Congratulations to our friends Duncan and Sarah on their handfasting ceremony at the Spiral Mound in Buxton's Pavilion Gardens today. Beautifully officiated by High Priestesses Barbara Meiklejohn-Free & Flavia Kate Peters of Arnemetia's The Purple Shop. Thanks for inviting me along. It was a genuinely touching experience.

Available in store: The History of Four Iconic Buxton Shops, the latest publication by local historian Julian Cohen. Tracing the history from the 1870s of Potters, Hargreaves, Cloves & Son, and Goddards Music Shop, Julian explores the shifts in Buxton's social history throughout the twentieth century. Anybody familiar with Julian's other books, Surely Not in Buxton! and Buxton Pubs, as well as his volunteer work with the Buxton Civic Association, will know already that his latest book will be a mine of information for anyone interested in the area. Each book is priced at £10, and available to browse on our counter.
Now Halloween is over, our window display has magically shed itself of creepy crawlies and candles to make room for spider plants, new books and, well, a touch of horror and fantasy (as is our wont). The handmade pumpkins, in keeping with the autumn months, are also staying. And we'll be keeping our doors open all week, including Sunday from 10 til 4, to make sure your kiddies aren't short of something to read this half-term.
The Company of Wolves (dir. Neil Jordan, 1984)
Adapted by Angela Carter from stories included in her classic collection The Bloody Chamber, The Company of Wolves captures the psycho-sexual tone of the book perfectly amidst some beautifully realised and fantastical imagery. A literal fever dream serves as the foundation Carter and co-screenwriter/director Neil Jordan build on to weave tales within tales that transcend common folklore and fairytales to explore sexual awakening and the seductive power of oral storytelling. Impressively shot and designed on a tight budget with great practical effects by Christopher Tucker and an assured central performance by a teenaged Sarah Patterson, it became an instant cult favourite due to its experimental approach to structure and a cast of dependable British talent such as Stephen Rea, Brian Glover and Terence Stamp appearing in small roles. Angela Lansbury as the wise but doomed Granny is a treat.
To see me through Halloween, I'll be reading 'Midnight Dreary: The Mysterious Death of Edgar Allan Poe' by John Evangelist Walsh, and 'Selected Tales' by the master himself. Whatever you're reading, whoever you're tricking, and wherever your journey takes you, stay safe.
Thanks to Scrivener's Books for 'Midnight Dreary' and our own shelves for 'Selected Tales'.
