Back in 2011-2013 Project Pride involved young people from Nelson working with artist Karen Alderson to research what was special about their area and to creatively tell the story of what they found. Suffragist pioneer Selina Cooper was the focus for some of that activity and a dress was created celebrating her achievements and their community. This week the dress has gone to a new home at Unity Hall in Nelson, so do make sure to look out for it if you visit.

Benjamin Ingham was born on this day in 1712. This Nonconformist founded the Inghamite Brotherhood, and preached the first sermon in a church of his own denomination on Christmas Day 1750. Inghamite churches proliferated for a while, but this first Inghamite church to be built is now the last to survive and is on the . The church, and , was featured in a Songs of Praise episode in 2021. Find out more about the Trail and Ingham on our website: https://www.pendleradicals.org.uk/pendle-radicals/benjamin-ingham/

Closing date is this Friday. We’re very excited by this as it will have its first outing at Burnley Canal Festival. We can’t wait to see the outcome!

The British Textile Biennial and Showtown, Blackpool are looking for a creative to design and build a mobile pop up exhibition structure to house and tour a collection of photographs and postcards of Blackpool Wakes Week from 1900-1939. It is planned to take the pop up exhibition to family festivals, events and care homes across Lancashire.

Through touring the exhibition, British Textile Biennial will gather oral histories from the people who have lived and remembered experience of Wakes Weeks, to build into an online archive and exhibition to be hosted as part of the www.lancashiretextilegallery.com website.

We hope the exhibition design will respond to/reference the visual imagery of Victorian seaside and/or Lancashire mills and evoke the vibrancy and excitement of Wakes Weeks.

🗓️ Application deadline: Friday 7th June

Budget: £5,000 which must cover fees, expenses, materials and delivery.

Full brief, resources and application process can be found on our website at https://britishtextilebiennial.co.uk/news/open-call-wakes-week-pop-up-mobile-exhibition-stand/ 🔗

A fantastic turnout for yesterday’s Radical Walk, and there’s another this coming Sunday (and the weather is looking hopeful for that one too). The Chartist walk is a great stretch of the legs in beautiful countryside with a fascinating slice of history included. Come and join us.!

And this Saturday 8th June it is time for our annual Pendle Chartists' Walk. Remembering the Sabden Chartists' summer camps on a spur of Pendle Hill. All free and no need to book. A unique slice of radical northern history in the form of a walk. Expect flags and rousing seditious speeches on a hilltop as we gather around Pendle's Chartist's Well - still marked on OS maps but tricky to find. England Awake!

CLR James died on this day in 1989. This extraordinary, radical polymath only lived in Nelson for a year, but would later say that his time in Pendle had more influence on his work than all his time in Bloomsbury. Read more about this on our website.

Looks like the weather will be kind for this Sunday's organised by the National Clarion Cycling Club and the Friends of Clarion House. This annual Whit Walk to Clarion House for a brew and picnic. This unique guided walk links two Workers' Assembly Halls recorded on UNESCO's world heritage map - Unity Hall, Vernon Street in Nelson and the Clarion House at Roughlee. Retrace a traditional route taken by Nelson weavers on their Sundays off to the ILP's refreshment room over the hill in the unspoilt countryside below Pendle Hill.
On Sunday 2nd June it will leave Unity Hall (postcode is BB9 9DE) at 10:30am but arrive around 10:00am for a look around the historic Independent Labour Party building and a brew! Our walk route is approximately 3 miles to the Clarion House so bring some lunch - refreshments are available at the tea bar. We will return to Nelson a different way. The route is approximately 6 miles in total, to be undertaken at an easy to moderate pace. The walk is family friendly but there are some gradients and stiles (so not suitable for buggies). No need to book on this walk and it is a FREE event though donations are always welcome! Supported by Mid Pennine Arts project.
Please note there are public transport options for this walk - Nelson has a train station on the Blackburn-Colne line.

Our Story

Mid Pennine Arts brings art, people and places together. We commission ambitious, original work that is unique to some very special places and connects directly with people. Our projects interrogate and celebrate what is unique about our area, our heritage and our communities.

Mid Pennine Arts’ projects challenge artists, enrich our communities and sometimes change lives.

MPA is the commissioning agency based in Pennine Lancashire and developing projects across Lancashire and beyond. We commission high quality creative work through a variety of collaborations and in response to the distinctive contexts of our natural, built and social environments. Our projects examine what is unique about our area, our heritage and our communities. We aim to originate exciting creative work that has lasting impact for participants, audiences and our project partners. We believe in the transformative power of contemporary art. We work in some of the poorest communities in the UK, but we deliver ambitious, challenging work that has won national and international awards and achieves profound and lasting social and economic outcomes. Our local context is all important, informing new work that brings new life and new audiences to magical heritage sites and struggling high streets alike. From ancient manors to obsolete railways, from derelict mills to windswept moorland, Mid Pennine Arts applies that transformative power to the living heritage of our region, giving national and international artists the opportunity to work within one of the most exciting contexts in Europe. With five decades of commissioning experience, MPA’s longevity is testament to the soundness of our vision and the integrity of a philosophy rooted in the belief that art can play a major role in developing, nurturing and completing sustainable communities.

Mid Pennine Arts is a social enterprise, a not for profit company limited by guarantee and a registered charity.
