Historically, sexual violence has been used as a weapon of war during Guatemala's 36-year internal armed conflict.😔⠀⠀
⠀⠀
Hundreds of women in the Guatemala City garbage dump live in isolation experiencing astronomical rates of gender-based violence without the opportunity to access services. ⠀⠀
⠀⠀
Our charity partner Creamos provides therapy sessions through which women are provided with basic knowledge about characteristics of intimate partner (IPV) and gender-based violence (GBV).⠀⠀
⠀⠀
The therapy helps them identify violence in their own lives, families and community; and increases their understanding of women’s rights and gender-based violence laws.⠀⠀

5 months of school supplies🎒📘⠀

Ethiopia is faced with widespread poverty and a lack of opportunities, especially for the young. Families struggle to send their kids to school and have very few resources to provide their children with the necessities they need for attending school. ⠀

Providing children with quality education can help break the poverty cycle. Not all families can afford to provide basic school supplies for their children. Hope for Children equips them with the necessary resources and textbooks.⠀

Christmas is not over yet🌲🥳!! It's still only the 10th day 🎵🎶🎵⠀

Inspired by the famous song, we created our own version - the bundle.⠀

For every day of the Christmas season starting Christmas Day, we've chosen a rural project in one of the coffee-growing countries and created small but meaningful impact aligned with the UN's SDGs.⠀

On the 1st day of Christmas, la la la la la LA🎵⠀

🎶 1 mosquito net to help prevent the spread of malaria in Kenya🌍⠀

In Africa, malaria and other mosquito-borne diseases, pose a greater risk to life than HIV and AIDS-related illnesses. In the remote communities of developing countries, malaria can kill. Children, the elderly and expectant mothers are particularly vulnerable. Mosquito nets are a cost-effective and eco-friendly way of lowering the mortality rate caused by mosquito-borne diseases. ⠀

In Turkana, northern Kenya, where New Ways operates, Malaria is the top illness. New Ways distributes at least 200 nets per year or more depending on the funds received. ⠀

2023 - what a steep learning curve!!⠀

So many moments to celebrate but there has been plenty more hopelessness(...and homesickness).⠀

I found a little something early in the year that kept me going through our silent battles.😔⠀

"It is not the critic who counts; not the man who points out how the strong man stumbles, or where the doer of deeds could have done them better. ⠀

The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena, whose face is marred by dust and sweat and blood; who strives valiantly; ⠀

Phare Ponleu Selpak meaning The Brightness of the Arts – is a Cambodian non-profit art school located in Battambang, offering support to children, youth and communities through artistic, educational, social and community outreach and engagement programs since 1994.⠀

Powered by your purchase, we've unlocked the artistic potential of vulnerable young adults in Cambodia by giving them professional applied arts lessons.⠀

These lessons bring hope into their lives by providing access to employment opportunities in the fields of graphic design, visual arts and digital animation. ⠀

Did you know we roast our own coffee?⠀⠀
⠀⠀
In fact, our business started out as roasting coffee for home-brewing enthusiasts, and we only set up a coffee shop a year and a half later after several pop-ups and food festivals.⠀⠀
⠀⠀
So, what's the big deal you ask? Well, there are several advantages of roasting coffee as opposed to buying roasted coffee from other roasters (which is what most coffee shops do).⠀⠀
⠀⠀
First and foremost is quality...⠀⠀
⠀⠀
👍🏼Control over quality: By roasting our own coffee, we have more control over the supply chain ensuring the beans are fresh and of the highest quality.💚⠀⠀
⠀⠀
🫐Unique flavour profiles: It also allows us to develop unique flavour profiles that set our beans apart from others( and win awards🏆😋).⠀
⠀⠀
🤝🏽Provenance: By sourcing and roasting our own coffee we get to meet and know the people who grow our coffee. Now, isn't that wonderful? (And this allows you to know exactly which farms our coffee comes from👨🏽‍🌾👩🏽‍🌾).⠀

🍃Lower carbon footprint: Finally, it allows us to choose climate-mitigating shade-grown coffee at the origin but also lower our emissions by only roasting using clean and renewable energy.🍃⠀⠀

This is Doña Aide. ⠀

She lives in a small village in rural Bolivia. As a girl, she raced her classmates to the nearest spring to collect water. But the water was dirty and in short supply. As an adult, she helped bring a piped water system to the entire village. Now, everyone has water at home and the only thing she races after is her 3-year-old son.⠀

Did you know that globally 1 in 4 people lack access to safely managed water? And 3.6 billion people lack access to adequate sanitation?⠀

In rural Bolivia, disease and death are often attributed to contaminated water and insufficient/inaccessible sanitation.⠀

The country’s indigenous populace has historically been subjected to servitude and debt bo***ge, with their labour used to cultivate coffee.⠀

We believe water is the solution to transforming lives like Aide's.⠀

What exactly is a unit of impact?🤔⠀

We get asked this a lot. What do the numbers on our windows mean? How do we measure our impact? What are the ABCs we refer to?⠀⠀
⠀⠀
So here’s how we do it.👇⠀⠀
⠀⠀
Every project we support is broken down into its smallest quantifiable impact. ⠀⠀
⠀⠀
Let's say we're building a well in Ethiopia. We take the total cost of building this well and divide it by the number of people in the village it can serve, and the total years the well can last.⠀⠀
⠀⠀
This calculation helps us derive the giving impact. For example, 2p to give 1 person access to clean water for 1 day in a village in Ethiopia or £4.75 to give a rehabilitation workshop to a child in Colombia who has been a part of an illegal armed group or a gang or 50p to plant a tree in Kenya, so on and so forth.⠀⠀
⠀⠀
These units of impact are then mapped against the UN's 17 .⠀⠀

We then divide the 17 Global Goals into 3 easily comprehensible categories, our ABCs⠀
📈A for an Active Economy⠀
🫂B for a Beautiful Society⠀
🌍C for a Clean Earth.⠀

These are the numbers we publish in all our stores.⠀

Because we are not just about good coffee, we're about impact through coffee💪🏼!⠀

Let's bring back birds🦅🐦🦉!⠀
Did you know 1/5 of bird species in Europe is classified as Threatened or Near Threatened by extinction? Even common beloved species like the sparrow have undergone staggering losses in the last decade.⠀

Why do birds matter?⠀

From the smallest hummingbird to the largest raptor, birds occupy many different levels in food webs, and yes, bird sounds found in nature improve mood and alleviate stress. ⠀

Most importantly though, they are a keystone species in sustainable agriculture.⠀

Some birds pollinate flowering plants and act as seed dispersal agents. Others control insect and pest populations and protect vital farm crops.⠀

So how can we bring back birds?⠀

Drink bird-friendly coffee at ours😊. It’s a win-win-win: it’s delicious, economically beneficial to coffee farmers, and helps several species of birds from extinction.⠀

The forest of Betampona, on the East Coast of Madagascar is one of the last surviving lowland forests on the island and is home to thousands of endemic species🌳🐦. ⁣

The survival of this precious forest is threatened by the extreme poverty of the local population who rely on it for food, firewood, and shelter. ⁣

The project we support offers training to families living around the reserve to develop sustainable alternatives to the destructive practice of slash and burn agriculture (a.k.a. tavy). ⁣

The training helps people value and protect the land and to live off it in a sustainable yet profitable way.⁣

Have you read the report published by the IPCC earlier this month? ⚛️⁣

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) is the United Nations body for assessing the science related to climate change. ⁣

Drawing on the work of thousands of scientists. reports take about seven years to compile, making this recent report potentially the last warning before the world is set irrevocably on a path to climate breakdown!⁣

⚠️The report warns that at the current rate of greenhouse gas emissions, temperatures will soar to more than 3C, with catastrophic consequences⚠️.⁣

With soaring energy prices and the war in 🇺🇦, many countries – including the US, the UK, and the EU – are considering ramping up fossil fuels as part of their response.⁣

🌡️A response that will fuel the fire both literally and figuratively!🔥⁣

It's now or never to cut emissions and reach net zero by 2050. ⁣

Because coffee grown in the shade or shade-grown coffee production is the next best thing to a natural forest🌳🍄🐦🐛. ⁣

Several studies on farms in regions ranging from Central and South America to Indonesia over the past 25 years, prove that shade-grown coffee farms outshine sun-grown coffee farms across all the sustainability parameters!⁣

⚛️Reduced tillage and agrochemical use⁣

🍄Better soil structure and fertility, ⁣

🐦Increased numbers and species of birds⁣

🐛Improved pollination and natural peat control.⁣

🌬️Carbon sequestration, ⁣

That's some ecological service from shade-grown coffee, don't you think? ⁣

🌳🌳🌳Yes, we need more shade-coffee systems to conserve ecosystems and fight climate change💪!⁣

If 2020 was the year of endless lockdowns, 2021 saw the aftermath!! And what aftermath it was!⁣⁣

From unexpected project delays and skyrocketing supply chain costs to insurmountable challenges that come with scaling a business, 2021 was intense and brutal.⁣⁣

Our biggest lesson from it all?⁣⁣

We NEVER say our coffee is the best! We simply let the judges decide.⚖️Not just any judge though, but a Great Taste judge!

So, who ARE these experts🔎?

The judges are made up of top chefs and restaurateurs, people who run delis and farm shops, top food halls and retail buyers, acclaimed cooks, food writers, farmers and journalists. The diverse mix of judges ensures that every product is judged fairly and that nothing slips through the net!
