Artwork 003 w/ Long Island Sound

Ahead of Artwork 003 this Saturday, we invited the Phaze team to answer some quick fire questions about how they started their journey, and their plans for 2020.

Q. How did Phaze come about?

A. Phaze was an idea from JK (Jamie Kissock) and Gilmore’ that came about in Summer 2019, after throwing many sell out events as part of Jungle Book Legion, we wanted to begin a new brand and have our own events going in Belfast and Bangor.

Q. What would be the highlights of the brand journey to date?

A. We wanted to kick off Summer last year with a mad night so decided to use the space upstairs in Wolsey's Bar in Bangor town centre (which is a restaurant). We cleared as much space as possible to increase the capacity, and brought in a heavy sound system and lights set-up, which turned out to be great success. This caught the attention of OCD who got in touch to invite us up to have our first gig with them in Belfast, which was a combined night in art department that happened November, which again, was a great turn out for our first Belfast gig.

Q. Who are the PHAZE residents biggest influences music-wise?

A. Our biggest influences for our music would first of all, be each other and other locals that we play with. There’s not a better feeling than DJing with mates, hearing a song for the first time and being able to find out instantly what the tune is. Following the increase in popularity of local artists also such as BICEP was a huge influence on us, and seeing the effect they had on crowds was nothing short of breathtaking. Other artists too, such as Four Tet and Floating Points are also huge influences and many others alike.

Q. What’s your goals for 2020?

A. In 2020, we hope to throw an event every couple of months, and possibly bi-weekly over the summer period. We’re also hoping to get some seriously talented DJs and producers from across the water (and further afield), that most people who love dance music will have heard of before, and if they haven’t, then they will soon know.

Q. Do the PHAZE residents have upcoming releases?

A. As for the resident side of Phaze, you can expect to see lots of fresh material from Gilmore’ over the next few months, following his previous releases which have been fairly doing the rounds. Meanwhile Robbie has been currently testing new tracks in all his sets, while preparing for upcoming hybrid sets. Both of them have been smashing it and we fully expect new talent to join in the near future.

This Saturday Phaze go b2b with Paddy Chambers for a very special 3 hour set. They will be playing 10pm-1am in the new caged booth of the recently refurbished Belfast city centre night club - The Art Department, before Long Island Sound take over 1-3am.

Artwork 003 w/ Long Island Sound

Ahead of Artwork 003 this Saturday, we sat down with Belfast-based Paddy Chambers and asked him a few quick-fire questions.

Q. When did you start DJ'ing and why?

A. I've been DJing for around 7 years now, it's something that started from posting music I liked on my Facebook to getting asked to DJ in a club. Which has stemmed into a passion that has only but grown into a lovely journey of playing tunes and meeting lots of lovely people along the way.

Q. What would be the highlights of your journey so far?

A. So far the highlights would have to be playing the second week of UFO BELFAST in Limelight Belfast, the sound system, the lights, the crowd and the hype around the new night starting were just the perfect recipe for a cracker night, to which it lived up to be.

Q. Who would be your biggest influences music-wise?

A. Honestly too many to choose from, ones that stand out would have to be Honey Dijon - the house queen, although I wasn't there for her boiler room set at Sugar Mountain. It's just stuck with me on the level of energy brought to that set. As well as Palms Trax, the man's never played a bad set in his life. Not to mention the amount of local talent right now is so sick, for me, it's very very inspiring.

Q. Whats your goal for the future?

A. Goals for the future would probably entail getting an EP or two signed, and getting that first across sea's gig, it feels like a good achievement for a DJ to unlock.

Q. Any upcoming releases?

A. Nothing so called signed yet, although lots and lots and lots of music in the works, I just need to sort it all out and decide what to do with it all! Very exciting.

ARTIST ANNOUNCEMENT - Shampain

TONIGHT, we welcome one of Galway's rising stars; Shampain, for his *BELFAST DEBUT* for at the recently refurbished night club - The Art Department.

As one of Ireland’s premiere talents, Shampain would be easy to label as ‘unique’ like many other DJs on the go right now.

His tireless work ethic has landed him a coveted residency with Galway’s Electric club in his hometown, not to mention stand out slots at Electric Picnic, Boxed Off, District 8 and clubs all over the island in the past year.

His passion for radio has led to his Techno, Bass, Break and Grime-y style making it all the way to multiple shows on London’s Rinse FM with Mall Grab / Jordon Alexander, DJ Haus and KETTAMA plus regular slots on Rinse France to go along with Bristol’s Noods Radio and a residency on RTE Pulse too.

All that along with cultivating his VSN collective which he founded with the above mentioned G-Town native KETTAMA. The party series has thrived for 3 years now, playing host to guests and close friends like Tommy Holohan, IMOGEN, Miley Serious, Special Request, Fadi Mohem and a whole lot more between both Galway and Dublin to raving crowds of people.

With his popularity at an all time high and rising, 2020 is looking like a huge year for the youngster, who is carving out a career that looks like it’ll pan out more marathon-like than a sprint, despite the lofty pace he sets widespread across dancefloors!

Artwork 002 w/ Shampain [Belfast Debut]

Ahead of Artwork 002, we had a lovely chat with the Derry-born dynamic duo known as H O T L I N E and asked them a few quick-fire questions.

Q. How did you both get started?
A. "We originally met through working at Shine together and both shared an interest in dance music. We both had controllers so started messing about on them and then eventually worked our way towards our first gig with OCD."

Q. What would be the highlights of your DJ’ing careers to date?
A. "Playing events like Shine, Twitch, Industry etc. is always an amazing experience. We've got to play alongside some incredible DJ’s."

Q. Who would be your biggest influences music-wise?
A. "Skin on Skin, Special Request, Mall Grab and a lot of hip hop / rap artists such as Kanye West influence a lot of our music selection and production."

Q. What’s your goals for 2020?
A. "We'd love to feature in a festival line up this year as we feel it’s the next step gig wise. As well as that we'll hopefully get a track or two signed to a label which would be great."

Q. Any upcoming releases?
A. "We plan to release a lot more this year as we've finally found a sound that we enjoying creating and playing out. We just released our first track of 2020 "Clique" over on Houz and will be releasing another track soon on Definite Party Material."
