Every week is different!

Kate was at Deutsche Bank teaching adult first aid awareness for staff that would like to learn first aid during their lunch break, what a lovely perk. Sarah was teaching Baby and Child at one of our open classes available in and around Birmingham. I taught NCT families this evening and we still have a few teens classes to go this week, two more Baby & Child classes, a networking meeting and a Baby Fayre!
Each week is never the same and never dull!

Go team Brum!

⚠️ Christmas Toy Warning - Magnets ⚠️

“These small magnets look so innocuous, but if a child swallows them, the magnets stick together and cut off blood supply, causing tissue to die.”

These are the words of Katrina Phillips, chief executive of Child Accident Prevention Trust, about super strong magnetic balls that have caused the death of at least one child here in the UK in recent years.

In 2021, the NHS issued a patient safety alert after at least 65 children were admitted to hospital for urgent surgery in the three years prior to this after swallowing magnets.

The magnetic objects are forced together in the intestines or bowels, squeezing the tissue so that the blood supply is cut off. Ingesting more than one can be life-threatening and cause significant damage within hours.

There have been known TikTok viral trends in which children and teenagers use these magnets as fake facial piercings, placing magnetic balls on both sides of the tongue or cheek but they are small and can be easily swallowed.

If these magnets are on your child's Christmas list, please consider the risks. Just like button batteries, small magnets like this should always be kept out of reach of babies and toddlers 💚

ALARMING LOLLIPOPS & SCARY SWEETIES

These colourful treats are very appealing to our children and although they may seem harmless, they are actually a serious choking hazard! ⚠️

The hard, round sweet can come off the stick and block a child’s airway. This happens silently and if you’re not watching you might not even notice.

When you’re stocking up on treats this Halloween, please remember that it's not just lollipops that can be dangerous for little ones. Other hard candy, marshmallows and mini eggs in particular can pose a serious choking risk. So please pick another treat and scare safely this Halloween!

If you are concerned you would not know what to do in a choking incident, sign up to one of our Mini First Aid classes today!

Everyone loves a good scare on Halloween, but not when it comes to the safety of our little trick-or-treaters! 🎃👻🧙‍♀️

Venturing out onto the roads around Halloween night can be more treacherous than you might think. The potential for vehicle related accidents with young pedestrians is significantly greater during Halloweek. ⚠️

If you drive, take a look over these road safety tips to avoid getting spooked: 🚗🚛🚚🚕🚜🏍

❗️• Slow down and be alert! Children are excited during Halloween and may dart into the road. Turn on headlights early in the day to spot children from further away.

❗️• Watch out for children who may think it’s a good idea to take a break and munch their treats on the roadside!

❗️• Even if you have spent time showing YOUR children how to cross the road properly, be mindful that not all parents will have done the same. Sometimes children panic when it comes to crossing the roads and their actions can be erratic and dangerous. Be patient!

❗️• Children are likely to be visiting houses in your neighbourhood so if you are pulling in or out of a driveway, do so slowly and with great care.

❗️• If you are dropping off or collecting your children, choose a safe spot to stop. Children may jump in to or out of the car without a thought for passing traffic.

BE SEEN! 👀

In this famous photo comparison by Christian Thomas, the same child is standing at the side of the road wearing different clothing. Can you see them? This really highlights the importance of children wearing bright colours to stay visible for drivers!

Halloween party season is upon us and whilst it's all about the scares, there are some horrors we want you to avoid!

Today we are talking CREEPY COSTUMES 🧙‍♀️

No Halloween costume is completely safe. As with all clothing, Halloween and fancy dress outfits should always be kept away from fire, lit candles and all other naked flames

All fabrics will burn on contact with a naked flame, so have a read of our infographic here for some important steps you can take to make sure your child's costume is as safe as it can be.

In addition to these precautions, there is one more thing you can look out for - companies may also choose to label garments with the additional statement "This garment has undergone additional safety testing for flammability" if they have passed the additional testing requirements of the British Retail Consortium Code of Practice. This means that if a dress-up costume catches light it may still burn, but the speed at which the flame spreads is slower. Homemade dress-up costumes or those not tested to the same flammability standards may ignite easily and burn quicker.

STOP. DROP. ROLL.🔥

Ahead of both Halloween and bonfire night, make sure children know what to do if their clothes catch fire. The instinct is to run. So encourage them to practice stopping, dropping to the ground, covering their face with their hands, and rolling over a few times to put out the flames.

FRIGHTENING FLAMES 🔥🔥🔥

Who are you trick or treating with this Halloween? Tag them below to keep the fun safe… 🎃

🕯️🚫 It’s obvious, but the safest thing is to NOT USE REAL FLAME CANDLES in your pumpkins! Whilst pumpkins lit with candles look spooktacular, they can be highly dangerous.

🔋 Consider using battery operated candles instead. They are a stress free option - if one gets knocked over or left on, nobody will get hurt and nothing gets damaged.

🕯️👀 Whilst YOU might use battery operated LED candles, this doesn’t mean other people will. Warn your children to be wary of decorations either on the ground or being carried as they may have a lit flame in them, and supervise children, especially when approaching decorated doorsteps.

⛑️ BURNS FIRST AID ⚠️

Knowing what to do if your child suffers a burn is vital. Follow our handy image here to COOL, CALL, COVER.

👚💍 REMOVE any clothing or jewellery near the burnt area of skin as it is likely to swell.

✋🚫 DO NOT TOUCH touch the burn or try to remove any clothing that might be stuck to it.

🏃‍♀️THE QUICKER you can provide burns first aid the better BUT, there is a 2-hour window after the accident happens, when running cool water over the burn will still help to reduce the likelihood of scarring.

⏱️ The more cooling you can do at home the better - 20 minutes is recommended. Yes, 20 MINUTES!

🥶🙅‍♀️ Be careful not to let your child get too cold. Use COOL WATER rather than cold.

🧊⛔️ Definitely DON’T USE ICE!

👉 Keep that cling film handy, have fun & stay safe! 👻

For lots of parents, gaining an extra hour in bed when the clocks change doesn't really apply as our kids don't seem to get that memo! What we do have to do is factor in the effect the clock change has on our child's sleep routine and try to navigate and manage this change.

We have some brilliant tips here from Leanne, a sleep consultant at Little Dreams Consulting Birmingham on how to navigate the change for newborns, babies and toddlers.

Are you dreading the clock change or do you think your little one will take it in their stride?! 💤 🤞

Kate was with Year 6 all day learning everything First Aid. ⛑️ 🩹

We anticipate lots of conversations happening at home this evening and practising putting their grown ups in the recovery position. 💚

Thank you St Margaret’s of Hasbury, Church of England School for putting first aid as a priority for children to learn. 🫶🏻

Did you know learning first aid is on the national curriculum for all children?

We love when schools think hands-on practise is better than watching a video. We hope you agree!?
