Message from Fr Richard: Sunday Mass Attendance
It is good to see people at Sunday Mass and especially as confidence increases, more people are attending, including single people, couples and families. In fact, our average Mass attendance on Sunday morning has increased to the point where we are now struggling to seat everyone who wishes to come to that Mass.
We are fortunate at St Mary’s to have had public Masses for quite some time. This has only been possible due to the consistent support and commitment of our stewards who have been volunteering since the church re-opened for public Mass last September. They arrive thirty minutes before Mass begins and they stay for at least thirty minutes afterwards to clean the church. Their help is invaluable. Please be respectful and compliant when the stewards ask you to sit in a certain place. They ask this of you simply to maximise the available seating capacity in church, which is limited at the moment, so that they do not have to turn people away who arrive to a full church. Please trust the stewards to know what they are doing and to help them to help others in this way. Unfortunately, last Sunday the stewards had to turn some people away from church because there was no more space. This is not the situation I want for the Parish and it can be avoided by co-operating with the stewards.
Last week I re-introduced the Saturday Vigil Mass which I hope you will consider attending if you can, instead of coming on Sunday morning, thus freeing up space in church. I also appreciate that many parishioners like to come to Sunday Mass as well as Mass during the week. However, due to the growing numbers attending on Sunday morning, I must request that you only come to one Mass per week. If you are able, please attend Mass on a weekday (rather than Sunday) and do not then attend again on Sunday. This allows families and people with work commitments to attend Mass at the weekend.
In my opinion, it is preferable to keep our arrangements as open as possible so that you are free to attend Mass without further restriction. However, if we cannot adjust to the situation I have indicated, we will need to introduce a booking system, which some Parishes are already using. It will be necessary then to book before coming to any public Mass in church. This will be more limiting, but it will ensure that we do not have to turn people away.
Finally, I know that it is deeply ingrained in us that we should come to Sunday Mass and that is certainly what we should do under normal circumstances. However, you may recall the message that the Bishops gave us some time ago and which still applies: there is presently no obligation to come to Sunday Mass. While the Church gives us this dispensation, we can continue to encounter Christ in the Eucharist whatever day it is.
With prayers and good wishes,
Fr Richard.

It will be necessary to book in order to attend one of the Masses listed above. Booking can be done either by emailing the Parish Secretary on the usual email address: [email protected] or by calling: 07309 744018. The secretary will be answering this ‘phone during her normal office hours. Outside this time you may leave a message. When contacting us to make a booking, you will need to give:
-The date and time of Mass you wish to attend
-Your name
-A contact telephone number
-The number of people in your household coming to the Mass (up to a maximum of six)
When you make a booking, either by email or by leaving a ‘phone message, we will only contact you if there is a problem. Otherwise, you can be assured that you are booked in for that Mass. We will do our best to ensure that you secure a booking at the Mass of your choice, but please be understanding and flexible if this is not possible.
As we know, the government is allowing up to three households to form a special larger Christmas support bubble, but for the purposes of public worship, the ‘rule of six’ will still apply. This means that a booking can only be made for up to six people from the same household or support bubble. If another group from the same larger ‘Christmas bubble’ wishes to attend the same Mass, that’s fine, but it will have to be a separate booking of up to six people and social distancing will still apply inside the church (e.g. sitting on separate pews). We cannot take an individual booking of more than six people. The final date for bookings will be Tuesday 22nd December.
Today marks the start of Advent and the beginning of a new liturgical year. This is always an exciting time as we approach the great celebration of Christmas. This year the sense of anticipation is clouded by the spectre of prolonged social limitations which make us uncertain as to what we can do and how our lives will be affected. This coming week we are at least emerging from the recent lockdown and this means that we can return to having public Mass in church and with that, a return to our sacramental children making their first Holy Communion. We give thanks for that.
As we enter Advent, we are already preparing for Christmas and considering how best we organise our time-table of Masses. This has yet to be finalised, but it will be different to what we’re used to. The church capacity remains limited, so I will be offering more Masses and there will have to be a booking system for people to come to Mass. It must be done this way to avoid too many people arriving for the same Mass and some having to be turned away. Next weekend I will announce the Mass times and explain the simple way in which people and families can book their place. It will be important to appreciate that there is no obligation to attend Mass on Christmas Day itself – this would be practically impossible at the moment anyway, due to the limited seating capacity in church. As Bishop John explained last weekend in his Pastoral Letter, he is inviting everyone to attend one Christmas Mass during the ‘Christmas Octave’, which is the period between Christmas and New Year. In this way our church attendance can be spread over several days.

Once again our country is placed in a lockdown situation which has an impact on the Church. Sadly, Public Masses and other gatherings in our church are suspended until the lockdown is lifted.
Many of the Martyrs met their fate in some way because they held to the belief that Jesus is King of the Universe and King of the World. This brought them into conflict with the ruling powers of their day; kings, emperors and politicians who saw themselves as the legitimate rulers of the world (or at lest their part of it). The events of this year and the limitations that politicians have brought down on us may challenge our belief that Jesus is the King. But Jesus is first and foremost the King of our hearts, if we let him in. This is his true throne which no external pressure can undermine. Our churches were closed, then open again and now must remain closed for a short time more. But on this feast of Christ the King, we remember that we carry Jesus with us wherever we are and that he must be King of all we say and do.
Due to the ongoing refurbishments and decoration taking place in church, it will be closed this week as there is a large build-up of dust and the decorators need uninterrupted access. However, Fr Richard will be offering YouTube Masses on each day:
Tuesday 24th – 10am - YouTube Mass (St Andrew Dung-Lac & Companions)
Wednesday 25th – 10am - YouTube Mass
Thursday 26th – 6:30pm- YouTube Mass

Saturday 28th – 11am YouTube Mass
