Dear Parents/Carers,
It certainly felt like summer in school today. 🌞 With the forecast for a very sunny week ahead and high levels of UV, this is a reminder about our hot weather procedures.
We have reached the yellow alert level in our action plan, which means:
• Children/staff will be encouraged to take off jumpers, undo top buttons, remove ties and wear hats outside – children not wearing sun hats will need to play in the shade.
• Use sunscreen (at least SPF15), applied at home (staff are not to apply sun cream on children in school).
• Children playing/working outdoors will be encouraged to stay in the shade as much as possible.
• We will encourage children to eat normally and drink plenty of water.
• We will close indoor blinds, but not block window ventilation.
Thank you for your support.
Day 2 - Y6 Residential
What a day we’ve had! After yesterday’s excitement, we didn’t think things could get any better, but today was packed with adventure, laughter, and a little bit of exhaustion (all in good spirits, of course).
The day began with coasteering—an activity that sounded mysterious and slightly terrifying to some of us. But once we got going, we realized it was all about embracing the wild waves and the great outdoors. We tumbled and splashed around with glee, facing the crashing surf like seasoned adventurers. There were some brave souls who took daring leaps off rocks (don’t worry, it was all very safe) and had us cheering them on. The dreaded hill climb back up was an adventure in itself. Let’s just say, there were more than a few dramatic collapses (purely for effect, obviously) and plenty of “Are we climbing Mount Everest?” comments.
Next up was jumbo paddle boarding, which is just as fun as it sounds. Picture a giant paddleboard with all of us scrambling to stay on and you’ll get the idea. We played games like Fruit Salad, where the key was to balance and switch places without sending everyone tumbling into the water—easier said than done! The highlight, though, had to be the spectacular poses we struck as we jumped off the board. Some were so good they deserved a perfect 10 from an Olympic diving judge. Others…well, let’s just say we’ll be sticking to paddle boarding for now.
After all that activity, we were ravenous. Dinner was a hearty meal of burgers and chips, with an optional salad bar (yes, the salad bar was a highlight for some—shocking, we know!). Bellies full, we were ready for the evening’s entertainment: a campfire. Nothing beats the classic combination of games, songs, and marshmallows. We learned the fine art of toasting marshmallows to a perfect golden brown. A few brave (or perhaps misguided) souls went for the charred approach—extra crispy! Funky Chicken was a particular favourite campfire song, and we sang it with gusto.
We even had a surprise visit from Mr. Ruffle. He joined in the fun, though we’re not sure if he was more impressed by our singing or our marshmallow toasting skills. Either way, we’re pretty sure he’s ready to sign up for next year’s camp!
When bedtime rolled around, it was a different story from the previous night. After a day jam-packed with fun and excitement, the tents were much quieter. We were all so exhausted that even the most determined whisperers couldn’t keep their eyes open—and that was just the teachers!
Quotes from Day 2
“I felt like an explorer conquering the waves during coasteering! The jumps were thrilling!”
“Paddle boarding was amazing! Especially when we all fell off trying to play Fruit Salad.”
“Today was the best day ever! Can’t wait for more!”
“What do you mean we have to go back to school on Monday?”
Day 1 - Y6 Residential
After a smooth coach journey, full of excitement and anticipation (and several rounds of ‘3 Lions On A Shirt’), we arrived at Purbeck Valley Farm to start our residential adventures.
Luke, our trip leader, met us at the coach and, after the mammoth task of carrying our luggage to the neighbouring field, the moment we had all been waiting for was finally here: the tent and day groups were finally revealed!
While eagerly awaiting our lunch, we organised our tents (some more successfully than others) and prepared ourselves for our first activities.
Splitting into two groups, some of us headed off for Nightline while others went to play Archery tag.
With Nightline, we had to put our trust in our (sighted) team leader as the rest of us wore goggles which meant we were plunged into darkness! We completed an obstacle course which ended with us having to duck to avoid swinging balls (aimed at us by leaders and teachers)!
Archery tag was a team battle, where we used the skills we had learnt at Butchers Coppice to fire at each other (and the teachers)!
In the evening, we headed to Swanage for delicious fish and chips and ice cream. Our activity was crabbing and we caught loads - as well as a few slippery eels!
Back at the campsite, we had time to play in the field, before heading to our tents after sunset.
After lights out, we stopped talking straight away and immediately fell asleep (well that’s what we were supposed to do)! 😊
A great first day was had by all!
Quotes from day 1
‘Crabbing was my favourite thing - it was a shock of amazement when we caught some!’
‘I had a great day. The best bit was making memories with my friends.’
‘I can’t wait for tomorrow so we can have even more fun!’
