndwr and became his residence and military headquarters for four years
1405 Owain Glyndwr held his second parliament at Harlech Castle
1408 English forces under the command of the future Henry V placed Harlech Castle under siege.
1409 Harlech Castle fell to the English.
1460 During the Wars of The Roses, Queen Margaret of Anjou fled to the castle and it was held by her Lancastrian supporters and became a base for their operations across the region.
1468 Harlech Castle taken by the Yorkists after a month's siege, which is credited with inspiring the song Men of Harlech.
1644 Prince Rupert appointed a local Royalist, Colonel William Owen, as the castle's constable, and Owen was entrusted with repairing the fortifications.
1647 The castle was surrendered to Parliamentary forces after a 10 month siege and was the last royal fortress to surrender in the war. The castle was no longer required for the security of North Wales and Parliament ordered it's slighting to make the castle unusable, however the orders were only partially carried out and thankfully it was not totally demolished.

Gotta love Barmouth ❤️
Barmouth, perched on the mouth of the beautiful Mawddach Estuary, is southern Snowdonia’s most popular seaside resort. In summer, its big sandy beach is a magnet for visitors, yet there’s so much space along miles of unbroken sands that it never gets overcrowded.
Aren’t these old images just fab!

Slate Quarry Dinorwic 1962
The first commercial attempts at slate mining took place in 1787, when a private partnership obtained a lease from the landowner, Assheton Smith. Although this met with moderate success, the outbreak of war with France, taxes and transportation costs limited the development of the quarry. A new business partnership led by Assheton Smith was formed on the expiry of the lease in 1809 and the business boomed after the construction of a horse-drawn tramway to Port Dinorwic in 1824. At its peak in the late 19th century, "when it was producing an annual outcome of 100,000 tonnes", Dinorwic employed more than 3,000 men and was the second largest opencast slate producer in the country. Although by 1930 its working employment had dropped to 2,000, it continued in production until 1969.
The quarries are now used as an adventure rock climbing and scuba diving venue. The Blue Peris Mountain Centre, operated by Bedford Borough Council and Central Bedfordshire Council, conducts various outdoor activities at the quarries.
The Vivian Quarry section has both climbing and diving sections. The diving experience has normally good visibility, with depths ranging from 6 metres (20 ft) to 18 metres (59 ft), a platform at 6 metres (20 ft), plus flooded buildings, boats, a van and a gnome garden.
Part of the film Willow was shot in the disused Dinorwic Quarry, in June 1987 on some of the lower terraces next to the Pumped storage scheme. Scenes from Street Fighter were filmed on the south side of "Watford Gap" near the Matilda hole. The Harriet hole is the site for one of the sets of the film Clash of the Titans.
