A massive thank you to Wellcome Sanger Institute. Nine lovely people from Sanger came to our Abington site and spent the day, clearing the garden, dismantling the bottle greenhouse and painting planters - ready for our customers to start growing vegetable. They did a fantastic job and the site looks so much better. They also had a great time interacting with our customers who provided lunch. Thank you Sanger for all your help.

Last week customers from Abington Day Opportunities enjoyed a BBQ and games day. Customer, Chris was our resident DJ, playing everyone's favourite tracks. The food was enjoyed by our customers and the games which included cricket and basketball went late into the afternoon. It was a great day and everyone had a brilliant time.

OWL Bikes has been shortlisted for the Cambridge Independent Business Awards under their social enterprise category, here’s why…

18 year old Amy came to Routeways to Work to gain new skills and work experience. She felt her ability to work was impacted by her Global Development Delay. She was at college but wanted to find paid work to support herself financially.

Our Employment and Wellbeing Advisor supported Amy to create a CV and prepare for interviews. They practised interview techniques, studying questions and exploring positive answers. We also arranged mock interviews for her.

Amy’s confidence grew visibly during the preparation and the interview experience brought her a sense of relief and accomplishment. Empowered by the mock interview, Amy successfully applied for and secured her first paid job.

Amy told us “When I went for my real job interview, I felt prepared by knowing what to say and answer questions. I got the real job so thank you.”

The awards ceremony takes place on Thursday 26 September so stay tuned for more updates.

Every Thursday our Basildon centres hold a ‘presentations’ session. Customers are learning all different kinds of skills on the computer, they then put these skills to good use and produce a presentation on a topic of their choice. They then have the opportunity to present this to their peers, it is great for their confidence and getting used to public speaking.

Recently, they had Sue and Eliane both complete their presentations. Eliane chose her favourite singer Michael Jackson and Sue chose to do a presentation on her recent break to respite.

They both did a fantastic presentation and had everyone engaged. Shout out to Billie and Ethan for supporting them through the session!

After an amazing turn out last year, our Basildon centre decided to have another staff day!

They had a naming ceremony for a lovely hand made teddy which was donated to us by Fords. Billie, our Expert by Experience, won the competition with the beautiful name Harmony.

They had the Ladybirds Song Group come and put on a fantastic performance! Both staff, customers and parents enjoyed a singalong and a dance.

Maggie did a lovely speech, thanking the staff for all their hard work throughout the year.

PCS Legal came for a visit after already passing their target of a donations of £10,000, they were presented with the Highly Commended Corporate Partner of the Year Award, for the Chartered Institute of Fundraising East Anglia Regional Awards.

Then, as the day started to wind down customers decided they would like to finish the day with some karaoke!

Every summer, our Abington centre takes a week off from regular sessions, and each Activities Facilitator creates a special day. This Friday, Graham hosted a fun summer beach day with a special guest—Pebbles! Pebbles, from a local riding yard in Barley, is part of a new petting and therapy business. Our customers absolutely loved the visit! 🐴🌞

Papworth Trust’s Disability Confident Advisor, Fleur, attended Cambridgeshire Chambers of Commerce Round Table networking event at Grafham Water. The event focused on the importance of wellbeing and recovery to help support employees to sustain themselves in the workplace, with an informative presentation from Boutros Bear: Chronic Illness Rehabilitation delivered by Sheila Kissane-Marshall.

Later, in the interests of keeping active, the delegates participated in their chosen activity of archery or paddle boarding in the idyllic setting of Grafham Water. The Disability Confident scheme is playing a vital role in supporting employers to become more informed of what small changes they can make to improve the mental and physical health of their employees. Please contact [email protected] for an informal chat on how she can support your organisation with training or to become .

On Tuesday, our Cambridge cooking/baking group had a great time! They hit the supermarket on Monday to grab ingredients, then came together to measure, mix, and create something delicious. The result? A fun mashup between a jam tart and a Jaffa Cake!

Customers in Basildon Day Opportunities have completed a 4 week Bikeability course, which was very successful – the customers made huge progress throughout the course and most importantly they had a lot of fun. At the end of the course they had a presentation to celebrate their achievements. Elaine, Lee-Anne and Emily make huge progress over the 4 weeks; Rachel, Jade and Billie were successful in completing their level 1, and were given a surprise of being awarded a lovely new bike each to take home as well as safety equipment which included a new helmet, lights, a bike lock and hi-vis clothing. A massive thank you to Lydia from Pedal Power for making this happen.

We were very proud of our 9 runners in London’s Big Half on Sunday who completed 13.1 miles on a hot day to raise money for Papworth Trust. 6 were from our corporate partner, PCS Legal, who raised around £3000 between them. 2 staff members, Nikki and Neil, plus Katrina (a friend of the Trust) made up the remainder of the team. It was an amazing effort by all of them as we know how much training goes on beforehand. A big thank you and 3 cheers from all our customers, staff and volunteers.🙌

Customers in Huntingdon Day Opportunities made these delicious Victoria sponge cupcakes in baking this week. They carefully worked out how many cakes they would make, measured the ingredients and worked hard whisking up the cream! They then kindly shared their cakes with all the other customers who were so happy to have a yummy treat after working up a sweat in their chair- based Zumba session! 🍥👨🏼‍🍳🥄💃🏼
