This year there has been a big focus on improving on the level of support each client gets.

When someone is in good shape all it means is they found something that worked for them and stuck with it.
It doesnโt mean the same advice will work for you.
Your starting point, lifestyle and mentality are all completely different and need to be considered when setting out a plan.
Iโll give you an exampleโฆ
If I want to get lean I can quite happily for 8 weeks eat nothing but protein cookies, yoghurt, chicken breast and veggies.
Sometimes eating chicken breast for breakfast to keep the calories low.
Iโll also say no to any social events that will have drinking or eating involved and be doing 15,000+ a day without fail.
This is in no way saying โoh look way I can doโ.
I just live a life where itโs easy for me to do this.
My friends know if Iโm doing this to leave me be and the way I work means I can go for walks, eat and train exactly when I want to.
Now if I tell most of you to do that thereโs no chance of it happening.
You have busy work days, you have social events, thereโs things you canโt say no to and above all else you probably donโt want to ๐.
The advice you get needs to be applicable to you and your lifestyle.

We are in the first week of December๐
Youโre probably starting to have work socials, friends socials, holiday shopping and random meet ups.
All this can make sticking to your usual training regime incredibly difficult.
There may be the temptation to decide to give it up for the month and start again properly in January.

No matter what your favourite influencer is telling you thereโs no exercises you have to do.
Thereโs no 1 exercise youโre not doing thatโs stopping you from seeing results.
The only time you have to do a certain exercise is if your goal is to get better and stronger at that specific movement.
Youโll see people doing barbell bench press, deadlifts and back squats because they think they have to do them to grow with no regard as to whether they can do them.
A lot of barbell movements are skill based meaning you donโt have to be hugely muscular to lift a massive weight, itโs the whole premise of powerlifting competitions.
You should definitely be able to do these movements as it means youโll be able to move your body optimally but if the focus is muscle building then they shouldnโt be the focus of your hypertrophy programme.
Dumbbells are good as they tend to offer more range than a barbell and allow the wrist to be in a better position as well as help you work through any imbalances.
Machines work well as it means you can purely focus on the working a muscle through its full range without having to stabilise the weight or worry about getting stuck under it ๐

Good programming with implement a mixture of barbell, dumbbells and machines depending on the individual goals and ability.
Donโt feel like you have to do something because you saw someone with the body you want doing it.
Thereโs so many different options out there to get results, find what feels right for you and what you can progress to reach your goals ๐ช๐ฝ

When youโre setting yourself a training programme you want to make sure it suits your goals so you can get the most out of it.
If your goal is to generally be in better shape and feel stronger then an all round programme will work well until you have more of a focus on certain aspects.
If you have a specific goal in mind then you want to make sure your programming reflects this.
If the goal is purely to grow your legs then you donโt need to be doing back squats as theyโre not optimal for leg growth.
If you want a big back squat then you need to make sure you work on your ankle/ hip mobility, implement pause reps and make sure you have adequate rest and deloads.
If you want to get your first pull up you should probably be working on them in some way at least 3 times a week.
Many people will buy a programme from their favourite influencer because theyโre in shape and have a big following but not give any real thought as to whether the programme suits their goals.
This also works for picking a coach if you want to learn how to Olympic lift donโt go to a coach that doesnโt know how to coach it.
Knowing how to set up a programme can be tricky, I go how to set up a programme in my FREE fat loss and training guide.

Quite often I get people asking if I can review their programme as theyโre not seeing the results they want.
Most of the time it isnโt the programme but itโs how they implement it.
But here are some things that can make it good or bad.
A clear sign of bad programming is it being full of exercises you canโt perform correctly and progress.
A great example of this is the barbell back squat.
So many people put this into their programme to grow their legs because they think itโs a must do, but their form is horrific.
Meaning they canโt progress it safely and grow their legs and itโll often lead to injury.
Thereโs no problem with trying to improve your form on a specific exercise but you shouldnโt be loading more weight until you can do it correctly.
Another sign of bad programming is setting yourself a number of training days that you canโt do consistently.
When someone starts training again they often make the mistake of aiming to do more days than they can handle.
Leading to loads of missed sessions resulting in not enough training frequency to get the results theyโre after.
Set yourself enough training days that you hit every muscle 2-3 times a week and you can do consistently for a long period of time.

Barry came to me a few months ago wanting to get back into shape.
He was no stranger to the gym but the constant lockdowns and now working from home meant he didnโt feel like himself.

Donโt get me wrong a bit of friendly competition with others can be exactly what you need to light a fire in your belly and drive yourself towards your goals.
The only issue is when it comes to success people compare and compete with others in their head in a way that isnโt conducive to their progress.
When you think of being in a competition with someone you think of there being a clear winner and loser.
When people do this when it comes to someone elseโs success it puts up the idea that if someone else is seeing amazing progress it somehow means that they canโt see the same results.
๐๐๐๐ง๐ ๐๐จ ๐๐ฃ๐ค๐ช๐๐ ๐จ๐ช๐๐๐๐จ๐จ ๐ฉ๐ค ๐๐ค ๐๐ง๐ค๐ช๐ฃ๐!
Weโre not pulling from a limited well of success thatโll run dry at some point.
Someone else succeeding doesnโt take away from what you can do.
Congratulate them and see what you can learn from them.
Where did they start from?
What struggles did they have?
What did they find worked well for them?
Once you start being happy for other peopleโs successes and seeing it as a possible learning opportunity youโll be a lot happier and most likely will progress faster.
You may have noticed I havenโt been particularly active here for the past couple weeks.
Thatโs because s**t hit the fan and I didnโt really feel up for being motivational.
I definitely didnโt help myself feel better.
Every so often youโre going to go through s**t but you donโt have to actively make yourself feel worse.
Here are some tips, that I definitely should have followed myself ๐

This is a big one. Thereโs no point in dwelling on what you canโt change or thinking of how you could have done things differently.
Focus on what you can control now, your actions and how you react.

For some reason whenever we feel s**t we then notice our flaws and things we donโt like and laser in on them.
Being a dick to yourself isnโt going to get you feeling better.
๐๐จ๐ฎ๐ซ๐ข๐ฌ๐ก ๐๐จ๐ฎ๐ซ ๐๐จ๐๐ฒ
Chances are if youโre stressed youโre not going to want to stick to nutrition targets, but eating all crap food or not eating at all isnโt going to help.
It feeds back into being a dick to yourself, also having poor digestion when you already feel crappy isnโt great.
๐๐๐๐ฉ ๐๐จ๐ฏ๐ข๐ง๐
You may not want to train but doing some sort of movement will help.
Exercise is a great way to destress and get out your frustrations.
Itโll also distract you from what ever is going on.
๐๐ซ๐จ๐๐๐ฌ๐ฌ ๐๐ก๐๐ญ๐๐ฏ๐๐ซ ๐๐จ๐ฎโ๐ซ๐ ๐

Be that by journaling or venting to someone, getting it out and feeling your feelings will help you get through things much quicker than just bottling it up.

Stressful situations will often throw you off balance, getting yourself back into your routine will help you feel yourself again.
You donโt have to do everything at once, start small and get yourself back to where you need to be in your own time.
Hopefully these tips will help you when youโre feeling crap.

If youโre having issues growing a specific muscle its probably down to one or more of these reasons.
๐๐จ๐ญ ๐๐๐ญ๐ฎ๐๐ฅ๐ฅ๐ฒ ๐๐ซ๐๐ข๐ง๐ข๐ง๐ ๐ข๐ญ
Sounds obvious right?
But a lot of people will only hit a muscle once a week or every so often, if youโre doing that itโs not going to grow.
Aim for 2-3 times a week per muscle group.
You also want to be using the intended muscle when doing a specific exercise.
Youโll see many people just moving the weight as far as possible or not through any range.
Iโm looking at you, put all the weights on the leg press then move it 2 inches guys ๐.
When youโre performing a movement do it with intention, focus on contracting the muscle youโre meant to be working over the range it works in.
๐๐จ ๐๐ซ๐จ๐ ๐ซ๐๐ฌ๐ฌ๐ถ๐๐ฒ ๐๐ฏ๐๐ซ๐ฅ๐จ๐๐/ ๐๐ง๐ญ๐๐ง๐ฌ๐ข๐ญ๐ฒ
For your muscles to grow you have to put some stress on them to stimulate growth.
That means training with some intensity, going towards failure and sticking to rest times.
You need to make sure youโre pushing harder each week, progressive overload.
Please slow down, I see some sets get done like people have been put on 2x speed.
Not only are you not engaging the muscle youโre more likely to injure yourself as you have no control of the weight
๐๐จ๐ฎโ๐ซ๐ ๐๐จ๐ญ ๐๐๐ญ๐ข๐ง๐ ๐๐ง๐จ๐ฎ๐ ๐ก
This is a pretty big one and a massive issue for those who are forever dieting.
If you want your muscles to grow you need to eat.
That means enough calories and protein everyday.
If getting enough food in is too much of a struggle donโt be afraid of liquid calories.
Theyโll bulk up the cals and wonโt leave you feeling bloated.
Start making these changes to your routine and watch your muscles grow and strength sky rocket ๐.
Setting boundaries and making time for yourself is likely holding you back from reaching your goals.
Feeling like you have to do things or see people which then leaves you no time for yourself.
Youโre not able to train, buy and make food and ultimately take care of yourself.
You need to learn to say โnoโ.
Not just to say no but to say no without feeling the need to give an excuse.
You donโt need to give people a reason for why you need time to yourself.
Once you start doing this youโll have more downtime so youโll be better rested.
Youโll have time to train and eat well so youโll feel healthier and more confident.
And youโll have more time to do the things that really bring you joy and move you forward in your life.
All of this will make you a much happier person and youโll be able to spend the time you want with friends and family without that feeling of dread because of all the things youโre not able to do.
Chances are some people wonโt like it.
But honestly f**k them, if they donโt understand that you need to do things to make sure youโre happy then they donโt care if youโre happy ๐คท๐ฝโโ๏ธ.
came to me 4 months ago because he needed a change.
The lockdowns had beaten him physically and mentally.
He felt small and weak, he had gym and social anxiety and found the daily stresses of life really affected him.
In his first week of training I think he left the gym twice before getting anyway through his session.
He quickly got over his gym anxiety with support from myself and a few others that I coach.
After that first week it was all uphill.
I helped him understand his eating habits and tweak his nutrition to suit his goals.
He now loves the training and as a result has gained over 10kg in the last 4 months.
Not only that but his whole demeanour outside the gym has changed.
He has more energy and is more positive which has been noticed in his work leading him to get a raise!

Youโll get the physical results you want but youโll also get the confidence youโve been missing that changes other aspects of your life.
Your relationship with yourself and others will improve which will make your entire life better.

Being successful on your fitness journey is going to take some planning from the start.
You canโt go from one week eating what you want to hitting your protein goals without some forethought.
Youโre going to need to do a food shop and actually think about what you need to hit your targets.
What will you have for breakfast, lunch and dinner?
Will you need snacks to hit your protein?
Do you have plenty of food available so its easier for you to make the right choices?
Or are you going into the next week blind and already setting yourself up for failure?
Similar thing comes to training.
If you know your schedule is always busy have you looked at when you can realistically train?
Do you have your gym stuff ready and with you or do you need to go home first?
Have you written yourself a plan so you know exactly what youโre doing and how long youโre going to be training?
Being successful in anything requires some form of planning.
If you donโt have some form of plan youโre setting yourself up for failure which makes you less likely to continue.
Take some time to set up a plan, it doesnโt have to be spot on but it needs to give you a good starting point.
This will help you feel like youโre succeeding, from that you can build on it as you progress.
