Happy bonfire night for tomorrow!🎇
We're posting a day earlier to share some tips on how to keep hedgehogs safe whilst you plan for your bonfires🔥
Here's just a few!
- Build bonfires on the day
- Shine a torch and look through the bonfire before lighting it
- Look and listen for signs of wildlife
- Ensure it is contained
Happy Halloween! 🎃
Once you're finished with your pumpkins after today, please do not dispose of it outside on the floor.
Unfortunately hedgehogs and their bellies do not agree with pumpkins. It can make them feel poorly as they cannot digest it! In a time when they are trying to gain weight for hibernation, this can be detrimental.
Please leave any spare pumpkin up high for the birds instead. 🐦
Have a spook-tastic night!
Meet Parsley, one of the hedgehogs that calls Newton Park campus home! 🦔👋
Parsley got into a spot of bother recently and had to go to the hogspital - but he’s now back to full health and has been released onto campus ready for hibernation season.
Read Parsley’s story and find out more about how we’re a Hedgehog Friendly Campus in our latest blog post!

We will be conducting hedgehog surveys on Wednesday the 28th of September at Newton Park and Corston Community Orchard to discover how many hedgehogs we have in our community!
Parsley was discovered this summer after he got himself into a spot of bother with a net and we would like to get a better idea of how many hogs may be out there!
Come along to Twinhoe (TEG04) at 11 am on Wednesday morning for basic training in Hedgehog Sampling and an overview of our hedgehog work at Bath Spa. We will also be taking a trip to Corston Community Orchard to sample hedgehogs in the local area! (Please be aware, the orchard is a 30-minute walk from the university through fields and rough ground, please wear suitable footwear)
These surveys will help us in our bid for Gold in the Hedgehog Friendly Campus awards!
If you have any questions or would like more information, please email [email protected]
With wall to wall sunshine and more to come it's especially important to remember to leave out water for wildlife, it can literally save lives in this hot dry weather. Pop a few pebbles in to allow insects to escape should they fall in.

From British Hedgehog Preservation Society - You may have seen in the news that West Berkshire Council has blocked an attempt by Newbury Town Council to have hedgehog highways as part of the planning conditions for developments in the town. West Berkshire Council claiming this will overburden planners.
Please sign the petition to let them know this is not the right decision!

Happy Hedgehog Awareness Week! 🦔
This week we will be celebrating British Hedgehogs and what we have done at BSU so far to help them thrive. But what is Hedgehog Awareness Week and why does it matter? Head over to our Instagram!
Hedgehog Awareness Week is an annual event, hosted by the British Hedgehog Preservation Society (who is 40 this year!)🥳
It aims to increase awareness of the troubles British Hedgehogs face and what we can do to help. Unfortunately British Hedgehogs are classed as vulnerable to extinction.
BHPS also has an annual fundraiser, to support its charitable activities, which includes funding Hedgehog Friendly Campus! You can find the link here: www.justgiving.com/campaign/HAW22
Follow Bath Spa University - Hedgehog Friendly Campus, Hedgehog Friendly Campus and British Hedgehog Preservation Society for tips on how to help our hedgehog friends.
We'll be joining People's Trust for Endangered Species and British Hedgehog Preservation Society for a special event!

Metaldehyde Slug Pellets are now banned in the UK - please spread the word!
With this warmer weather the number of calls for hedgehogs in need of help is increasing. Please remember hedgehogs don't sunbathe - if they are doing this they need urgent help.
Are you enjoying the warm weather?😍☀️
Hedgehogs are on the move again with many now starting to leave hibernation. You can help them directly from your own garden, here's two simple tips on how!
1) Leave out clean shallow bowls filled with water. Hedgehogs will be thirsty in this weather. Please no milk as it does not agree with their bellies!
2) Leave out a clean bowl of meat based cat, dog, or hedgehog food. You can even leave out meat based cat or hedgehog biscuits. This is a great top up from the insects hedgehogs will be eating 🐛 Please avoid bread.

Hello to all our hedgehog-friendly campus supporters!
We're running a hedgehog survey starting next Tuesday 5th October on the Newton Park campus and are looking for volunteers to help set out the tunnels that afternoon.
We're also looking for students (in pairs, but can buddy you up) to check the tunnels each morning before 10 am between Weds 6 October - Sunday 10th October. If you'd like to help out please either message the page or email [email protected]

We'll be running a number of events during the welcome weeks in late September. Including an introductory talk on what a hedgehog-friendly campus is, how to survey hedgehog activity followed by a 5-night survey before the start of the hibernation period. We'll update the page as the booking links open.

Heatwaves are quite nice for us, but pretty pants for wildlife.
A shallow dish of fresh water (on campus and at home!) could be a lifeline for hedgehogs this week!
