It was a great pleasure to meet David Durkan this week. Pictured signing copies of his new guidebook to Holyhead Mountain.

24/06/2022

A quirky definitive to Holyhead Mountain by David Durkan who, in 1967 wrote the first guide to the crag. I have a small number of signed copies available, message me if you would like a one.

Holyhead Mountain Climbs on ... with Gogarth & Rhoscolyn by David Durkan, published by Swami Kailash Publications, June 2022, 59 page perfect bound paperback, W 152mm × H 229mm, £10.00 + £1.95 P+P.

‘In 1967, whilst stationed at RAF Valley, David Durkan published his first guidebook to Holyhead Mountain. Some fifty-five years later a new definitive guidebook takes a sentimental look back at David’s association and the history of the crag. This quirky fifty-nine page book describes 144 routes over fifteen sectors; a labour of love, if I have ever seen one.’ David Price.

Holyhead Mountain is one of North Wales most popular fair weather crags, and has a history that goes back to pre-Roman times. Its summit was surrounded by a Celtic fortress. Climbing began around 1955, mainly by Mountain Rescue Team members stationed at RAF Valley.

Along came a motley group of Holyhead schoolboys who, after one day climbing on the Milestone Buttress bought a rope, one sling and a screwgate carabiner. Two routes were climbed that first day, Hat and Plimsoll both graded V.Diff. David Durkan with the rest of his school hill-walking club soon established over thirty climbs. Inspired by Alan Blackshaws book Mountaineering, the then bible of climbing techniques. 'That we survived those early days is a miracle in itself’ notes the author.

The locals did not claim first ascents, feeling most lines to be so obvious that someone had probably climbed them already. However, they did name them, often in association with their first ascents which were often epic! Along came grades, lengths and descriptions. This led to Durkan’s first guidebook, Holyhead Mountain, a twelve page pamphlet published in 1967. Four years later he produced MONA, the first commercially printed guide to the mountain and an introduction to the newly discovered Rhoscolyn Cliffs. MONA also included local articles in the spirit of a club journal.

Holyhead Mountain Climbs on ..., was originally to be named Mona Revisited as the guide follows the same club journal style with articles on Gogarth and Rhoscolyn intertwined. And, a novelty in today's guidebook world, narrative on how many of the routes got their names – something Chris Bonington notes in his afterword, 'A nice twist – to a lovely little guide.'

Wow, just wow! Last week, I finally made the effort to visit Liverpool Central Library. It was a great pleasure and the building itself is sensational. An outrageous combination of the old and new architecture which complements beautifully. The library has a good selection of climbing and mountaineering narratives and guidebooks. I highly recommend a visit!

On Friday the 13th of August I had the pleasure of witnessing Gary Gibson complete his 5000th new route. Quite a remarkable achievement. I see this as a team effort, his wife, Hazel Gibson, supported Gary over many decades. Hazel belayed Gary on a new route at Harpur Hill, On the Stroke of 5,000.

I simply cannot imagine this record will ever be repeated.

You might not know, Gary also wrote, compiled or edited twenty one UK climbing guidebooks. Perhaps it's time for a rest – I don't think so!

Yet another guidebook, I can hardly keep pace with new publications at the moment. I don't think there has been a period with so much activity around UK climbing guidebooks.

David Cross published four bouldering guides including his latest, Forrest Blocks. Cotswold Circuits 2011, Cotswold Circuits 2nd edition 2013 and Quarry life 2019. I have a few copies of Quarry life available signed at £16.00 ISBN 978-1-5272-4869-4

The first edition of Forrest Blocks, just fifty copies sold out. This is a reprint and is marked as such with a slightly different cover. Another small print run which will be the last! I have a limited number of signed copies. £12.50 + £1.50 P+P

Forrest Blocks – A Quarry Life Supplement Bouldering in the Forrest of Dean, David Cross, Roots-Climbing, July 2021, 39 page A5 perfect bound paperback, signed by David Cross, (only 50 copies published), reprint with a slight amendment to the cover £12.50 + post.

Be a part of a unique publication which celebrates a major milestone in UK climbing guidebook history. A customer wrote, ‘WOW! If you haven’t ordered one then I recommend you get one! – Content and artwork superb!’ And a second wrote, ‘‘Your Wilton Quarries Guide is an absolute triumph. It’s fantastic!’

You don’t need to climb in Lancashire to enjoy this book, it is so much more than just a practical guide. Exclusively Illustrated by Malc Baxter who created his first crag diagram in 1961, this book celebrates a career in illustrating for sixty years, an unprecedented achievement. Selected Climbs and Bouldering in Wilton Quarries has been jointly published with Vertebrate and the design by Rosie Edwards is beyond our wildest dreams. A signed limited edition of just five hundred copies, the book describes some of the best quarried gritstone climbing and bouldering in the country!

Loan copies will be available at Bolton and Manchester Central Libraries as well as Lancashire Climbing and Caving Club lending library.

Just published, East London Climbing (and sculpture) Guide. Although this is a fold-up sheet, not a book, it would definitely qualify as a climbing guide. Published by The Steep Learning Group, all proceeds go to Project One Climbing. An organisation that encourage young people to climb outdoors. I have three spare copies if you would like one. They are £5.00 or order direct from the Steep Learning website!
