Medical suction devices are critical for clearing blocked airways in an emergency and for those with a chronic lung condition. However, the commonly used electrical units do not always meet the needs of today’s medical professionals. Electrical units are not only limited in where they can be used, but are also inaccessible for hospitals in countries with poorer healthcare infrastructure. There is a clear need for affordable, portable, and easy-to-use alternatives.
One alternative is the Airway Medical Suction Unit, or AMSU, developed by oxygen therapy specialist Simon Hall and his team at Airway Medical. The AMSU requires no electricity, allowing for it to be used in environments lacking power. With eight of the device’s 11 components made from plant-based biopolymers, the AMSU is a highly sustainable alternative, and is the first suction device of its class to be made from plant materials.
With support from the Sustainable Innovation Fund, Airway Medical was able to engage with academics for essential research, design the bespoke elements of the unit, and produce soft injection moulding prototypes to test the design in clinical trials.

It's the last day, and what a week it's been! I'm not sure we've ever been as linked globally by a healthcare issue as we are at the moment, and the best and the brightest have definitely come out in force to fight -19 whilst maintaining the pace of advancement around other wellbeing issues.
