On the former Roman Road, Durnovaria - Vindelis (Dorchester - Portland), Dorset. You can see Portland in the background. Always fascinating to travel on these ancient routes, and it is still doing its job nearly 2000 years later.

I would imagine the Vikings travelled along here on their way to have a punch up with the Saxons. It didn’t end too well - a grave of 50 beheaded Vikings was discovered 40 yards behind us when the by-pass was being built. You can see some of the skulls with swords cuts in the Dorchester Museum

Easter Break Available! Due to me not realising it was Easter Weekend (WHY can’t it be pinned down, it would be so much easier!), we have three nights available from Saturday 8th to Tuesday 11th. Someone might just like those three nights in lovely Dorset…spread the word please!

I’ve been rather slack at posting! Happy New Year to our guests old and new. All is well here in this beautiful corner of West Dorset, we enjoyed yesterday’s snowfall but have been less keen today on the skating rink roads!

As part of our relentless research into lovely places for our guests to visit, we spent the morning at Xtreme Falconry near Dorchester. We flew birds and watched a fantastic display, and learnt loads about birds of prey and their conservation. A really brilliant place to visit.

At the weekend some of our beautiful local gardens were open to the public. One was Slape Manor, very close by and the home of the original River Cottage. The grounds are being rewilded by the designers who controversially won at RHS Chelsea last week, and now we have beavers come to live locally too! Most of us who garden on a much smaller scale are just doing our bit to help the environment; not too much cutting back or tidying, no chemicals, bee friendly planting. It’s still a lot of hard work! The last picture is the view through our front door, taken from the kitchen where I collapse after a few more hours in the garden!

Happy Easter from Tiny, who beat the odds and is growing good and strong on five bottles a day! Obvs we are not having lamb for Easter Sunday lunch…

And just like after childbirth, right now all I can say is ‘NEVER AGAIN’. You can remind me of that…

I’ve said it before but it bears repeating; The Green Yard is tops in Bridport for HOT delicious coffee, DARK hot chocolate, and a fantastic menu. 👏🏻👍🥳

I usually post around now about the cute little lambs decorating our field. We’ve had some births but it’s all been a bit traumatic 😬. One ewe delivered FIVE babies, sadly dead. On the same night another threw three very small lambs. All this in Arctic temperatures. One of the triplets died, another was passed to the bereaved mum who is unable to feed her, but they have bonded. So the lamb is being bottle fed and comes into the house at night to make it easier and to prevent hypothermia, which it had on night one. So now we have a house lamb tiptoeing around on the wooden floor, at least we know where she is!
All this drama unfolded whilst Gray was laid up with Covid so our lovely Annex guests Simon and Debbie stepped in to help me 😍.
We’re waiting on a third ewe to deliver and she’s huuuuuge 🤞🏻.
As a friend said, never a dull moment!

We’ve found a new place to visit! The walled garden at Littke Bredy..an abandoned garden with greenhouses and hot beds, being reclaimed by volunteers. SO pretty. And a nice cream tea too.

Product - Furleigh Estate Contemporary still and sparkling Dorset wines with a Jurassic twist. All made in our own winery; cellar door sales and tours available.
