We were very sorry to learn about the death of Nick Cudworth in August 2021.

Nick was one of Kevin’s oldest friends, a pianist and guitarist who helped to shape both Siren albums, as well as contributing to ‘Case History’, ‘Lovesick Fool’, and others. In the sleeve notes for Cherry Red’s Siren reissues, Nick wrote about meeting Kevin for the first time in 1964, when he was 17 and Kevin was 20:

“I had only been attending Derby Art College for a few weeks when I noticed a sign saying ‘BLUES HOOT – Musicians Required’ pinned to the door of the lecture theatre. As I’ve already mentioned, most of the students had some musical interest if not the skills, and I turned up at the allocated time with my drum kit (Nick was playing drums at this point) to find myself surrounded by many harmonica players, guitarists and so on. I thought what a shambolic, disorganised lot they were, until I noticed a tense, solitary figure sitting in the seats away from the stage. Then came a seminal moment. This sound emerged, a voice accompanied by a harmonica that stopped everyone in their tracks. This was Kevin Coyne and for the first time in my life I thought, “This is the real thing”, with a sense that all my efforts up till then had been foolish, childish copying. This was real, pure musical power and I wanted to be part of it.”

After leaving Siren, Nick forged a career as a visual artist, establishing a successful gallery in Bath. You can see his work here:

A kind and loyal friend to Kevin, his art and music will endure.

‘Les’. Part of Nick’s single Portraits series. Comedy was another of Nick’s life-long passions and the one-of-a-kind Les Dawson was a firm favourite. The tight crop empathises that unique, engaging and very funny face. Available as Giclee print on our website

We love this photo of Nick at Chelsea School of Art in the swinging 60s with fellow students, including Alan Rickman, having fun and looking very dandy!

We were thrilled to be sent a copy of this beautifully produced book ‘Quotations as Pictures’ featuring Nick’s painting ‘Reading Between The Lines II’ on the cover. Written eloquently by the brilliant philosopher Josef Stern, there are many pages discussing Nick’s work, where the author develops a semantics for quotations drawn from philosophical theories of pictures.

We’ve framed up this little gem ready for the gallery - ‘Littleton Wood Barns - Winter’. This giclee print depicts a cool, crisp winters landscape near the village of Littleton outside Bath. Nick also painted the same quintessentially English view during the other seasons: Autumn, Spring and Summer, which show the natural passage of time over a year. Please visit the gallery or website to view all 4.

Nick Cudworth Gallery is based in an area called Walcot in Bath. It is such a unique, creative community with the most beautiful architecture and fantastic independent shops. Here are 2 paintings of the famous ‘Walcot Steps’. The first is Nick's vista looking up the steps at twilight, only a short walk from the gallery. The second is looking 'Down Walcot Steps' in the glistening morning sunshine and features a pop of bright red - the frontage of the infamous ‘John’s Bikes’ shop which is sadly no more. Both available as Giclee prints online or in our gallery.

It is with the heaviest of hearts that we share the news of the passing of the incredible artist and our wonderful dad, Nick Cudworth, in early August. He was a well-known fixture on Walcot Street in Bath in his beloved gallery. Nick truly loved Bath and the surrounding countryside and his paintings are testament to this. He leaves a wonderful body of artwork and many friends and loved ones who will miss him terribly. We, his children, are immensely proud of everything Nick achieved. We will carry on the gallery business as his legacy, as per his wishes. What a huge honour that will be.
