I’m often asked what cupping is and what it is for?

Cupping has increased in popularity in recent years with many celebrities and athletes having it done. It involves the use of glass or plastic cups to vacuum the skin and muscle into a bump which are left on for a few minutes, leaving obvious red bruises in the shape of circles. I often say it is deep tissue massage but instead of pressing down, depressing the tissue and pushing away the blood, the tissue is pulled up into the cups, drawing blood to the targeted area. Traditionally cups were made of clay, bamboo or an animal horn. Now they are glass, plastic or silicone rubber. The vacuum in glass cups is made by burning out the oxygen which enables pressure to be created inside the cup, whereas the plastic cups use a more modern pumping action to pump out the air.
So what is cupping for? Cupping bursts capillaries in the surface of the skin by drawing blood to the surface. Activating the healing effect in those capillaries and forcing circulation to areas which may suffer from poor circulation bringing fresh blood and with blood, fresh oxygen. It stimulates muscle recovery, releases tension in the fascia, breaks down adhesions and enables healing.
In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) the body is mapped with points based on channels from the meridian theory where energy called Qi (Chi) flows, corresponding to illnesses often known as blockages. The releasing of these blockages strengths the body’s natural defences by creating a balance within the body.
Wet cupping involve placing single-use disposable plastic cups to key areas, then removing them to make small surgical incisions before replacing the cups to the key areas. Blood is drawn which is often called dirty blood, containing old blood cells, plasma and platelets and toxins. Enabling the body to produce fresh blood cells with fresh haemoglobin to supply oxygen to organs and tissue. Cupping can range from 3 to 8 being used in a session depending on the required points and a persons previous response to treatment.
Cupping can be used for a multitude of health conditions.
