Do you have a child in Reception or Year 6?
If so, this year you will receive a letter for your child to take part in the National Child Measurement Programme (NCMP). We now have a dedicated Screening team who will be visiting schools one area at a time throughout the academic year.
So... What is NCMP and what does it mean for my childβ
This means every year in England school children in Reception and Year 6 have their height and weight checked at school. The measurements are used to calculate your child's BMI and weight status. Receiving the NCMP letter means that your child's measurements will be taken in the coming weeks.
The information collected is used to better understand numbers and trends in child weight and BMI. This helps with the planning of services to support healthy lifestyles in your area.
Your child's weight and height will be carried out by trained healthcare providers in a private and sensitive way, your child will not be told their measurements on the day.
It is important to be aware that should you wish for your child to be opted out, or if your child has a medical condition that effects their weight or height, you should contact your school to let them know as soon as possible. This ensures that your child is opted-out of the NCMP programme and therefore will not be screened.
If you are concerned about your child's growth, weight, body image or eating patterns, seek further support from your GP. Our Screeners look forward to meeting your wonderful children very soon π
βΌA common myth is that BMI is not an accurate method of measuring. This is NOT true. Watch the video below to find out why!β¬οΈ

Swapping sugary foods and drinks for healthier and lower sugar options is only one of the steps in helping to look after our teeth and prevent tooth decay.
We also need to make sure we are brushing our teeth as this helps to prevent the build up of plaque and protects our gums from disease and inflammation π¦·
By brushing for 2 minutes twice a day, everyday, you are giving your teeth the care that they deserve - lets make sure we are looking after them to save our smiles! π
Here is a helpful video which children can use during toothbrushing - they can follow along with the characters on the screen to make sure they are cleaning in the right places π¦·

We all love a sweet treat now and then, but did you know that many of the foods and drinks we consume every day are loaded with hidden sugars? From sodas to cereals, even "healthy" snacks like granola bars, the sugar content can be shocking. π¬π
Consuming high amounts of sugar from food and drinks such as fizzy drinks, sweets and biscuits is one of the major and most significant causes of tooth decay in both children and adults.
To reduce your sugar intake and limit your risk of tooth decay, try swapping sugary drinks for water, sugar free juices, or milk. Instead of snacking on sweets and biscuits, try swapping these for a piece of fruit ππ
βΌοΈ Tooth decay is the most common oral disease affecting children and young people in England βΌοΈ
It is so important we teach our children and young people the importance of looking after our teeth.
The top 3 interventions for preventing tooth decay are;
- Reducing the amount of foods and drinks that contain sugar ππ₯€
- Brushing our teeth twice daily πͺ₯
- Regular check ups at the Dentist π¦·
