Halloween today, and as the joy of sweets being gathered, costumes worn and trick or treating is in full swing, its perhaps worth taking a moment to remember the history that brought you that pointy hat. Sally Howard writing in the Guardian on 24 October wrote a thoughtful piece about the treatment of women labelled as witches - '' a brutal, three-century campaign that destroyed ancient female practices and means of income, from traditional midwifery to the ale business (once dominated by ale women, who wore pointed hats to signify their trade and kept cats to chase rodents away).
Howard also points out that modern-day ritualised killings of “witches” in India and around the world still continues today.

Very sad news reached me today, that, artist Sophia Hughes has died. My thoughts are with her friends and family. I have met with and happily talked with Sophia, and been proud to exhibit her wonderful art over the last 2 years. Having met Sophia at the West Bristol art trail in 2019, I immediately asked if I could show her work, and today, I was at the art trail again to collect a work from her at the Subud hall to display in Other Worlds are Possible. I have posted some snaps that I took of her exhibition there, including 100 images she created during lockdown.
Starting her artistic career as a sculptur, and switching seamlessly to visual art in 2011 after an accident involving her sculpture, her work was abstract and complex, Sophia said 'It starts with a feeling, a colour and a brush or palette knife, becomes an exploration into the unknown until the painting has its own authority, and then I live with it for a while, discovering what I have done.' Recently her restless curiosity led to her joyfully repainting and reworking paintings to stunning effect.

I will miss her

Rob
