Tynemouth Volunteer Life Brigade NEH North East Homeless

📣 📣 We are thrilled that Raytel Security Systems are proud sponsors of Crossing The Tyne Festival, for another consecutive year!

🕺 💃 The festival raises money for Tynemouth Volunteer Life Brigade and NEH North East Homeless.

This FREE community festival which will be held on 5th, 6th and 7th of August, is host to local bands/musicians performing in various venues around North and South Shields, Newcastle. All money raised will go to 3 very worthy charities.

With the easing of the Covid restrictions, the Crossing the Tyne Festival has been able to spread itself across various venues on both sides of the Tyne once more and Raytel Security Systems Ltd. continues to be a major sponsor. The main charitable organisations benefitting from this year’s festival will be Tynemouth Volunteer Life Brigade (TVLB) and Homeless in the North East.

Since its foundation in 1864 to rescue people from inshore shipwrecks, the role of the TVLB has changed dramatically and its main focus now is the rescue of people stranded by flooding or trapped on rocks below steep cliffs by the incoming tide. Working closely with the inshore rescue boats of the RNLI, the Brigades rescue team attended a record 150 call outs in 2021 and 69 callouts in the first six months of 2022. Particularly notable was the rescue of three men cut off by the tide in a place inaccessible by lifeboat at the south end of Whitley Bay in September 2021, implementing ‘snatch’ water rescue techniques to save a woman in the water at Tynemouth Longsands in July 2022 and using Rope Rescue equipment to rescue someone who had fallen at King Edwards Bay in the previous month. The Brigade is also heavily involved with teaching water safety and trying to help people who are trying to self-harm.

The Brigade still operates from the wooden Watch House Museum on the Headland opposite Tynemouth Priory and is well worth a visit. The unique nature of the Brigade and the museum were highlighted by Michael Portillo in one episode of ‘Great Coastal Railway Journeys’ as well as being the backdrop for a Sam Fender video for the BBC programme ‘Later…with Jools Holland’. The Brigade’s rescue team has also appeared in the BBC’s RNLI series ‘Rescue at Sea.’

As with the RNLI, the TVLB is a charitable organisation manned by volunteers and it relies totally on contributions to enable it to carry out its coastguard duties along the northeast coast, so please donate generously, particularly if you are able to attend one of the venues of the Crossing the Tyne Festival.
