Online talk today (13th) at 4pm - Improving neurodivergent wellbeing: novel findings from clinical research - Dr Lisa Quadt and Dr Jessica Eccles.

Abstract: Neurodiversity describes a spectrum of neurological differences in humans, most often referring to neurodevelopmental conditions such as autism, ADHD, or Tourette syndrome. Neurodivergent individuals think, feel, sense, interact, and behave differently than the anticipated majority. However, contrary to persistent stereotypes, and similarly to neurotypical people, they present on a complex spectrum of (dis)ability, challenges, and strengths. There is now a robust research base indicating that neurodivergent individuals across the lifespan have worse physical and mental health outcomes, that their life expectancy is up to 30 years reduced, and that their needs are often unmet in healthcare, social care, educational, and social settings, with devastating effects on their wellbeing. Traditional research assumes and focuses on perceived behavioural, emotional, and neurological deficits in neurodivergent populations, with little attention to societal impacts and bodily mechanisms. However, three main aspects likely factor into the heightened vulnerability to psychosocial stress of neurodivergent individuals: (1) bodily mechanisms, such as altered autonomic nervous system function, (2) neurological differences in sensory and emotional processing, and (3) living in a world that is built for and favours the neurotypical majority. Identifying targets for intervention on all three levels is crucial for improving neurodivergent wellbeing. We will present novel clinical research that aims to enhance our understanding of neurodivergence and maps out research and clinical goals for better quality of life of neurodivergent people of all ages.

Everyone is very welcome to attend. We particularly welcome people with lived experience of mood and anxiety difficulties and their friends and family and clinicians and researchers with an interest in mood and anxiety difficulties.

HIV and Brain Health 22/07/2023

Our partners art Brighton and Sussex Medical School have made a short animation about cognitive impairment and looking after your cognitive health for people living with HIV. It’s being launched today for . The video is a collaboration between academics at the Brighton and Sussex Medical School, Brighton and Sussex LGBTQ+ Switchboard and people living with HIV who have cognitive issues.

It is part of an information provision initiative BSMS is developing in response to finding that many people living with HIV who have cognitive impairment are unsure of what it means, its causes and its prognosis which causes a lot of stress and anxiety. They’ve also found people living with HIV with and without cognitive issues are worried about their cognitive health but are unsure of how to support and maintain good cognition as they get older.

New from the University of Oxford, the FAST study will consider how changes in memory and thinking skills, or cognition, relate to changes that can be determined from blood samples. Before we start a study with a large number of people, we are performing this smaller study to understand how participants feel about the process. What we learn from this pilot study will be incorporated into the larger study.
