I'm starting an app to help you communicate with English-speakers.
What ONE desire about English do you have?
Do you like going for walks on a sunny winter's day? Love feeling the slight warmth of the sun on your face?
There's a word for that: APRICITY (noun) [ap-PRIS-it-ee]
"Morning apricity gives me the hope to begin a new day."
βThe apricity covered his hair, his arms, his whole body. And there he stood, dazed, under the winter sky.β
"When submitting papers for publication, non-native speakers are about 2.5 times more likely to have their work rejected for linguistic reasons β and they are 12.5 times more likely to have to make language-related revisions. So, even with equal or greater technical competence, they may have fewer career opportunities."
(The Guardian, 27th December 2023)
This new research shows that even if you consider your English to be of a high or advanced level, the chances are you will need help from a qualified English language coach at some point.

Did you meet any new people?

Do you know the story of Goldilocks and the Three Bears?
In the video below I show how the story is a metaphor for choosing an English Language coach.

Why Choosing a Language Coach is like Goldilocks and the Three Bears
Don't compromise.
Compromise is a language of the Devil.
Run...and let the world stand back in wonder.
Does anyone know which film the above quote comes from?

Feeling as rough as houses.
Since the weekend, I've had a rotten cold.
My throat feels like I've been gargling crushed glass;
My runny nose has used up 3 rolls of loo paper;
I feel like I'm going to faint every time I stand up;
And I've got aches and pains everywhere.
Yes, I feel as rough as houses.
I wonder if any of you have heard or used this phrase before...
It can mean:
Unpleasant.
For example:
"Don't go to that part of town; it's rough as houses there."
"Have you seen her new boyfriend? He's rough as houses. He's got neck tattoos, for a start!"
It can mean:
Hungover.
For example:
"We went clubbing last night cos they had a tequila promotion on. I drank my fair share, and now I'm feeling rough as houses."
It can mean:
Ugly or Untidy.
For example:
"Go and have a wash and shave; and put a clean shirt on. You look rough as houses, dad."
Or it can mean:
Feeling unwell, like I described at the top of this post.
I am not feeling rough as houses because I drank tequila. I have what some women like to tell us is "man-flu".
Trying to find the origin of this phrase is not easy.
Some experts say it comes from:
"a rough house", which was a pub where there was as much fighting as drinking going on each day.
Others think the "houses" may have been pronounced "ahhzizz", which is the plural of the rude word for your bums/bottoms (ar**s)
This would explain the phrase:
"as rough as a badger's arse".
It is used in the same way as "rough as houses":
"I feel as rough as a badger's arse. I overdid the tequila last night."
Anyway, whatever its origins, I'm feeling
rough as houses today.

It's difficult to find SILENCE in our busy lives. True, UNBROKEN SILENCE is even harder to find. The places where you can't hear a single thing are rapidly disappearing.
SILENCE is vital. Imagine if there were no gaps between our words or between musical notes. We'd go crazy.
But SILENCE can be scary for some people. Total silence can bring on thoughts of our own mortality. Being somewhere totally silent is a primeval experience. It's as if we are being transported back in time to pre-history.
SILENCE in conversation is often called AWKWARD SILENCE. But this silence is useful; it helps us digest what we have just heard. We don't need to be afraid of these silences and fill them with pointless "Umms and ahhs". Enjoy the silence.

Communication Skills - Body Language Did you know 90% of communication is done without words? It's quite common for people to concentrate on what they say rather than how they say it. You spend time worrying about whether your English is good enough to talk to somebody new.
No words needed.

Yum.
Hello Everyone,
I'm doing some research on the problems that learners have with communication skills in English.
I'd be really grateful if you could answer these 2 questions in the thread below.
Q1 What do you find difficult about making small talk and keeping a conversation going with speakers of English?
Q2 Have you had much experience with debating in English? If so, what problems have you had? (By debating I mean anything from "Which are better, Cats or Dogs?" to "Should we rely more on Nuclear Power for our electricity?" to a work situationππ)
Just a few words/lines for the questions is enough.
Anything you provide will really help.
Cheers, Simon

How annoying.
No, not this bloke on guitar.
Although, it is a bit samey.
No I came to the Roman Baths to make a video and renew my Discovery Card. Brought my passport and council tax bill for proof of identity; my sunny flowery shirt for the photo; Beastly Bath book to quote from; but forgot my gimball.
Ah, well. I'll try again tomorrow.
Stay tuned, folks.
