Being both aware and active are essential in promoting and protecting insect biodiversity ๐
Vote with your wallet ๐ณ For example, consider buying direct from farmers and growers who go the extra mile to avoid the use of pesticides! ๐งก
Use your voice! ๐ฃ Whether it's speaking to family and friends about important topics, engaging with community projects, or getting in touch with your local MP and signing relevant petitions, your voice has more impact than you know ๐๐คฏ What's more, there are so many more ways to use it! ๐๐

๐จ Climate change is shifting the timing of emergence of pollinating insects from hibernation, decoupling them from that of their host plants ๐ฅ
This means that some plants are now coming into flower before any insects have emerged from hibernation, with dire consequences for both parties ... ๐๐ฅบ

๐ฏIf possible, try to reduce unnecessary light pollution in your garden to avoid disturbing courtship, foraging and navigation of these nocturnal insects ๐๐ชฐ๐ชฒ

Insects, such as ladybirds, can be an organic growers best friend! โฃ๏ธ
They are a natural ๐ฑalternative to pesticide use and can help us restore our natural habitats! ๐ฟ๐ณ๐ชด
Using natural and organic alternatives to pesticides represents a significant way we can all help stop & reverse biodiversity decline โ๏ธ
If you see any of the following in your garden, donโt squash them ๐ฃ as they are here to help ๐๐ฝ
๐ปHoverflies
๐ทladybirds
๐Parasitic wasps
๐ผbutterflies and wasps
๐ฅLacewing
๐ท๐ฆ๐ฆ๐๐ชฐand many more!!
Join us this week for the Buzzing for Bath 4-day challenge ๐๐
The 4-days will comprise of a number of insect related challenges, with prizes to be won!!!
Follow us for more information ๐๐๐๐
๐ฑNot only are pesticides detrimental to insect life๐๐, there are also concerns around the effects of them on human healthโ
Therefore, reducing pesticide use is beneficial to both insect and human health
Get ready for our final topic ... ready to learn how YOU can help protect and promote local biodiversity? ๐๐
Over the next few days we'll be talking about some of the things you can do on both a macro and micro level to help insects! ๐๐
P.S. Keep an eye out for our 4-Day Challenge, coming very soon ๐๐คซ
๐ง Insects help ecosystems thrive and can even act as water purifiers!
๐ก Did you know that dragonflies are known to be indicators of clean water? They really like fresh water so youโll almost always find them near a flowing river or high quality ponds!
๐จ Itโs important to remember that a decline in insects such a mayflies or dragonflies has a direct impact on ecosystem services, especially for water purification ๐ข
๐Where does the economic value of biological pest control come fromโ
๐Taking the relationship between ladybirds and aphids in cotton fields as an example
The economic value of ladybird ๐comes from 3๏ธโฃ main sources:
firstly, it reduces the use of pesticides for aphid control; ๐ฟ
secondly, it saves on the labour๐จ๐ปโ๐พ input of pesticide spraying;
and thirdly, it controls the loss of cotton yield due to aphids.๐พ
Without insects, we would be physically unable to feed the human population.
Food for thought ... ๐๐๐
Over the next few days we will be highlighting the effects of a continued decline in insect numbers!
Stay tuned to understand the importance of insects to our lives ๐๐๐
Ladybirds๐, mantis, hoverflies and ground beetles all work towards controlling the populations of insect pests๐ฆ
Social wasps eat 14 tonnes of insect pests every summer!๐๐ผ๐ฅณ
Gardeners ๐จ๐ปโ๐พ๐ฉ๐ปโ๐พ can order beneficial insect assassins in mass quantities and release them near their garden๐ฑ. Within a few weeks, the pest problem is resolved.๐ธ
Using insects to fight insects means thereโs no synthetic chemicals used and thereโs practically no human labor involved in dispersing these beneficial bugs.โบ๏ธ
Insects carry out a stinky but important job so we donโt have to ๐ฉ
They decompose things such as animal waste, giving us a natural helping hand in keeping things clean.
๐ผThe sticky pollen from flowering plants clings to the insect bodies, which is how it gets carried from one plant to the next ๐ฑ
According to WWF, 90% of wild plants and 75% of leading global crops depend on animal pollination ๐
โฑHowever, insect decline means a decline in pollinators which has dire consequences for the global food system.
Letโs end the day by celebrating their hard work! Thanks to our insects friends we see such beautiful flowers and plants around us every year ๐ธ ๐บ ๐น
& stay tuned to find out how we can have a positive impact on biodiversity loss!
โป๏ธ Weโre grateful that insects are such great recyclers!
๐ชฒ For example, beetles help to break down organic waste while they scavenge. By doing so, they add nutrients to the soil which is then used by plants! ๐ฑ
As a main food source to species such as birds ๐ฆ, insects are critical foundations to the stability of global food chains! ๐
Interestingly, insects are part of the traditional diets of approximately 2 billion humans worldwide ๐ฑ
They can contribute to food security through high nutritional value, low greenhouse gas emissions, and low requirements for land and water ๐คฏ๐
New topic incoming ... ๐ Over the next couple of days we're going to be talking about a few of the many reasons as to why we love insects! ๐งก
We'd absolutely love to hear what you guys love about insects too, so please do let us know ๐๐๐ชฒ๐
Let's get down to beesness... Although we're not supposed to have favourites, I think it's pretty obvious what ours are! ๐๐
Swipe for a few cool facts on our favourite insect - the bees! ๐๐งก
That tops off our wonderful world of insects, stay tuned for why we love insects! โ
Adult butterflies taste with their legs ๐คฏ, looking for the right plant to lay their eggs for their caterpillars to feed on! ๐
The adults eat from completely different plants, using their proboscis (straw-like mouth) to sip nectar ๐ง
With over 4000 species of beetle in the UK, it's likely you'll have encountered many throughout your life! ๐ฑ
The most well known beetles are ladybirds, even though their name suggests otherwise ๐
What's your favourite type of beetle? ๐ชฒ ours is the stag! ๐
Butterflies react very quickly to changes in the environment ๐ฆ making them fantastic biodiversity indicators ๐
โ๏ธButterfly decline is an early warning of other wildlife losses making these critters very valuable for assessing the health of our environment โ๏ธ
According to Somerset & Bristol Butterfly Conservation, 8 out of 59 species of butterflies in the U.K. have made their homes in Somerset ๐พ
These include the Blues, the Hairstreaks and the Whites ๐ฆ๐ฆ๐ฆ
Which butterflies have you seen in and around Bath? ๐

What are insects? ๐
๐ฑArthropods
๐ฑSix legs
๐ฑMost have wings
๐ฑLifecycle consists of egg, larva, to adult
Following that criteria, bees, wasps, beetles, butterflies, and moths can all be classified as insects! ๐
Can you name any other insects? ๐Comment below your favourites! ๐
NEW TOPIC ALERT ๐จ
Next week, weโll walk you through the various types of insects that can be commonly found in the UK! ๐
In the mean time, keep an eye out for our little friends!
