Alcoholic hepatitis, which is unrelated to infectious hepatitis, is a potentially serious condition that can be caused by alcohol misuse over a longer period.

When this develops, it may be the first time a person is aware they're damaging their liver through alcohol.

Less commonly, alcoholic hepatitis can occur if you drink a large amount of alcohol in a short period of time (binge drinking).

The liver damage associated with mild alcoholic hepatitis is usually reversible if you stop drinking permanently.
Severe alcoholic hepatitis, however, is a serious and life-threatening illness. Many people die from the condition each year in the UK, and some people only find out they have liver damage when their condition reaches this stage.

You don’t have to be addicted to alcohol to develop the condition, regularly drinking over the guideline amount of 14 units per week can put you at risk.

Our North Locality Team held an Interactive Stall at Tesco Extra in Cumbernauld to raise awareness and understanding of the many and varied harms of alcohol.

Drinking too much alcohol can leave us with low energy, poor sleep, headaches and hangovers. But cutting back can help us feel better. How does your drinking add up?

But what does that look like for you?

Ensuring the health and wellbeing of children in Scotland is our biggest opportunity to see a Scotland where everybody thrives.

Public Health Scotland welcomes the incorporation of UNCRC and the protection that this ensures for children’s rights in Scotland. Not only will it mean that children and young people’s rights can be enforced, but it will also mean that public authorities must take steps to progressively realise children’s rights in decisions and action.

Childhood represents a special time in our lives when we must have additional protections. These protections safeguard the best start in life for children and create the foundations for good health into adulthood and older age. Preventing disease and promoting wellbeing for children and young people will prolong healthy life and reduce health inequalities for generations to come.
