Ok, so I posted a very simple request for information update regarding the return of choir rehearsals earlier in the week.
I DID receive a mixed bag of responses but thank you to the few who kept to the point.
Unfortunately, as we all know, amateur choirs are not worth the risk. Let's stop the awful 'hobby singers' rant. As an experienced voice specialist I fully appreciate the 'science' of bioaerosols but also know that singing is a very important activity for thousands of people - amateurs - and, at the the very least, encouraging positive mental health.
Pubs, beaches, schools and shopping malls are packed. Why should choirs be the scapegoat?
Let's stop being so conformist and let the members of our community make the decision. Our hugely vital contribution to the culture of this country is being controlled through irrational fear and bias. No doubt responses will include data on social distancing but whilst pubs, beaches, shopping malls ....and schools are exempt the dampening of the great choral tradition is unfair to say the least.
Auditions for tenor, bass and soprano voices WB Monday 3rd August.
To all my students, thank you!
Doing my best to keep teaching on Skype. Also offering music theory and GCSE/A level composition tuition.
I took a choir rehearsal tonight. I gave everyone the opportunity to decide if they wanted to attend. My best wishes go to those who did not for their own reasons and I look forward to seeing you soon. Out of 35 8 attended. It was terrific. As far as we know not one but of us is infected. But they made their own choice. They all said how much better they felt for singing, for getting out, for feeling as if they were living.
We are entering dark times where everything stops. We may not meet next week but, whatever happens, I was glad to spend that hour with eight guys who raged against the dying of the light.
