By any yardstick, The Raving Beauties is one of modern pop’s more far-fetched projects. Circa 2014, Northern Irish writer/musician and adopted Brightonian Brian Bell was working on a collection of short stories, having written the Belfast/Brighton-set pulp fiction novel ‘Die Hard Mod’ (Pulp Press, 2010) under the pen-name Charlie McQuaker. One of Brian’s new tales, The Unsung Classic, told the story of an ill-fated band from the early ‘90s called The Raving Beauties whose music and image was heavily influenced by the American West Coast scene of late ‘60s. Having read the story at local spoken word events, Brian then came up with the idea of making an EP of what he imagined the fictional combo might have sounded like and releasing it as a ‘benign hoax’, purporting to be the unreleased recordings of a long-forgotten retro band. He managed to convince acclaimed Scottish singer/songwriter Gordon Grahame (Lucky Jim/Lost Soul Band) to collaborate on the project and when Brighton-based label At The Helm heard the resulting recordings, they were so enthused that they promised to release a full album if the duo could muster enough tunes of equal calibre. As their eponymous debut album began to take shape, it became evident that, by transcending their influences and taking on a life of their own, The Raving Beauties had outgrown their modest fictional beginnings and emerged as purveyors of timeless, euphoric pop in their own right. Following the amicable departure of Gordon Grahame, for the release of the Bap Kennedy tribute EP 'Raving for Bap' in 2017, the Raving Beauties became a collaboration between Brian and Oxford/Sussex band The Dreaming Spires, with multi-instrumentalist Joe Bennett (St Etienne, Co-pilgrim, Dreaming Spires) handling production duties. Fast forward to the present, Brian has been collaborating with producer Tom Collison (Americana Awards UK Instrumentalist of the Year) on a new Raving Beauties album ‘Over Yonder’ featuring a collective of like-minded musicians and due for release in 2023. A taster from the album, 'This is the Train', released in September '21, was playlisted by BBC Radio Ulster.
