***Stags blow WINDsor to pieces***
Barry Athletic travelled to Penarth yesterday to take on local friends Windsor BC in a Welsh Cup (Carruthers Shield) play-off to determine who progressed through to the knockout draw.
The Stags were caught out in the first 5 ends by the surprisingly slick surface to trail by around 8 shots overall. However, this was as good as it got the Windsor boys as the Ath soon shifted through the gears to be up by 30 shots at the 10 end mark.
Barry continue to assert their dominance as they doubled their advantage to approx 60 shots by the 16 end mark that led the Windsor captain to throw in the towel and ask that the game finished at 18 ends.
As such, Barry Ath recorded a 4 rink success and an impressive victory with a few players missing. Top rink honours went to Philip Killin, Tim Morgan, Chris Wright & the very impressive Nigel Leigh with a 29-10 success.
Rink Scores:
Martin Clarke-Squires 22-10
Dean Rees 25-10
Glyn Thomas 26-11
Nigel Leigh 29-10
Barry Athletic 102-41 Penarth Windsor
Barry Athletic Bowls Club will find out their opponents in the next stage at 4pm today as the draw takes place live on Facebook on the Welsh Bowlers Chat page. Weโre in the ๐ฉ!
The Stags Second Team were also in action yesterday as they hosted the ever strong Whitchurch second team on Barry Island. The game proved to be a tight affair throughout but the Cardiff outfit always held the advantage and managed to see it out despite all 4 Stag rinks being in contention.
The Stags eventually went down by 8 shots overall but didnโt manage to record one winning rink as Zak Gray, Michael Edwards, Terry Collins & Neil Jewess grinded out a hard fought win.
The Stags only have 1 game this coming weekend but it is always one that gets the juices flowing as we host our local rivals Dinas Powis Bowling Club.
Come on the Stags! ๐ซ๐ซ๐ซ
***Stags ROMp to Double Success***
Saturday 20 May seen Barry Ath take on local rivals Barry Romilly Bowling Club in a double header.
โThe Romโ have gone from strength to strength over the last few years since becoming a private club and went into these fixtures as favourites.
The First Teams faced off on the Island in a competitive friendly whilst The Second Teams met at Romilly Park for a EWPG Division 5 clash.
At the Island, it was the away team who raced out of the blocks to lead by 12 shots after 5 ends across the board. However this advantage soon waivered as an Athletic Team, missing 3 of their top players, found strength in depth to record a 13 shot victory overall. The rink of Phil Killin, Jack Killin, Peter Rogers & Nigel Leigh top scored with a 27-18 success over the strong Romilly Quartet skipped by Jeff Wright.
Rink Scores (Barry Athletic Skips First):
David Wright 19-19 Brian Foscolo
Nigel Leigh 27-18 Jeff Wright
Carl Best 21-22 Clive Collins
Chris Wright 22-17 Graham Cogbill
Barry Athletic 89-76 Barry Romilly
Meanwhile at The Rom it was much more of a tighter battle with more at stake as both teams looked to bounce back from losing their opening fixtures. The game was played in a fantastic spirit on a slick surface. The lead swapped hands on many occasions before The Stags managed to assert control on the last few ends to run out winners by 8 shots overall, picking up 10 points in the process.
Rink Scores (Barry Ath Skips Only)
Albert Mintern Lost 17-10
Tim Morgan Won 13-21
Geoff Whittaker Won 20-29
Neil Jewess Lost 25-23
Barry Romilly (4) 75-83 (10) Barry Athletic
A great weekend all round for the Stag Male Bowlers as both teams managed to welcome new players into their set ups with considerable sucess and good results to boot.
Attention now switches to this coming weekend and another difficult double header. The Second Team will be looking to follow up Saturdays impressive performance as they host Whitchurch whilst the First Team will be looking to seal their passage through to the first knockout round of the Carruthers shield when they visit Penarth Windsor
Good luck to both teams! ๐

***Those Dam Dinas Busters ๐ฃ ๐ฆ***
With the weather improving in turn meaning the greens are improving, this has provided an upturn in Barry Ath players form.
The week started off with our Ladies Team securing a comfortable double rink 29 shot victory away at The Murch, Dinas Powis. The rink of Kay Adams,Ceri Louise Allsup, Nicola Clarke-Squires & Angela Gray top-scored with a 22 shot rink win - the other successful rink was skipped by one of the original golden girls, June Best.
The following day, BABC were very fortunate to host the second edition of The Barry DAMBUSTERS Trophy. This competition, set up in 2022, is played amongst the Barry clubs to commemorate the Dambusters raid of 1943.
Barry Ath, as host club, were allowed to supply two teams to ensure that a gap was plugged in this round robin comp. Ironically it was the Barry โA Teamโ that proved the better out of the two teams. A final round robin match victory, coupled with a shock Barry Romilly defeat, set up a winner takes-all final against Cadoxton Bowls Club, who had defied a Dambusters miracle themselves as they reached the final with a minus shot difference! ๐ ๐ฎ
Barryโs โA-Teamโ were not in the mood for pitying any fools though as Skips Neil Jewess & Scotty Howell played some bombs ๐ฃ themselves to secure a comfortable 2 rink victory and ensure Barry Athletic Bowls Club secured the 2023 Dambusters Trophy ๐
*Wednesday Night* saw our Midweek Team start off their Munro Cup campaign with a visit to their biggest rivals, Dinas Powis Bowling Club
The Ath struggled to get to grips with the heavier green at first and was behind for all of the game. However, a fantastic last few ends across the green including a last end pick up of 3 shots by captain Scotty Howell secured an unlikely 1 shot victory and 10 points in the process. This victory seemed quite poetic as a year to the day Barry had lost by 1 shotโฆโฆโฆ..to Dinas!
Top rink honours for ๐ฆ went to Chris Marriott, Shaun Gray, Neil Jewess & Chris Wright who had an early season โGIFTโ ๐ by defeating the unpredictable Richard Janes by 6 shots.
Rink Scores (Dinas Skips First):
Gareth Griffiths 13-15 Scott Howell
Matt Gershenson 21-15 Dean Rees
Chris Daw 17-16 Russ Harris
Richard Janes 12-18 Chris Wright
Dinas (4) 63-64 (10) Barry Athletic
A mixed weekend for Barry Athletic BC this weekend.
The first team produced a battling performance to edge a tightly contested affair at Caerau Welfare in the Carruthers Shield - eventually winning by 8 shots. This win, coupled with last weeks home victory over Millwood means Barry progress to the County Play-off on 27th May where they will face Llantwit Major or Penarth Windsor away.
The Second Team found the Merthyr West End Wildcats too hard to contain at the 4Wood Green. Sadly the inexperienced Athletic team just couldnโt lay a paw on the Wildcats and ended up succumbing to a loss on all rinks.
It is hoped that with more players returning over the next few weeks it will see an upturn in fortune for both sidesโฆ..up the stags! ๐ฆ
Thanks to Ian Staff Davies & Merthyr West End Bowls Club for the photos ๐ธ
