Genre-defying composer/percussionist Sarathy Korwar is one of the exciting artists lined up for the Southbank Centre’s inaugural South Asian Sounds festival and is my special guest on this week’s A World in London. We’ve met at various gigs since lockdown, for Pulse, Dialled In, and Daytimers UK, but it’s through this radio interview that I’ve learnt much more about the stories and inspirations behind Sarathy’s music. Raised in India on a diet of geology, Jazz, and Jimi Hendrix, Sarathy has forged a formidable presence on London’s music scene and beyond, signing to cool labels like Leaf and Coldcut’s Ninja Tune, touring solo and with Anoushka Shankar globally, and making musical waves with urban jazz, spoken word artists, and rarely heard Siddi folk musicians! Hear Sarathy’s candid interview, plus an exclusive preview of his forthcoming EP, ‘Kalak:Live in Mumbai’, on Resonance 104.4fm, Wednesday 28th February at 6.30pm, or anytime worldwide at Mixcloud/DJRitu. Catch Sarathy live on stage at Queen Elizabeth Hall on Sunday March 10th with his fellow trio talents, Tamar Osborn and Al MacSween, at Queen Elizabeth Hall on Sunday March 10th for two concerts. Sarathy Korwar will perform with his band and also a featured collaboration New Soundz with beatboxing star Jason Singh who also features in this exciting double bill presented by the Asian Arts Agency. Sarathy and Jason will both present concerts of their own and come together for an exciting South Asian Sounds finale concert, New Soundz. They are preceded by another Asian Arts Agency star performer, the King of Bhangra, Malkit Singh, on March 8th at Royal Festival Hall, London.
