Birtley Town Under 10 Greens
Saturday morning football team, in the Russell Foster Youth League First Division
Bit of an unenthusiastic session tonight but managed to finish off with a bit of fun and played a match. We’ll have a think and try something new for the lads over the next few weeks to inject some new life into the sessions.
Trainers of the week were Albie and Jack. Great attitude from them both taking on board what we ask them to do and executing it well. Special shout out to Albie though because every week he trains brilliantly; absolute joy to see. He always gives 100%, learns from his mistakes, knows when it’s time concentrate and listen, and he never complains. It’s clear to see the improvement he’s making in training and matches as well. Keep it up Albie.

1-1 this morning for the first game of 2024. A very lack lustre performance and probably lucky to get a point.
Saying that, we started off very well; some nice football being played winning us a corner. A lovely ball in by Joseph, a free header for Jack saved by the keeper only for Jack to tap in the rebound. 1-0. Then we went to sleep.
It was a scrappy match from here on in and the opposition won more battles in midfield. Alex was kept busy in goal but not really tested while we had one or two sniffs at goal. 1-0 at half time.
More of the same 2nd half maybe with a slight improvement from us; but we were still 2nd best. Not much fight in us, poor shape and discipline, sloppy on the ball and no confidence driving forward. A few pop shots from Leo and a rare chance created from nice football for Freddie but that was about it.
It was some poor and sloppy play in midfield from a loose ball that gave them their equaliser. Their player reacting first while we fell asleep and he strolled through one on one with Alex and buried it. 1-1.
We picked up a little bit from this but it wasn’t enough to get us a win. Plenty lessons learned from today, the most important one being attitude. This has to be right from the start until the final whistle. We need to battle for everything. No easy games at this level. These lads are all quality players with lots of ability; but attitude before ability every time.
Man on the match today was Leo, well done lad. Lots of running and determination today, deserved a goal.

Fantastic win this morning for the lads. 4-0 against a side that beat us 2-1 at the start of the season. Another tremendous team effort.
The opposition started off the better team with the wind behind them; we were scrappy and couldn’t get into a rhythm. The lads defended brilliantly through this spell and built on this to dominate half way through the first half, testing their keeper a few times.
Sonny brave to win a header in midfield that came down with snow on it, Freddie cutting in from the left to square it to Jack right side of the box who buried it from there. 1-0.
The 2nd came from a great determined run with the ball from Jack. He was pushed out wide but got passed his man then drilled it accords the box. Freddie was there waiting but before it could get to him it hit their defender and rifled in from close range. 2-0. We’ll give Jack the assist.
2-0 at half time and well deserved.
2nd half we had the wind and sun on our side. We were well on top for the entire second half; constant pressure everywhere on the pitch and winning everything.
3rd goal came from a corner for us, that missed everyone. Leo chasing everything and never giving up, kept the ball in near the opposite corner flag, drilling it in low for Jack to bury from close range. Shout out to Freddie for this one who made a great run coming out of the box to give Leo another option and pulling the defender out of position to give Jack the space he needed. 👏🏻
The 4th goal was a lovely counter attack. We soaked up a bit of pressure then I think it might have been Joey or Freddie who got it clear to Leo up top. Leo held the ball up and waited for support from Jack in midfield and rolled it through for Jack to run on ti. Jack took it the rest of the way and lashed it in.
It could have been a lot more. Lots of shots from distance and some good saves from their keeper. A couple of things to learn from today: decision making when we’re well ahead, shooting when maybe a pass is a better choice. And also keeping our shape and discipline when where well ahead to stop them playing though the gaps.
Man of the match today was given to Sonny but the referee. His words were ‘he got up and down the pitch brilliantly and put in some great tackles’. Well done Sonny.

First session back in a while tonight and we could tell 🤣. Lads were a bit slugish and slow to start but once they got into their stride they were all switched on and competitive. Well done lads.
Trainer of the week this week is Joey. Excellent communication and hunger to have the ball during the games. This lad is on a roll.

Return fixture from the first game of the season that we lost 1-0. Score reversed this time. A 1-0 win! Get in lads!
It was a very close game, like it was in the first match and both games should probably have been a draw. Today we wanted it more and their desire got them the win.
Lots of good battles won and lost all over pitch, but when we did lose a battle (which happens) the lads were there to win the next one. From start to finish.
Shape, discipline and attitudes excellent from the start. Constant pressure from the strikers forcing errors and this lead to our goal. A slightly over hit through ball was miskicked by their keeper; great pressure and willing to chase lost causes from Leo who picked up the loose ball then thumped it in to an empty net from long range. 1-0. Half time.
Nothing really anything more of note to report; a number of long range shots from both sides but neither keeper troubled. A couple of good chances for Jack and Sonny but shot off target. Excellent team ethic and excellent defending from the lads at the back and in goal.
Their coach couldn’t pick a man of the match today, he said there were all excellent so the award goes to all of them, and we agree. They were all superb; fighting spirit was excellent and It was great to see the lads battling for each other and everything. At this level, in my opinion, it’s attitude and effort that count the most when all of the teams are equally as good as each other.
Well done lads.

The winning streak came to an end this morning losing 2-0 to a side we beat 4-2 a few weeks back, and deservedly so.
A very poor warm up (not helped by a delayed kick off time) and the lads not being ready and switched on for a tough match lead to a very poor 1st half. No pressure on the ball, not many tackles going in, poor passing, not much desire to have the ball and no clear chances created. Their first goal came from us standing off them, not attempting to win it back and allowing them to calve us open and slot home an easy chance. Their second was our own fault again when another sloppy misplaced pass gave them the ball at the edge of our box and they made no mistake from distance. 2-0 down at half-time and a bit of a wake up call; teams aren’t going to just let us win because we have beaten them before.
Much better 2nd half. Attitudes and effort back to where they should be and we were the better team but we couldn’t create any clear chances. Some good battles won and nice play in midfield but today we started far too late.
A big lesson for the lads; there are going to be no easy games in this division. Its a high level, a great standard and the teams are all capable of beating each other. Most games will boil down effort and attitude and if that slips then so will performances and results, like they found out today.
Man of the Match today was Joey. A solid performance in every position at the back. Great week Joey lad!

Was a cold one last night so plenty of running and fitness. Bit of a slow start with some clarting about but once we sorted that it was a good session. Managed to get a match in at the end which is always good.
Trainers of the week were Albie (2 weeks in a row) and Joey for their work rate and paying attention from the off. 2 great examples of what the group should aim for every week. Well done lads 👌🏻.

Another win today! 7 off the bounce now. What a run from the lads. It didn’t come easy today and was very much a game of 2 halves.
We went 1-0 early on after some great pressure forced a corner. Leo floated one in from the right, the keeper misjudged it, the ball lofted over him and Sonny was there to calmly volley it home. 1-0.
A ball to Freddie up front from the back created our 2nd goal. Strength of a bear from Freddie to hold up the ball, great support from the midfield and Jack picked up a lose ball from Freddie’s battle with their defender. Jack went through 1 on 1 and made no mistake. 2-0.
The third came from some quick, neat, patient passing across the pitch. Winning the ball back high up the pitch, recycling it then Joseph laying a lovely ball out wide to Freddie on the left. Freddie calmly found Jack unmarked in the box who buried it in the bottom corner. A good example of how passing can pull teams out of position and create space for good chances. 3-0. Excellent teamwork.
Bit of a lucky break for the 4th. Their defender’s clearance hit Freddie and bounced in. Good pressure on the ball though and it wouldn’t have been 4 if the lads didn’t press and force errors.
4-0 at half time. Coasting and very comfortable. Wining our battles and playing some good football.
2nd half we started very complacent and let them back into the game; we stopped battling, let them have the ball and we switched off. It didn’t take them long to get one back. A great solo goal. Their player strolled past a few of our players unchallenged and smashed it home from the right hand side of the box. 4-1.
We kept on struggling; discipline and shape started to slip before they got another one back. Bit of a calamity this one. An unexpected missed kick clearance at the back from close range left Alex stranded and nothing he could do. These things happen 🤷🏼♂️. 4-2.
The lads switched on from this point and got right back into the game after this dodgey 10-15 minutes. The lads found their fighting spirit and got back on top, winning their battles. A great goal line clearance stopped us going 5-2 up, plus a couple of chances going narrowly wide.
Overall a good win against a good side we drew with in a summer friendly.
Man of the Match given from their coaches today was ‘No nonsense’ Harvey. About time he got one, he’s been brilliant all season. Solid as a rock as usual and made some very important tackles, as usual. Well done Harv 👊🏻.

Great session last night. Lots of running to keep warm and to maintain fitness and loads of work passing, moving and shooting. It was another hard one to pick a ‘trainer of the week’ because they were all on the ball from the off and we could see they all put the graft in. It’s great to see them all looking and listening to see who gets the vote at the end of the session; they all believe they’ve done enough to get it (and they’re right). It shows they know they’re putting in the hard work and they’ve enjoyed themselves. Keep it up lads!
This week we decided to give it to Joseph and Albie; never took their foot off the gas.

6 on the bounce! A great 5-1 win today and it could have been more. 6th game in a row we couldn’t have asked any more from the lads; attitude, effort and commitment absolutely spot on again.
We went 1-0 up quite early on with a brilliant solo run from Jack that started well in his own half, holding off his man the whole way. Finally getting into the box and rolling it in the bottom right corner with his left foot. Brilliant work Jack.
Our 2nd goal was a lovely team effort that started from Harvey at the back winning the ball, playing a 1-2 with Albie then releasing Jack along the right flank. Jack whipped in a low cross and Leo finished it at the near post with a crisp finish. What a goal lads! 2-0.
Our pressure was starting to pay off and played a part in our 3rd goal, winning it back in midfield. Jack got his shot off which the keeper saved but spilled and Freddie reacted quickly, pinched it and rolled it into an empty net from a tight angle. 3-0.
A lack of discipline with our shape just before halt time meant they got one back; a few of the lads caught out of position gave them a rare chance. A high shot from distance parried by Alex then clawed away off the line. Alex said it didn’t cross and even the ref said it was 50/50. No idea why he gave the goal 🤷🏼♂️. 3-1 at half time.
More of the same in the 2nd half as the lads kept up the pressure and hard work. The opposition didn’t really threaten.
Great pressure from Leo then Sonny from their goal kick won us the ball back in their half. Some neat short passing when had position from Leo, Sonny and Jack then I think it was Sonny who put Jack through on goal who rolled it in the bottom right corner with his left peg again. 4-1. Great work.
We were well on top for the whole of the 2nd half , constant pressure when they tried to play form the back. Joseph pressed high for the 5th goal, taking the ball off their defender who hardly had time to control it, dribbled it, looked up and rifled it bottom corner from the left. Great hit! 5-1.
We could have a few more; plenty of blocked shots and saves from their keeper. Something to work on regarding shape and staying disciplined when we’re ahead and comfortable too.
Man of the match every week is given by the opposition coaches, and today it was awarded to Jack. He was a constant problem for them; he was absolutely every where. Tackling, beating players, creating chances and getting shots off. 2 goals and and assist as well. Well done Jack.

Smashing session tonight. Great attitudes from all of the lads. Lots of touches of the ball, working in tight spaces, passing and shooting. Trainer of the week goes to the whole group; all switched on and straight into from the off. They’ve set a good benchmark tonight to aim for every week. It’s also good to see a good level of competitiveness in their training as well as matches. Well done lads, keep it up.

2-1 winners today, that’s 5 on the bounce but this game could have went either way. It was a scrappy game with strong tackles from both sides and neither team dominating . A very good battle. We struggled to get the ball down, get into a rhythm and play our game but the lads’ positive attitudes, grit and determination off the ball got us the win.
We went 1-0 up with a quick attack. Freddie receiving the ball wide right about half way, great hold up play then releasing it to Jack. Jack drove on with the ball, got into the box then squared it to Freddie (great run Freddie) who tapped in from close range. Excellent from both Freddie and Jack.
They equalised not long before half time with a shot through a crowd and it nestled in the corner. 1-1.
Plenty of chances at both ends in the first half; both keepers keeping the score at 1-1.
2nd half was more of the same. Both sides battling and struggling to get into any rhythm, the other team probably having the better of the chances. Alex was fantastic keeping the score at 1-1, and their keeper the same.
With about 2 minutes to go the lads’ persisted, kept battling and it paid off. Leo beating a couple of players on the left, squared it to Freddie and slotted it home. 2-1!
A Jack handball in the last minute (he denies it 😂) gave them one last chance to equalise from a good range to shoot. The lad struck it well and was bound for the top corner but Alex at full stretch pushed it away. What a save lad! 2-1.
We weren’t at our best today but the work rate and attitude of all the lads was brilliant again.
Man of the Match was Alex. No doubt he deserved it today with a string of brilliant saves from start to finish, that one at the end being the best one. Unbelievable save. Well done Alex.
Also a shout out to Harvey; what he does sometimes goes unnoticed. He’s absolutely rock solid at the centre of defence, disciplined and brave every time he plays.

Come back kings again today with a fantastic 4-2 win.
The lads took ages to get switched on this morning. Chatting about falling out of an aeroplane and poo just before kick off might not have helped 😂.
The opposition dominated the first 10–15 minutes; we looked scared and not up for the fight. We went 1-0 down to a wicked deflection which took it over and round Alex. Nothing we could do about that. The 2nd goal was a bit of a gift. Their player strolled past 2 of ours without a single tackle made then smashed it home. It was a great finish to be fair to the lad.
Bit of a telling off after seemed to gee them up. The lads started to fight and get stuck in. Sonny won us a free kick about half way, Joey chipped it into the box then Jack stuck his head on it with his back to goal and done the keeper. 2-1.
The lads kept up the hard work and pressure and it was 2-2 soon after. A blocked shot from distance from Sonny fell back to his feet and he released Freddie 1 on 1 who slotted it bottom bins. 2-2 at half time.
The lads kept at it 2nd half creating lots of chances, putting in some strong tackles, lots of energy in midfield and some excellent defending and goalkeeping. Their keeper was outstanding!
We eventually and deservedly went 3-2 up after a squared ball from Jack to Freddie lead to a scramble between Freddie and their keeper. Credit to Freddie for never giving up until the ball crossed the line. Great determination.
We were on top for most of the 2nd half and once that went in the other team deflated. We quickly made it 4-2 with a lovely through ball from Jack to Freddie who tucked it away nicely again. Hat-trick hero. Well done Freddie lad!
Every single player was brilliant today after we went 2-0 down. Some excellent tackles in midfield from Sonny, Leo and Jack, solid defending and goalkeeping and some great finishing from Freddie. The shape was excellent, very disciplined defending from Joseph, Joey and Albie, and also jack and sonny when they filled in. Shout out to Joseph, Joey and Albie at the back, they were rock solid. Alex didn’t have a lot to do because of them but was also very assured when he was called upon.
Man of the Match was Leo. Loads of energy, great awareness and some strong tackling. This lad’s pressure on the opposition was priceless today; he never gave up and stopped them playing from the back. Caused them loads of problems. Well done Leo!

No game this morning, but we did have a bit of fundraising at Morrison’s, Birtley. The lads managed to raise a whopping £600.18p! Thanks to everyone who put in to their buckets.
All of the money raised will go towards the team and their football journey. It will help to pay for kits, fees, a tournament in Flamingo Land at the end of season and anything else that they need along their way.
Great session from the lads tonight. It’s was really hard to give the Trainer of the Week this week because they all put the graft in, listened and took everything on board. It’s credit to them all that they’ve made this decision a hard one this week.
We have 3 Trainers of the Week this week; Freddie, Leo and Sonny. It would have been unfair for any of these lads to not win so well done you 3. They just pipped it . Effort and attitude outstanding from start to finish.
First game sporting our new traditional green and white home kit this morning, the lads look as smart as darts. The lads christened them with a solid 3-1 win; 3 wins on the bounce now. Once again their attitudes were excellent digging deep when they had to and fighting for the win.
It was a game of 2 halves today. We battered them first half, scoring early on winning the ball in midfield then some neat short passing leading to Sonny setting up Jack who finished with a good strike form the left edge of the box. 1-0
It wasn’t long before we were 2 up when Freddie pressured the keeper into rushing his clearance that ended up going straight to Jack who put it into an empty night from the edge of box. Great pressure and pressing high up the pitch. 2-0
We went 3-0 up soon after with what was one the best goals I think we’ve scored. Alex started it off from his box passing the ball into the midfield. Sonny and Jack moved us up the pitch with some lovely 1-2s then Jack finding Freddie in the box who tucked it away. A very fast flowing move from the back to the front without the ball leaving the floor and the opposition not having time to put in a tackle. Excellent goal lads.
We conceded 1 just before half time form the penalty spot, Alex going the right way and we’re sure he got a hand to it.
2nd half the lads had to dig deep and battle for the win. A few scrambles at the back that we reacted to first and cleared. A handful of good saves from Alex and rock solid defending from Harvey, Joey, Albie and Joseph all helping to keep the score at 3-1.
Man of the match today was Sonny. Attacked and defended well for the whole game. Used the ball well creating chances and made some important tackles to break the play up when we were under pressure. Well done Sonny.

We received our new kits this week. Massive thanks to BM Steel and SPS a Division of Barclay & Mathieson for their very generous sponsorship. They have provided the lads with home and away kits, training top and rain jacket.
A belated post from Thursday’s training session. Trainer of the week this week was Alex. He’s only been with us a few weeks but his attitude is always spot on; he listens, takes everything in, and puts in 100% effort.
Another battling performance today from the lads, coming from behind again to get a deserved 3-1 win. The attitude and effort the lads have put in these last 2 weeks is a joy to see. Fighting for every ball.
The effort was there from the start, bit scrappy and lack of confidence in midfield in the first half and went 1-0 down at the break. No idea what happened for the goal; both teams seem to stop until the ref said play on and they reacted quicker.
2nd half we came out a different team and started to play with a bit of confidence. Sonny smashing home a low free kick from a tight angle to make it 1-1. Some lovely football from sonny and Jack to win the ball in the middle and work it out wide. Then an even better 1-2 with Freddie down the right to put Freddie in a great position to swing it in for Jack to finish from close range. Excellent goal. 2-1.
Leo grafted his legs off from the start and deserved a goal, and it was his pressure on the defenders and keeper forcing the keeper to come miles out his box. A loose ball falling to Jack who smacked it into an empty net from a canny distance. 3-1.
Alex was solid in goal. Freddie, Harvey and Joey never out a foot wrong at the back. Jack and Sonny brilliant in midfield after an untidy 1st half. Leo never stopped running up front and didn’t give the defenders a seconds peace.
Man of the Match was Freddie Cafu Shaw for the 2nd week running 👏🏻, playing at right back both weeks. Scored a beauty last week and set up one this week. Defended and attacked well again today. Well done Freddie lad, fully deserved

We were back at the races today! A cracking game which we deserved to win 4-3.
First off, the lads have set the standard for attitude and effort. They battled for every ball and dug deep when they had to. They were all superb.
Reverted back to a 3-2-1 formation that we played last season and what we switched to last week after struggling with 2-3-1. The lads looked much more comfortable and confident with this shape.
Started off brilliantly. Great fighting from Jack to win the ball in midfield and put Leo through on goal who made 1-0, great finish under the keeper. We switched off a bit towards half time and conceded just before the break. 1-1 at half time.
Changed the team a bit for the start of the second half and quickly went 3-1 down. Not the lads fault, our fault for changing it up when it didn’t need it. We changed it back to the team we started with and went back at it. A great ball in from a corner (not sure who it was) and Harvey attacking it like a rhino put it away with a lovely volley. The lads didn’t stop, their attitudes were spot on and kept the pressure on. A bit of a goal mouth scramble after a free kick and the loose ball fell to Joey at the edge box who slotted it top bins. 3-3.
Shout out to Alex too with 2 or 3 good saves to keep the score at 3-1 before we changed the team back.
We had a few missing today meaning we had no subs so we expected to be huffing and puffing towards the end. WEY NO! The lads kept going right to the end with lots of pressure on their defenders. Freddie beat his man to a half cleared ball, touch, and smacked the buggar from about 25 yards from the right wing and it dipped right in the top corner. 4-3. What a goal Freddie lad!
Man of the Match today was Freddie. He started at right back today and to be honest he was rock solid. When we moved him from there we didn’t look the same side at all and lost a lot of balance. His performance at right back today was like watching a prime Cafu. Well deserved Freddie 👏🏻. All the lads deserve credit, they were all brilliant.

They reacted really well to a change in formation for the last 7 minutes and dominated; got a goal then could have pinched a point. Great strike from a free kick by Leo to get us back in the game but we just ran out of time. A positive we’ll work on for next week.

Shout out to Freddie who had an impressive stint at the back as well 👏🏻
We start the season with a 1-0 loss this morning to a scrappy goal late on. It was a tight game; battles all over the pitch but the lads deserved at least a point. Effort was outstanding from every player.
Man of the Match was Alex today, heck of a debut from the keeper and fully deserved.
