Simon Hyde Photographer

A Portrait and Documentary photographer who probably falls somewhere towards the Humanist genre. This approach is seen through all aspects of my work.

Standing back and observing what is around me, I capture moments of emotion between fellow human beings.

A wonderfully written piece covering Open Eye Gallery LOOK! Photo Biennial 2022 : CLIMATE

I know! The RPS!! :-) It’s yet another rather surreal moment for me. I've written a small intro to it here:

Take a read - there's a link to the RPS after my short musings on the topic :-)

AI, Text and Data Mining and what it means for you.

Why should photographers and image-makers be concerned about the newly proposed Text and Data Mining exception?

- Up to this point, the UK’s copyright framework has arguably been amongst the most innovation-friendly and world-leading pieces of legislation protecting creators, with careful consideration for the significant and widespread creation of and investment in creative works, leading to an industry worth over 6% to the UK economy.
- This new proposed Text and Data Mining exception for commercial purposes by the UK government - noting a UK non-commercial TDM exception already exists - undermines this consideration by freely allowing the machine mining of all imagery published online for any use by anyone, including AI developers, with many creators being unaware of this activity taking place.
- With serious economic consequences for any creator, but most especially photographers with data-rich images, this proposal completely short-circuits the licensing process allowing AI developers and others free commercial access to content for which, under normal circumstances, they would have to license and pay for.

The UK government's next step is to introduce proposed legislation with an economic impact assessment soon.
We need to show evidence of the economic harm this could do to AOP members, to mitigate the risk to your businesses.
We will be issuing a simple survey soon for all members to respond to - please do take part so we can protect your interests.

“Make, Mend, Sustain @ Chester Charity Shops“

A few images from a fashion shoot at Share Shop’s Mold Warehouse in North Wales. The shoot being culmination of 3 months of work and collaboration bringing all this together. A belting day was had 😊

I had the privilege of having the brilliant photographer and educator AJ Wilkinson alongside me for the shoot; much credit goes AJ's way for the day going as well as it did.

All the outfits that our damned hard working model, Bernice, was wearing were made by the brilliantly creative minds of University of Chester Fashion students using cast aside garments and materials that they chose from two Chester charity shops - Share Shop and Save The Children.
Curtains, duvet covers, old shirts, left over fabric - you name it the fashion students set to work creating some amazing pieces of fashion. No idea how they do that ❤️. It’s brill! ❤️❤️

All this work is part of a much bigger project - the “LOOK photo Biennial 2022 - Climate” - produced by Open Eye Gallery, Liverpool and exhibiting at Open Eye from 14 July — 4 September 2022⁣. The exhibition is rammed full of superbly engaging work; vibrant and energetic imagery with profound and important messages, cleverly communicated with carefully curated images and with collaboration and community at its heart.

A selection of some the best images from Make, Mend, Sustain are being exhibiting at Share Shop, Chester and Save The Children, Chester until the start of August.

Well worth a look!

JakLash Cash

An impromptu Street Photo Shoot...

"Could we have a few photo's at all please mate?" was the request from JakLash Cat's Phil Blundell.

And so a rather speedy and Impromptu photo shoot ensued in Chester on July 1st 2022 for the exceptionally talented JakLash Cash.
(My daughter, Rosie, patiently waiting and taking a hard earned rest on the bench by the side of me whilst a fired off a few shots.)

It was proper good to be able to do this. And it provides an opportunity to have a playful approach to the edit with some alternative colour grading and post processing.

I hope you like them Phil ;-)
