Anglia Ruskin University Alumni
Upon graduating, all our students become alumni and are automatically members of ARU’s Alumni Network
Anglia Ruskin University has a proud history built on the success of several institutions since 1858. This page has been created because your University wishes to stay in touch with you, our alumni, to maintain a community that celebrates the institutions it has evolved from and into and the memories and successes shared by those who studied here.
Chloe worked for a number of years in film and television, before deciding to concentrate on her great love of illustration and storytelling. She enrolled at Cambridge School of Art, on our MA Children's Book Illustration degree.
While studying, Chloe started work on a story about a scientist and a giant jellyfish. With strong themes of resilience and endurance, the story eventually became The Search for the Giant Arctic Jellyfish. It is published by Walker Books, and won the Illustrated Books category at the Waterstones Children’s Book Prize 2024.
In 2024, Chloe was one of four graduates from our Children’s Book Illustration course to feature on the six-person Illustrated Books shortlist.

Good morning from our beautiful campus – one of the UK’s newest universities 😊
PREDICT Breast, co designed by ARU Professor Gordon Wishart, will better inform cancer treatment
The model is expected to reduce the need for chemotherapy in up to 38% of breast cancer patients who would previously have been advised to consider the treatment.
Professor Wishart, now Chief Medical Officer at Check4Cancer alongside his visiting role at ARU, said:
“Chemotherapy can cause significant physical effects such as nausea, weight loss, fatigue, bleeding, bruising and increased risk of infection. The data from the new model shows that for a significant number of women with breast cancer, chemotherapy can be safely avoided.
“The PREDICT Breast model has not been built with artificial intelligence but highlights that significant innovations can be achieved by using high quality data and traditional statistical and epidemiological principles.
“The next development phase will examine the additional prognostic benefit, if any, of expensive genetic risk profile tests over and above that of the free-to-user PREDICT Breast model.”

Meet Efua Taylor, Efua graduated with a MS in Engineering / Industrial Management, and now works as a network designer at BT. Covid hit during her studies, but just before Covid, Efua remembers the annual International Cultural Day event fondly as she got to “try lots of different foods and see another side of my peers outside of the classroom”. Aside from making friends and connections which are still good to this day, Efua benefitted from the mentorship program, and reflected how instrumental her mentor has been on her career journey.

KTP Associate Dr Sahrish Rehmani, supervised by Professor Mohammad Najlah, has just completed a successful collaboration with wellbeing company Lipolife to improve their product design and scale up manufacturing processes of their liposomal supplements.
This partnership was born out of Lipolife’s realisation of the gap in knowledge and expertise needed to achieve its business goals. This collaboration was partial funded by Innovate UK, reducing the risk level for the company.

We are to introduce you to Charles Nwachukwu, our Alumni of the Month.
When asked about his favourite memory of studying at ARU, Charles said:
“I loved being an International Digital Student Ambassador and representing ARU in the campaign that was led by Universities UK. It was an honour to be chosen to carry the flag of ARU as part of a national campaign and was a huge opportunity for me, giving me hope and confidence that I can and will be a part of even greater things in the future”.
“As part of the campaign, being referred to as a Nigerian was massive to me as well because my country's name was in the news and for a good reason; not for any negative or antisocial vices. I received heart-warming feedback from across the world when the campaign launched on what a good role model I am for kids growing up. I specifically remember someone from America saying she showed her kids the YouTube video and initially I hadn't thought about myself in that way, but it definitely made me feel good about myself".

Graduated with honours and a whole lot of memories...
Back in 1992, Geoff Silva graduated from ARU with a degree in Law, and later shared his memories with us of the day...”I think my family were literally the last ones to arrive at my graduation ceremony and I was in an awful state trying to find them. There were no mobile phones in those days to check where they were, but they arrived eventually and that’s the most important thing”.
It's always nice to take a trip down memory lane and we would love you to share your graduation memories in the comment below 😊

Meet Issy Bainbridge.
Issy graduated with a degree in Law at ARU in 2019 and then went on to study the LPC LLM at BBP in Cambridge. We asked Issy what advice she would give to Law students preparing for the world of work.
“Apply for all types of roles within a law firm, even if they aren't any training contracts straight away, as you will more than likely progress upwards if you work hard”.
“By starting as a lower position such as a paralegal, this does not place you in any worse position than obtaining a training contract straight away. If anything, it broadens your knowledge better. Employers are looking for more than good grades; being well rounded is just as important."

A champion for women's rights, Hawa D Sesay was the winner of our Alumni Public Service Award!
As a victim of FGM herself, Hawa was inspired by her ARU education to make helping others her life's mission. In 2012, she founded The Hawa Trust - the UK charity dedicated to supporting FGM survivors. They provide vital education, postnatal care, and practical support to vulnerable families.
Through her tireless advocacy, Hawa has trained professionals, lobbied Parliament, and helped implement new laws to protect girls at risk. Hawa's story is one of resilience, courage and compassion. She turned her own trauma into empowering countless women.

We love seeing the success of our alumni! Ariana completed her Masters at ARU and had this to say:
“ARU gave me some of the best friends I could ever ask for – the type of friends you consider as family. ARU also helped me improve my wet lab skills and unlocked a passion for teaching younger students, as I was able to work as a demonstrator while studying my Masters
I now work as an Associate Researcher in a neuroscience lab at Icahn School of Medicine of Mount Sinai in New York. I am a completely independent researcher with my own project, and I am so lucky to mentor students that come to the lab to develop their Bachelor degree projects or to just learn a little more of how a research lab works.”
In April, we had the pleasure of hosting ARU's annual Vice Chancellor's Outstanding Alumni Awards ceremony at our Chelmsford campus. This event is always a highlight, as it allows us to come together to celebrate the incredible achievements of our alumni.
If you missed the event, be sure to check out photos from the special night in this issue of the alumni magazine and check out the winners of this year's award ceremony here 👇
