Yesterday, I was choosing wallpaper for my hallway. I was looking at many colours when two women approached me. They thought I was very good with colours because I chose ones that went well together. They asked for my opinion on their bedroom wallpaper.
I enjoy helping people with colour choices. So, I asked if they had thought about their bed or rug colour, and the answer was that they had not.

This is a common mistake that homeowners make when choosing wallpaper without thinking about all the room’s colours. If wallpaper inspires you, you take it with you when shopping for your bed or rug. You only create a harmonious look in your space when colours are related to each other.

Another way to choose colours is to pick a big item first, like a bed or rug. Then, find wallpaper that goes well with it. Why? Because there are more wallpaper choices than furniture colours. Choosing the big item first also helps visualize the wall colour better.

In the end, they were very happy with my advice and decided to choose a bed first.

This happens when we don't compare the sofa's colour with the new curtains we're adding. Comparing colours is very important. Whenever you want to add something new to your room, always compare its colour with everything else in the room. Take a small piece of the new fabric and look at it next to your sofa, carpet, armchair and any other items in your room. Compare, compare, compare.

Before diving into paint colour choices, it's important to have already decided on colours for your major elements like your sofa, rug (if you are refreshing your living room), kitchen countertop or tiles (if you are renovating your kitchen.

Why the fuss? Well, your wall colour should harmonize with these items to create a cohesive and flowing space. So, gather up those fabric swatches or finishes and compare them with the paint chips in the palette. Once you've pinpointed a colour that relates to the samples, you can consider selecting the exact colour match or shades that are a touch lighter or darker than your samples. 💖🎨

Here's a tip: take some free paint samples and test them out in your space. Try a few options, then return to the paint store, buy the smallest can and then paint it on the poster board. These larger samples will give you a clearer picture, helping you confidently make that final decision. 🎨🖌️
