Avon Archaeology Ltd
Commercial Archaeological Consulting and Contracting Unit
We are a commercial archaeological consulting and contracting unit based in Bristol providing a wide range of archaeological services to the construction and development industries. Avon Archaeology Ltd began in April 2013 as a direct continuation of Avon Archaeological Unit which was originally founded in 1992.
Good job we dealt with the archaeology in Trench 28.
Come join us this Saturday as we support this year's Bristol's Brilliant Archaeology at Blaise Castle museum. The event is free, with loads of things to do and see!
16/09/23 11am to 4pm
Hard to imagine, but the walls below were built as part of an 18th -19th century hot house complex, the primary purpose of which was growing pineapples.
The section demonstrates the level of landscaping that went on, an entirely made bank.
Seems a huge effort for a very low yield crop, until you discover that pineapples were, for a time, worth nearly the value of a small house!
Lastly, some slurry, because this is archaeology 😄

! Here are a few decorated floor tiles found during our recent community archaeology project at Evesham, Abbey Evesham Abbey Trust
The remains of Evesham Abbey Church are located within an area that has, for several hundred years been used as gardens and for allotment gardening. Much of the site of the Abbey Church was excavated, recorded and backfilled by Edward Rudge between 1811 and 1834. Then in 1881, the Vicar of St Lawrence Church, F. W. Holland re-excavated the partial remains of the north-west pier of the Abbey Church Tower. The north-west pier was left exposed for viewing, however years of neglect led to the remains becoming engulfed with vegetation, a build-up of soil and rubbish.
The recent community archaeological project re-exposed the remains of the north-west pier and re-excavated a section of rubble wall in the location of the west end of the Abbey Church.
Very few artefacts of note were recovered during the excavation work – not overly surprising as the ground had been excavated before. However, numerous fragments of floor tile were recovered, and though most were in a fairly poor condition, a few decorated examples were found.
If you missed the tours during our Community Archaeology week, you will be excited by this little announcement....
As part of the Evesham Medieval Market Weekend (21st - 22nd May 2022) you can have a guided walk and tour of the excavation site. Tours are on Saturday and Sunday 12pm and 3pm. Meet at the Evesham Abbey Trust Gazebo (just inside the Cloister Arch!)

Here is Andrew Armstrong, Gloucester City Archaeologist talking about the Roman Stones we recovered from Southgate Street a couple of years ago.
Today was spent in the sunshine carrying out a survey of standing remains of Evesham Abbey. It was more than a little hot out there, but such a beautiful place to work.
We have been working for sometime now with Evesham Abbey Trust in their bid to restore and repair the the Grade II listed at risk walls and provide a community garden which reflects and interprets the story of the Abbey and the history of Evesham.

2021 marks the bicentenary of the ex*****on of John Horwood of Hanham. At only 18 years old, he was the first person to be executed from the gallows on the gates of Bristol New Gaol.
Horwood had been convicted of the murder of Eliza Balsum, his former sweetheart.
Dr Richard Smith, the surgeon who attended Eliza at the Bristol Royal Infirmary, became witness for the prosecution. He dissected Horwood’s body post-mortem in front of a public audience, and had Horwood’s skin dressed and tanned to bind his case papers. Embossed with the actual skin of John Horwood and skull and cross-bone motifs, the book is now on display at M Shed.
In our free online talk on Thursday 15 April, Dr Rose Wallis will explore the contents of the 'book of skin'. It sheds light on the operation of the law in the 1820s, and contemporary attempts to understand criminality.
We can find intimate details about life for young people in the early nineteenth-century, and an insight into Horwood the person, beyond the criminal co**se, or indeed the 'book of skin'.
Speaker: Dr Rose Wallis is a Senior Lecturer in British Social History at UWE Bristol and, and Associate Director of the Regional History Centre.
This is a UWE Regional History Centre talk in partnership with M Shed seminar series.
This free, online talk will be held over Zoom. Please book your place here: https://www.bristolmuseums.org.uk/m-shed/whats-on/reading-the-book-of-skin-life-and-death-of-john-horwood/
It is a beautiful church to visit. We enjoyed the archaeological work associated with the restoration which was completed in 2019.
