A noisy boiler should never be ignored. As with any piece of equipment, things can go wrong from time to time.

The combi boiler. Workhorse of many homes in the UK.

Combi is short for combination boiler; basically it is a combination of a water heater and central heating boiler in one compact unit.

They heat water directly from the mains when you turn on a tap. No requirement for a hot water storage cylinder or a cold water storage tank.

Pros:

💧Efficiency. Combi boilers are less likely to malfunction and are far more energy efficient.

💧Cheaper. They are far less complex than traditional heating systems, which means that installations tend to be cheaper.

💧Speed. Instant unlimited supply of hot water on demand.

💧Size. They take up less space than regular and system boilers. Ideal for flats and homes that have limited room.

Cons:

💧Dependence on mains pressure. To ensure that your combi boiler is working properly, you need good mains pressure.

💧Limitations. If you live in a large house, with a number of bathrooms and en suites, or with lots of people you will struggle to run baths, showers, taps at the same time.

💧Breakdown. In the event of a fault, you will be left without hot water as well as central heating.

💧Power shower. Since they’re designed to be installed to low-pressure water supplies, it means they are unsuitable for combi boilers.

Do you have a high demand for hot water, but little space in the loft? Then a system boiler could be for you! They are a "traditional" heating system and commonly found in older properties.

System boilers still require a hot water cylinder to store the heated water, but do not require a cold water tank in the loft as these boilers are fed direct from the mains.

Pros:
💧 The water pressure is higher coming out of taps as it is mains fed.
💧 Instant hot water.
💧 Ease of installation and economical.
💧 Ideal for homes with more than one bathroom.

Cons:
💧 Once the hot water runs out in the storage tank, that is it until the boiler heats up more water which can take up to 30 minutes.
💧 Takes up space

Do you have a large tank of cold water in the loft and a hot water cylinder in your airing cupboard. Then you have a regular boiler system. These are the oldest type of system out there, but it does not mean they have had their day.

Pros:
💧 There are two or more bathrooms, or a demand for lots of water and heat, so someone with a large house.
💧 A good option in areas where water pressure is low or the house is old and the existing pipework may not be able to cope with a high water pressure.
💧 Compatible with solar water heating systems for a lower carbon footprint and lower energy costs

Cons:
💧 They take up a lot of space
💧 Once the water in the hot water storage tank is used, you have to wait for it to refill and reheat.

If your regular boiler system is quite old, it is worth upgrading as modern regular boilers systems are far more efficient these days.

Do you have a carbon monoxide alarm?

All homes that have a fuel burning appliance, such as gas powered boilers, heaters, ovens, stoves and open fire places, should have at least one.

So pretty much everyone then!

You can’t see, taste or smell it, and some symptoms mimic the effects of viruses and even a bad hangover.

It’s important to know the physical symptoms of CO poisoning to ensure you seek help quickly

If you suspect a case of CO poisoning:

▶️Get fresh air, open doors and windows.
▶️Turn off gas appliances and leave the house.

Should you DIY with gas?

No.

All gas work carried out in your home should always be carried out by a Gas Safe Registered engineer.

🔥Installing, repairing or servicing a gas boiler.
🔥Installing or repairing a gas fire, gas cooker or gas hob.

If you have the need for lots of heat and hot water and have a home with a loft or with adequate storage, then a conventional boiler with a storage tank to supply hot water is for you.

If you have the need for lots of heat and hot water at the same time, but don't have a loft for a storage tank then a system boiler could be a better option.

If your demand for lots of hot water and heat at the same time is relatively low and space is limited, a combi boiler is the way to go.
