Very sad true facts. 🙏

‼ #1 SUNBEDS ARE SAFE:
Sunbed use is bad news at any age and dramatically increases the risk of both melanoma and non-melanoma skin cancer. They are classified as a group 1 carcinogen - the highest cancer risk category. AND the younger you are and more often you use them - the risk MASSIVELY INCREASES.

‼ #2 SUNBEDS ARE SAFER THAN THE SUN:
Sunbeds emit UVA at much higher intensities than the sun to make you tan quickly. UVA pe*****tes the skin at much deeper levels than UVB. Damage from UVA is cumulative, irreparable, causes cell damage and skin cancer - including melanoma which is one of the biggest killing cancers in the 15-34 age group.

‼ #3 SUNBEDS HELP PREPARE MY SKIN FOR THE SUN SO I DON’T BURN:
This is a common misconception, but put simply, all it does is add to the damage already done and if you intend to sunbathe, further damage you will do.

‼ #4 SUNBEDS BOOST MY VITAMIN D SUPPLY
UVB boosts vitamin D, NOT UVA. Any deficiencies, particularly in winter should be boosted with supplements and a healthy balanced diet.

‼ #5 A SUNBED TAN MAKES ME LOOK BETTER!
UVA is responsible for 80% of the visible signs of ageing - and as mentioned sunbeds emit much higher intensities of UVA than natural sunlight. The fact is, sunbed use will make you look MUCH older at a MUCH younger age.

‼ DON’T FORGET! Sunbeds are BANNED in some countries - they are illegal for use in the UK if you are under the age of 18 and MUCH MORE needs to be done to regulate this industry.

‼ DON’T BECOME A STATISTIC.
Many sunbed users have died from melanoma - this is not a coincidence.

‼ Please, if you use sunbeds STOP ‼

If 1 in 5 will be diagnosed with skin cancer in the UK and 90% of cases are preventable - doesn’t it seem ludicrous that the estimated annual burden on the NHS is £500 million!

It’s not rocket science! Education is key to combatting the disease and saving lives.

If only government would provide an ounce of help toward the level of educational intervention required to combat this largely preventable disease - the amount of pounds it would save would help relieve a significant burden on our NHS...

Instead, it’s left to charities who have lost a loved one to step up and take action! And, 18 years on, despite lobbying for action over many years SKCIN remain committed to this cause through the delivery of bespoke, targeted, national solutions that are making a massive impact and saving lives.

Our well established resources and accreditation programmes support the nation's most at-risk and influential sectors to promote the prevention and early detection of both melanoma and non-melanoma skin cancer across the UK and beyond:

📣‼ Breaking News: Lib Dems call for scrapping of VAT on high-factor sunscreen as their FOI request reveals many skin cancer patients are waiting close to a year to start treatment. We have several radio interviews today on this subject!

• Freedom of Information Act (FOI) requests from the Liberal Democrats show a 25% increase in patients on waiting lists for skin cancer treatment
• Around 3,500 patients are waiting longer than the 62-day standard to start treatment with some left waiting almost a year
• Lib Dem Health spokesperson Daisy Cooper MP calls the state of cancer services “shocking and tragic” and calls for VAT on high-factor sunscreen to be scrapped

SKCIN have been proactively campaigning for this for the last two years alongside fellow charities and former MP Amy Callaghan.

Back in January of this year, well ahead of the suspected general election, SKCIN also wrote to 13 party leads and health ministers, (including Lib Dems Ed Davey and Health spokesperson, Daisy Cooper) urging them to support our calls, but we were sadly not even afforded a response!!!

High factor Sunscreen is an essential health item and making it more affordable is an extremely positive step in aiding the prevention of skin cancer.

However, SKCIN believe greater public awareness and education is vital and that government MUST take dual approach to reduced taxation and education (proven to work in Australia where the reduction of skin cancer cases is globally recognised as one of their greatest health achievements).

Sadly the agonising waiting times endured by many skin cancer patients has existed for decades and as predicted is worsening year-on-year due to:

• The lack of full time dermatologists in the UK
• The lack of training, workforce planning, personnel and resourcing
• The sheer volume of skin cancer cases
• Rapidly increasing rates of skin cancer

🙏 Let’s hope our new government listen to the increasing support for these calls and take appropriate action to combat this major public health concern!

Let's dive into the world of cleansers 🫧

As the foundation of your skincare routine, choosing the right one is crucial. Consider your skin type and seasonal needs to find a cleanser that will leave your skin feeling refreshed and balanced all year round.

🌸 Ultra-sensitive skin – Ultra Soothing Cleanser is rich and creamy with oatmeal and no essential oils or fragrance.

🌸 Dry, ageing or sensitive skin – Soothing Cleanser has a sheer texture and contains cucumber to cool and soothe.

🌸 Normal or combination skin – Balancing Cleanser is a light soya-based cleanser to harmonise skin.

🌸 Oily, congested or breakout prone skin – Purifying Wash is a foaming gel formula and contains Tea Tree and Lemongrass to leave skin super clean.

🌸 Congested and full-face breakout skin – Clarifying Skin Wash is a highly active, advanced formulation to defend against severe breakouts.

🌸 Ageing and mature skin – Dynamic Resurfacing Cleanser helps to resurface the skin and reduce wrinkles and hyperpigmentation.

For more advice on the right skin care for your skin, pop into Halcyon Days Skincare and see our Eve Taylor therapist who is highly trained to advise on what will work best for you.

So sad, I wish I hadn’t used them when I was younger too!

Sadly, way too many lives have been lost to sunbed use. They are classified by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) as a Group 1 carcinogen - this is its highest cancer risk category. Furthermore, a review by IARC found that first exposure to sunbeds before the age of 35 years increases the risk of melanoma by an alarming 75 per cent and if used before the age of 30 the risk is further increased.

Many a true word!
Give me a rub in tan from a bottle any day 😀

‼ No matter what skin type you have - when it comes to UV radiation, there’s no such thing as a safe tan!

Tan seekers are at greater risk of skin cancer. Even if your skin tans rather than burns, the simple fact that your skin has changed colour is a sign of damage. It’s a warning sign that should act as a serious reminder that once the tan fades, the damage remains. Damage from UV is cumulative, irreparable and the direct cause of 90% of the world’s most common cancer!

☀ What are the differences between UVA and UVB radiation?

☀ UVA Radiation:

UVA accounts for up to 95% of the sun’s radiation that reaches the earth’s surface.

UVA can pe*****te (pass through) cloud cover and most glass and plastic.

UVA remains at more-or-less consistent levels during daylight hours, all year round.

UVA radiation is responsible for tanning of the skin.

UVA is responsible for around 80% of the visible signs of ageing.

UVA pe*****tes the middle layer of the skin called the dermis.

☀ UVB Radiation:

UVB accounts for only 5% of the sun’s radiation reaching the earth’s surface.

UVB cannot pe*****te glass, plastic or other materials.

UVB levels increase with altitude, proximity to the equator, during the spring and summer months and during each day from April to September, generally peaking between 11am and 3pm.

UVB is responsible for burning of the skin which is strongly linked to the development of melanoma.

UVB (in very small amounts) helps the body produce Vitamin D3.

UVB pe*****tes the outer layer of the skin called the epidermis.

☀ What do UVA and UVB have in common?

Damage from both UVA and UVB is cumulative and irreparable. Both cause damage to the skins cells, which over time can cause the cells to mutate, grow out-of-control and form malignant tumours known as skin cancer.

UVA and UVB are responsible for 90% of skin cancers, which collectively form the most commonly diagnosed cancer in the UK and worldwide.

In the spring and summer months UVA and UVB pose a combined threat.

Turning any kind of red or brown through exposure to UVA and UVB is a visual warning sign of sun damage and is you’re skin’s way of alerting you that damage is occurring beneath the skin’s surface!

Protection against UVA and UVB is vital for skin health:

Cover up with clothing a hat & sunglasses, seek shade and apply SPF30+ sunscreen with UVA protection liberally and evenly, at least every 2 hours!

Prevention is better than cure!

So interesting

‼ Since 1973, death rates from melanoma (the most serious type of skin cancer) have risen by 219% in men, compared to an increase of 76% in women and statistics reveal that men are 69% more likely to die from the disease!

Despite the fact that 1 in 4 men in the UK will develop a form of skin cancer in their lifetime, men are less likely to cover up with clothing & wear sunscreen, check their skin for signs of change or visit their GP with any concerns.

For all the advice, guidance and self-management tools you need to reduce your risk of skin cancer and detect the early warning signs - install the Skcin App on your mobile device:

Very important to put on your SPF 30+ daily.
Our Eve Taylor London products offer a broad spectrum of UVA and UVB

‼ The boom in cosmetic products using SPF claims as a unique selling
point is hugely misleading and placing consumers at risk!

Common misconceptions surround application and the level of
protection actually afforded by products making such claims.

This is fueled by lack of regulation, transparency and education - lulling consumers into a dangerous false sense of security.

Unless the PRIMARY FUNCTION of the product is to protect the skin from UVA and UVB damage, then it simply cannot be relied upon to provide adequate protection!

Consumers are highly unlikely to apply the amount of moisturiser or foundation for example for the product to provide the level of SPF protection it claims. And of course, reapply that amount every two hours!

Such products may form some protection against small amounts of incidental sun exposure, albeit for a short time - but due to lack of transparency, instruction and education, consumers are being mislead by these claims which is putting them at risk of sun damage and skin cancer.

Applying a high-factor (SPF 30+), broad-spectrum (also protects against UVA) sunscreen should form part of your DAILY skin care rountine, and if outdoors for longer periods it should be reapplied at least every two hours to maintain efficacy.

If you could see the damage you’ve already done due to UV exposure, would it change your sun protection habits? Would you check your skin monthly for the early warning signs?

This image is taken with a special UV camera that show’s UV damage to the skin on one side of the face that’s invisible to the naked eye.

Ever been: a tan seeker? sunbed user? had sun burn in childhood or adolescence? outdoor worker?

There are lots of reasons that place us at higher risk of skin cancer - but considering that 90% of skin cancers are caused by over-exposure to UV - the fact is, for most adults, the damage is already done.

It’s imperative to check your skin for signs of change every month and seek immediate professional assessment with any mole or lesion that’s new, unusual or changing!
