How going phone-free taught pupils at English secondary ‘to socialise, old school’ 15/09/2024

Our vision is for a school system where every child can thrive.

Learning, behaviour and wellbeing are top priorities in our schools, but all can be impacted negatively by smartphones.

We want to reduce the risks associated with smartphones in our schools and give young people the freedom to learn, play and socialise without the distraction and social pressures that phones and social media can bring.

This autumn, a quarter of our secondary schools are piloting different approaches to ensure that pupils experience a smartphone-free school day. One of our schools has operated like this for a number of years and the approach is really successful and popular with both parents and students.

We know our schools are at different stages of this journey and that changes will happen over time. Where there are changes made to our schools’ policies, these will always be made in consultation with parents and the school community. Although we are a national trust, we value the local context of each school and the importance of the relationship between schools and their communities.

We’ve been grateful to learn from other schools and trusts and their work in this area including The John Wallis Church of England Academy and Smartphone Free Childhood. As we progress with this project, we’re committed to sharing what we learn with others in the sector.

This week, we welcomed Education Editor Richard Adams from The Guardian to Tenbury High Ormiston Academy to talk about their approach and we’re pleased to share their story, along with the work taking place at Official Cowes Enterprise College.
