"Such a wonderful exhibition " - just one of the many lovely comments we've had about the latest exhibition by Chichester Art Society- what a talented bunch!
You can see their exhibition until June 23rd and we are open Tuesday to Saturday from 10am to 4.30pm and Sunday from noon to 4pm.
Pop in and support so many of our local artists.
Entry is free but, as a charity, we welcome all donations no matter how small, to help us keep art alive in and around Chichester.

Meet Vivienne, another of our wonderful volunteers.
'Being new to town I have found the gallery to be a great place to spend some time as a volunteer, to meet people and see the ever changing art. Not being an artist, it was a bit daunting to thinking of joining but I am so glad I did, everyone is so welcoming and friendly. I really enjoy meeting the artists and visitors and feeling part of the life of the city.'
Everyone's reasons for volunteering are different and we are always looking for different skills and experience including finance, admin, social media, fundraising, web design and marketing - if you would like to join the team please contact [email protected] or pop in and chat to one of our volunteers.

Meet Loraine, one of our fabulous volunteers!
Like some of our volunteers (but by no means all), Loraine has a lot of experience in the art world- having first studied History of Decorative Arts and Crafts at Brighton and then History of Design at the Royal College of Art / V&A, Loraine had a range of museum roles during her career.
Volunteering with Oxmarket Contemporary means she can use her extensive experience to support our exhibitions programme but the social side is just as important too.
You don't have to be an art expert to volunteer with us- we are looking for volunteers with all sorts of skills and experience from finance and admin to social media and fundraising.
Volunteering with us is both fun and rewarding- but don't take our word for it- pop in and chat to one of volunteers and see for yourself. We are open Tuesday to Saturday from 10am to 4.30pm and Sunday from noon to 4pm.
Or you can contact us at [email protected] to find out more.

Kyle Lights Up the Ox!’
Tuesday 2nd April saw the Private Views and joint Launch Reception for our two current exhibitions.
‘Burn, Burn, Burn-The Beats Light Up The Ox’ is a Beat Generation Exhibition of works by Allen Ginsberg, Jack Kerouac and William Burroughs plus the photography and filming of the Beats by Robert Frank, curated by Chichester University Professors Hugo Frey and Dick Ellis.
‘Transitions’ is an amazing solo show by photographic artist Christopher Newberry.
Kyle Neale, a Chichester Festival Youth Theatre Young Practioner read two poems by Ginsberg and Kerouac and while reciting Ginsberg’s ‘A Super Market in California’ Kyle moved between the many attending the Reception , firing at them the questions Ginsberg asks in the poem such as.-‘Who killed the pork chops? What price bananas?’
Kyle then mounted the stage and recited Kerouac’s ‘Old Western Movies’. Inspired by the recording of the poem by William Burroughs, he skilfully also played his own guitar for background effect.
Other younger generation input into the Beat Exhibition included the Poster Design and Robert Frank and Jack Kerouac display panel by local student Georgina Patterson.
Good Luck messages had also been received that evening from Len Deighton who designed the UK cover of Kerouac’s ‘On the Road’ shortly before he wrote ‘The Ipcress File’, and Astrid, the widow of The Evergreen Review’s Barney Rosset. Alice, daughter of Philip Castle, who designed the cover of Burroughs’s ‘Wild Boys’ which was on display (and also the posters for Stanley Kubrick’s film ‘A Clockwork Orange’), was also present as a guest of Christopher Newberry.
The exhibitions are on until April 14th and we are open Tuesday to Saturday from 10am to 4.30pm and Sunday from noon to 4pm.
Entry is free but we welcome donations to help us keep art alive in Chichester.

Oxmarket are delighted to welcome Christopher Cristóbal Newberry with his ever-evolving work, encapsulated in his exhibition, “Transitions”, which depicts his work at different phases of his development.

As he puts it, he is “pulling at the heartstrings with the neurons of the mind”. He has photographed parts of reality – scenes, objects or people. Christopher says, “a photograph is literally light that has bounced off reality and into the camera”. He transforms this reality into either impossibly ‘perfect’ images or into abstractions. According to Garry Kenard, director of Art and Mind, “in Newberry’s pictures all aspects of the image are enhanced, from heightened colours to exaggerated symmetry to sharpened horizons and outlines. All of this leads to an art which can transform our emotional perception of the material world”.

We are open Tuesday to Saturday from 10am to 4.30pm and Sunday from noon to 4pm. Entry is free but we welcome donations to help us keep art alive in Chichester.

Still and Life and Art is the fabulous new exhibitions in the Wilson gallery for the The Philpots, 3 artists from the same family.
Ellie Philpot studied art in London and West Sussex and loves to create unique contemporary pieces that bring statement, perspectives and colour into a space.
Adam Philpot uses a mix of film and digital mediums to explore life as it passes and he hopes the viewer can appreciate the significant things he includes.
Karah Philpot studied art until A level and is now a teacher. She has returned to painting and uses gouache, acrylics and some watercolour to create colourful, straightforward and often humorous

The exhibition runs until March 30th and we are open Tuesday to Saturday from 10am to 4.30pm and Sunday from noon to 4pm.
Entry is free but we welcome donations to help us keep art alive in Chichester.

The exhibition runs until March 30th and we are open Tuesday to Saturday from 10am to 4.30p and Sundays from noon to 4pm.

Two fabulous exhibitions by local artists end this Sunday: Samuel McGann describes himself as a mixed media artist working in acrylic paint, acrylic ink, oil paint, oil stick and charcoal. He often uses a fish eye lens or takes multiple shots from different locations to capture a moment - the resulting perspective in his paintings is skewed, rounded and altogether involving, drawing the viewer in from all angles. Samuel's work is on show in the Rank gallery.
Mary Carless' work is heavily influenced by life in Brazil and the Primitive painting and artifacts she saw there. Vibrant colours, exciting patterns and repeated themes of the jungle and animals characterise her work in this show in the Wilson gallery.

Photos from Oxmarket Contemporary's post 11/03/2024

Mary Carless' vibrant and uplifting show 'All Things Bright' is now on in our Wilson gallery. Mary's colourful semi- abstract expressionistic style contains themes of birds and moons, rich foliage ,patterns and images from life experiences, emotions, music and love.
Her exhibition runs until March 17th and we are open from 10am to 4.30pm Tuesday to Saturday and on Sundays from noon to 4pm.

An Unspoken Discourse: A conversation in paint

We are delighted to bring you a unique collection of paintings and drawings by two exceptional south coast artists, Colin Merrin and Malcolm Crocker whose show, ‘An Unspoken Discourse’, runs to Sunday December 10th.

Colin is a former headteacher of a London pupil referral unit and his paintings and drawings reflect his interest in behaviour and the human condition and how it impacts on events in history.

Like Colin, Malcolm has been an artist all his working life and paints imaginary strange dystopian landscapes and structures,’ said Malcolm. ‘ I enjoy the interplay of landscape and architecture which questions the idea of time and issues around the disintegration and erosion of earth and the gradual return to nature.’

Colin and Malcolm are established artists who have exhibited in galleries and spaces both nationally and internationally.

This exhibition is witty, colourful and thought provoking. A visual feast and a must to visit next time you are in Chichester.

We are open Tuesday to Saturday from 10am to 4.30pm and Sunday noon to 4pm.
Entry is free but if you enjoy what you see, please consider making a donation to help keep art alive in Chichester.
