An extra bank holiday is being held on Monday to mark the coronation of King Charles III, which takes place today.

On 8 May, all student services across both campuses will be closed; this includes SportBU. The facilities that will be open on this day are the libraries and the University Retreat.

Academics from BU have launched a new project designed to grow the power of young disability rights activists in East and Central Africa.

The project, funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council, includes a new advocacy and research network and a programme of knowledge exchange events between disability advocates, academics, campaigning organisations, and the media.

The BFX Festival, one of the largest animation, visual effects (VFX) and gaming festivals in the UK, has announced its 2023 dates; the eleventh festival will be hosted Monday, 20 to Saturday, 25 November 2023, at The Hilton Bournemouth and across the university's Talbot Campus.

A full programme of speakers from the games, VFX, and animation sectors will be announced later in the year, along with masterclasses where attendees can develop their creative and technical skills.

As part of the current refurbishment works to the ground floor of Dorset House, please be advised that there will be work affecting the main central entrance this Friday, 5 May.

This means there is no access to the lift for this day only. Please consider working in an alternative location on campus or from home on Friday if you require the lift to access to your normal working area.

The staircase will still be accessible on Friday via the east entrance.

Today sees the kick-off of Varsity 2023, with the first round of games taking place at Southampton Solent Sports Complex. The remaining games take place at Chapel Gate on Wednesday, May 10.

BU Students are welcome to attend these indoor fixtures throughout today but must arrange their own transport.

On Friday, 5 May, SportBU will run REVIVE, a one-day health and well-being event.

It will offer all BU students a range of well-being advice and any physical rehabilitation that is needed. Whether you're looking to make progress with your health and fitness goals or simply take a break from your computer, there's something for everyone to enjoy and benefit from.

Andy Phippen, Professor of IT Ethics and Digital Rights at BU has researched what parents need to know about keeping their children safe while interacting with the metaverse.

While new terms such as the metaverse and unfamiliar technology like VR headsets might make us fear these things are new, as with most things in the digital world, they are simply progressions of what has come before.

The Postgraduate Research Experience Survey (PRES) is now live and available for all postgraduate research (PGR) students to take part in.

The PRES survey is confidential, and BU will use the feedback to inform BU-wide enhancements to the PGR experience and inform faculty-level improvements to the research environment and support for PGRs.

As part of our commitment to improving your student experience, we are adding a new lift to the Sir Michael Cobham Library.

This will complement the existing lift and help students and staff to access the upper floors of the building. As well as improving accessibility for everyone, especially wheelchair users. To construct the new lift shaft, from today, until 15 May, the contractor will be carrying out piling works to support the existing foundations.

Abier Hamidi, PhD Candidate, Faculty of Health & Social Sciences at BU, has discussed how social media now trumps traditional family networks in Libya.

Abier researched HIV awareness among married women in Libya and was told, “You’d be lucky to even get members of your family to respond”. However, her Facebook survey reached 446,000 women.

The "Good Life 2030 Exhibition" was launched by advertising reformers, Purpose Disruptors at their Earth Day Advertising Summit on 25th April at the Tate Modern in London.
