On this day, 9 May 2012, Vidal Sassoon, the "anti-fascist warrior hairdresser" died aged 84. As a teenager in London he fought Oswald Mosley's fascists in the streets with his hairdressing scissors, as part of the militant 43 Group. The Group was formed by Jewish ex-servicemen and women, who were determined to continue the fight against fascism after the end of World War II. When once asked what had happened to his bruised face by a client Sassoon responded: "Oh, nothing, madam, I just fell over a hairpin."
