THOUSANDS OF FREE TREES UP FOR GRABS!

Residents can get two free trees to plant in their gardens this autumn to encourage native plants and wildlife and capture carbon as The Tree-Mendous Giveaway launches in Basingstoke and Deane.
People can apply for up to two free trees until Sunday 10 November, or when stocks run out, under the new initiative by Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council and The Hampshire Forest Partnership that aims to see new trees spring up in more than 1,800 gardens across the borough.
The 11 varieties up for grabs are spindle, guelder rose, wayfaring, blackthorn, hazel, elder, hawthorn, crab apple, field maple, bird cherry and rowan trees. Selected because of their suitability for local soil and weather conditions, these varieties of trees will also help to provide shelter and food for native wildlife in people’s gardens in support of the council’s recently adopted biodiversity strategy.
The trees are young, around 20cm to 40cm tall, and people can choose two of the same or two different varieties to plant in their gardens. They will be available for booked collections on Wednesday 16 October or Saturday 30 November at the council’s depot on Wade Road in Basingstoke.
Information will be provided with each of the trees when they are collected, including where in the garden they should be planted and how they should be cared for.
Cabinet Member for the Climate and Ecological Emergency Cllr Chris Tomblin said: “Every tree people plant in their gardens as part of our ‘Tree-Mendous Giveaway’ will nurture plants and wildlife to support nature recovery while also absorbing pollution and capturing carbon to help tackle the climate emergency.
“And trees have also been proven to be positive for people’s mental health and wellbeing too, with just being around them being calming and helping to reduce stress levels.
“With limited numbers of trees available, anyone who’s interested should apply as soon as possible. And if you want to get more top tips for what else you can do in your garden to encourage nature, then I’d encourage you to book yourself in for a free garden survey with the eco experts in our Green Team too.”
With the unanimous backing of its councillors, the borough council declared a climate emergency for the borough in 2019 and an ecological emergency in 2021.
The free trees for people’s gardens are being provided by The Hampshire Forest Partnership, which was set up in 2022 and aims to see one million trees planted across the county as part of an ambitious programme of work by Hampshire County Council to tackle the climate emergency.
People can find out more about the free trees on offer, including which varieties are likely to be best suited to their garden, and apply at

The Parish Council would like to thank the management team at Barton's Mill pub for working to improve the traffic flow issues which occurred in their local area on Wednesday evening. As their post this morning confirms, measures have been put in place to hopefully avoid a similar issue on Sunday evening.

Thanks also to our Borough Councillor Kate Tuck, and to the team at Basing House, for their support.

📢 An Update 📢

We want to address the parking problems that occurred during the last England games and assure you that we are taking steps to prevent any inconvenience to our neighbours.

With the support and guidance of the Borough and Parish Council, we have agreed a solution whereby we will be providing ten, professional, trained parking marshals to ensure only one side of Bartons Lane is used for parking.

In addition to our car park and overflow car park, our friends at Basing House have kindly allowed us to utilise their car park again, and we will have SIA door staff on hand for everyone's safety.

We apologise to those affected by the parking situation and ask all customers to cooperate with us to ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience for everyone on Sunday.

Our goal has always been to be a valuable asset in the community, and we appreciate the loyalty and support we receive from all of you.

Thank you for your understanding and support!

Transport for the South East wants YOUR views about future transport needs

Transport for the South East (TfSE), the Sub-national Transport Body for the south east of England, is asking people to take part in their ‘Your Voices’ survey and submit views on the future transport needs of the region.
People are being asked to take part in the online survey where there are questions about transport-related issues such as accessibility and affordability.
Participants can also share their experiences regarding congestion, noise pollution, air quality, road safety, public transport, personal safety, and walking and cycling routes.

The ‘Your Voices’ survey can be found online at tfse.org.uk until Sunday, 2 June 2024.

A special podcast has been produced that explains in further detail why TfSE needs the views of people across the south east and how those views will help shape the future work of TfSE. The podcast can be listened to online at tfse.org.uk and is also available on Apple Podcasts and Spotify by searching for ‘The TfSE Podcast.’
Councillor Keith Glazier, Chair of TfSE, said: “We want to hear the views and experiences of those in the region when it comes to all things transport related. One of our roles is to speak to government about the priorities they should consider when improving transport connectivity locally. To do this effectively, we need to hear from as many people as possible across the south east.”
The south east is defined as Bracknell Forest, Reading, Windsor & Maidenhead, Slough, West Berkshire, Wokingham, Kent, Medway, Hampshire, Portsmouth, Southampton, Isle of Wight, Surrey, East Sussex, West Sussex, and Brighton & Hove.

Another half term.. another completely unnecessary act of vandalism.

We have the entire event recorded on CCTV and the vandals are known and are from the local community. Please, if you are trusting your children enough to let them 'hang out' in the village on their own, could you remind them of the importance of respecting public facilities. Stupid behaviour causes damage which obviously costs money to rectify. Money which could have been spent in better ways, surely.

The public toilets will unfortunately now be closed for the foreseeable future whilst the damages are repaired.

Thank you for your patience.

Very frustratingly, the weather is still making the Recreation Ground too wet for football to be played, so sadly there will be no football this weekend again (Saturday 17th and Sunday 18th February 2024).

Old Basing & Lychpit Parish Council extends its warmest congratulations to Old Basing resident Katherine Antrobus, with the entire WaveBreakers team, on her unbelievable achievement - rowing across the Atlantic in 40 days is utterly staggering!

Very well done Katherine!!

💃🎊🎉***40 days, 10 hours and 51 minutes*** 🎉🎊💃

AND THE NEW FEMALE TRIO WORLD RECORD HOLDERS!!!!! 🏆

If you can even read this post through all of the tears that are undoubtedly streaming down your face; what we have just witnessed is quite simply mind blowing! 🤯🤯🤯

Three strangers, became three colleagues, and then became three of the closest friends, by rowing 3,000 miles across the Atlantic Ocean! 🚣‍♀️

Perhaps the most brilliant part, is they didn't just complete the row, or even just get a world record - they did it in such a way that inspired thousands of people that followed them. It's been SUCH a powerful expedition to follow. 🙌

The team have raised a PHENOMENAL £82,771 so far, all of which will be DOUBLED by the Vodafone Foundation - and there is still time to donate at https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/wavebreakers2023 - Your £100 donation is worth £200! And all for such a fantastic cause; the campaign which aims to protect those on the frontlines of the climate crisis by supporting WWF and UNHCR.

WHY CAN'T WE STOP CRYING!!!!! 😭🥹

If you are able to dig out the questionnaire which was delivered to you in early December, complete it and return it to us at the Parish Office (using the accompanying freepost envelope or delivered by hand to the office at the Recreation Ground), your views will very much help to shape the update of the Neighbourhood Plan.

Thank you.

Hampshire County Council is leading the preparation of the county’s Local Nature Recovery Strategy. They are working closely with Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council in its development and are encouraging our residents to take part in a survey asking where they would like to see improvements for nature recovery, what their views for nature priorities are and what action they may be taking to help nature in their area.
Gathering this information is an important first step in the development of a local nature recovery strategy which aims to ensure Hampshire’s natural environment is restored for today’s and future generations.

Completing the online survey should take only a few minutes and will provide valuable information: https://www.hampshireonline.hub.arcgis.com

If you would like to sign up for regular updates and newsletters on the Local Nature Recovery Strategy here: http://smc-lp.s4hana.ondemand.com/eu/p/cs5VB

What do you want to see improved for nature locally? Take part in Hampshire County Council's survey to shape how and where we put nature into recovery across Hampshire. Your voice matters! https://www.hants.gov.uk/landplanningandenvironment/nature-recovery-hampshire/get-involved

But that's not all! We're hosting workshops across Hampshire for the Local Nature Recovery Strategy, and we're inviting passionate individuals to join. If you want to share more opinions, be actively involved, and discuss your priorities for nature close to where you live, register interest for our workshops. Your participation will help us create a more inclusive and representative strategy, benefiting both people and nature. https://hiwwt.typeform.com/LNRS-HIWWT

Happy New Year to you all!

Having returned from the festive break, we just wanted to share some lovely photographs which were captured at our first Christmas at the Rec on 22nd December. Thanks to all those who came and participated - we hope you had a fun evening.

The Parish Council would like to extend its thanks one more time to those who helped to make it such a success (in our opinion!): the fabulous 'MC' Johnnie Hammond, our team of hard working Grounds Contractors, the amazing ladies at The Village Cafe Old Basing, and the very generous County Councillor Elaine Still.

We raised £729.69 in total for St Michael's Hospice (North Hampshire), so very many thanks to all who donated too.

Hampshire County Council's On-street Charging Facilities demand survey

Hampshire County Council would like you to tell them where you would like to see on-street charging facilities. They have installed some chargepoints across the county on their own sites. They are trialling public on-street chargepoints in Wi******er and Eastleigh.

They collect and use this data to help identify where demand is greatest. They are currently only collating information to inform our emerging EV Strategy. However, requests are being recorded for future installation, subject to technical feasibility and budget.
