Where's your head?

Seriously, do you know where your head is in relation to the rest of your body? So many people are living with a head that is forward of their body and are unaware of it. They also don't realise the huge impact it could be having on the rest of their body.

It may be caused by leaning into a screen, driving a lot, being pulled forward by your dog, or a whole host of other reasons. Whatever the cause, it will almost definitely have had an effect on the ribcage, usually pushing it down. This, in turn, will affect the shoulders, the spine, the pelvis, and maybe even the feet.

Our body needs to be able to move through a full range of movement in 3 different planes (or directions), and habitual postures often mean a limitation and imbalance in one or more areas. These limitations can often cause movement restrictions, pain, and a sense of not feeling steady and safe when you walk.

What is fitness?

For so many people, when they hear the word fitness, they just think about working out, but it's so much more than that.

Fitness is about keeping your body healthy and strong. It includes regular exercise, balanced nutrition, and enough rest. Think of it as making sure your body can handle everyday activities with ease and energy.

Fitness isnโ€™t just about looking good; itโ€™s about feeling great and being able to do what you love without getting tired.

So, when you put it like that, how fit are you?

While alignment is a big focus of my work, I'm passionate about health and fitness too. Whether your misalignment is keeping you from optimal fitness or your lack of fitness is keeping you from optional alignment, they are linked and will have a huge effect on each other!

Are your feet holding even weight?

In each corner of the chart, we would ideally want to see 25%, but we very seldom do. I've been my own worst student recently, and it really shows in my foot pressure. You can see at the start of the video, nearly all of my weight is in my heels.

After just 20 minutes of simple movements, I was able to get much more weight into the front of my feet, especially the left one, going from 10% to 18%. That really is a huge difference! Now imagine I did those movements daily, I would have my weight even in no time.

It might not be your feet that are the issue, but they're usually a great place to start. As you can see, we can then use the whole body to realign the problem area or areas.

Hopefully, this video is a good guide as to how small adjustments can make a big difference in your body.

"Success is the sum of small efforts, repeated day in and day out."

This is so true, not only in life but also in restoring movement into our bodies.

When I start working with a client, I tell my them that I can't fix them. I can help them by observing them, finding misalignment, and then giving them practices/exercises to do to help restore optimal alignment. But then it's over to the client. They have the chance to heal themselves, and they do so by repeating small movements day in and day out.

In order to reverse postures we've held for years, it's not a case of one session, and you're back to optimal alignment. Just like anything that's worthwhile, you've got to put in some work. But it is so worth the effort! Once you feel movement start to restore itself and pain ease, you will know that your hard work has paid off and know that it was YOU who healed yourself.

Small efforts can make a huge difference, so why not have a go? Take your power back and see what you can achieve!

I thought today's calendar entry was so apt, I just had to share it!
Not only is it true for life, but describes the moment between each footstep, where you're going from one foot to the other, as a leap of faith. I'm absolutely loving learning the Anatomy in Motion courses, especially the Full Motion Model, where we look at the body from head to toe as you walk. The body is fascinating, and I just want to know more!

When goes upside down (ish) and tries to get flexi.

I don't get to play on my sling anywhere near as much as I'd like to, but I do love to get upside down when I can. It definitely leads to interesting faces and some odd looks at (not to mention the suspect camera angles), but I'm having fun, and that's all that matters to me.

Aerial is something I love, and I'm working on overlaying my posture and bio-mechanics training into Aerial moves to see if I can help aerialists increase their movement and flexibility. As far as I know, it's not something that's been done before, so it may take a while, but watch this space!

Are you someone who is prone to slouching?
Perhaps you sit at a computer, drive, or look at a screen a lot and tend to let your shoulders droop forward?

The photo shows shoulders that are slumped forward and a ribcage that is lowered, which is a common posture these days. While these are ranges of movement that your body needs to access, it's not ideal to be stuck there!

The person in the photo may well experience a lot of tightness in the shoulders, pain in the back and, as the head is upright and slightly forwards (as if looking at a screen), pain and tightness in the neck. They could also be getting headaches, shoulder issues, jaw pain, breathing difficulties, circulation problems, sciatica... the list goes on!

When we get stuck in different postures, whether that is slouching, a tiled pelvis, or a lean to one side, it has a huge impact throughout our whole body. Our body needs to be able to move through the full range of movement in 3 different planes (or directions), and habitual postures often mean a limitation in one or more areas. These limitations can often cause pain and chronic conditions.

When I first work with anyone, I start by getting a video of them walking so I can analyse their gait (literally the way they walk). I then chat this through with them and follow up with an assessment of their current posture, alignment, and movement limitations.

The next step is to move on to working together one to one (either online or in person) and also for my clients to join in an online Get Into Your Body course. It's during these sessions and the course that I help you to navigate your body so that you can learn what is going on in terms of your posture, and I give you tools to realign your own body.

Are you aware of how you stand and what your posture is doing to your body?

Do you have a tendency to lean forward at the waist, stretch your neck forward, or sway forward from the ankles?

Although this photo is exaggerated, any posture where you have more weight going through the front of your body than the back of your body, will be putting severe strain on almost all of your joints, and in turn the muscles that support them. This increases even more when we start moving!
If you have any sort of forward posture, it's not surprising to find you have neck pain, a sore lower back, tight calfs, flat feet, or any number of aches and pains.

Often, we aren't even aware of how we are standing or walking, let alone how that is showing up in our bodies. Having someone observe you and guide you back into alignment can make a huge difference to your pain conditions and your day to day life.

When people think of good posture they think of standing up tall with a pile of books on their head, shoulders pulled right back and chest raised high. Or being able to hold an abstract yoga position. Contrary to popular belief, this isn't actually good posture.

With posture and gait realignment we assess the body in it's resting position and while walking to see how you currently hold yourself and move. We then work with you to bring your body into optimal alignment through the gait cycle and while standing still, to ensure each bone, joint and muscle has the best range of movement available to it. We explore how your Centre of Mass influences your joints across various movement planes and guide you to find the full range of movement available in each area, so that your body can learn to find the optimal alignment itself.

We do this by making small adjustments within the body and letting your body explore movements and ranges it may have not done for a number of years. These are small, refined movements, which have a profound impact. Although it can be done in person, Posture and Gait Realignment is not a hands on process. It is not like massage or osteopathy, we are simply here to show you what your body has the potential to do and to help you learn it.

Wow, what great feedback from my client after their first session!

We went over the basics, how are they standing, sitting and walking, then made a few simple adjustments to realign their centre of mass. By the end of the session there was a noticeable difference, and through the week, they kept practising to ensure the changes were fully integrated into the body.

This is what I love, teaching people small changes they can make to make a big difference in their body and giving them back the power over their everyday experience.

What is YB Aligned?

For the past two years, I have been keeping a bit of a secret ๐Ÿคซ
I've been learning a new skill, and I'm finally ready to share it with the world!

I'm training to become a Posture and Gait Realignment practitioner.

What the heck is that? I hear you ask.

For a variety of reasons, we often stop using or limit the use of an area of our body. This, in turn, can throw out our whole alignment. Even a big toe that isn't moving optimally can have huge repercussions throughout the whole body!

When we are out of alignment, we often have chronic pain, health issues, and even a sense of disconnection from our daily lives and the world around us.

By analysing people's posture and gait, I can see what areas they have limitations in. We can then work together to get the whole body moving again, fluidly and comfortably, bringing you back into alignment.

I've already had the privilege of working with and teaching a number of people, and we've seen profound effects.
