Josh Harbias is a financial services contractor and joined FSB in 2008. When Josh received a request for information from HMRC, he found it reassuring that the tax experts at FSB Tax Investigation Protection were in his corner.

FSB’s tax experts took it off my hands and dealt with all the heavy lifting. It was reassuring to know someone was in my corner. They had the time, knowledge, skills and understanding of HMRC, which was great, especially when business owners like me aren’t used to the process.

They contacted HMRC for me, and because they’re trained specialists, they knew how it worked, what information was being requested and the responses that were needed. They met HMRC in person with me, spoke to the tax inspector and helped me to deal with the pressure from HMRC.

I’m a director, I’m not an accountant, so I assumed everything was right. James Cordiner, an ex-HMRC inspector himself, who was dealing with my case, was able to catch a few errors from HMRC straight away that I wouldn’t have noticed. He challenged HMRC on any inconsistent information and asked for clarification.

My liability was nowhere near what they said it was, and James spotted this. He refused to accept the result from HMRC until he was satisfied.

The enquiry lasted five years and without FSB’s help it would have cost thousands of pounds to deal with – I think in excess of £10,000.

I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude and appreciation for the incredible perseverance, attention to detail and resolve James has shown throughout this longstanding enquiry. It would have been impossible for me to resolve things fairly and accurately without his assistance. The stress and toll of this enquiry has been immeasurably reduced.

A contact form can be one of the most important, and overlooked, elements of a website. This starts with an appealing and familiar design with a limited number of fields.

Is the form optimised for mobile? Where is it positioned? What is the button labelled? What colour?

Do your adverts ave a strong call to action (CTA) a statement or button that encourages visitors to take some kind of the desired action, such as signing up for your email list, downloading a free e-book, or making a purchase.

Your CTA should be clear and concise, and it should be placed prominently on the page. Make it easy for visitors to take the desired action, and consider using a CTA button if possible.

A USP is what makes your company stand out from its competitors and tells people what is special about it.

Having a passion for your products or services is great, but don’t forget that what you’re selling is initially to meet your prospect’s needs; not yours. Take some time to really analyse what your prospects will want from you.

When working on your USP it might help you to understand that there are three different types.

1. Perceived USP – This is where the customer perceives a difference or uniqueness in the product or service you offer.
2. Actual USP – As you’d imagine this is where there is an actual difference. So the “highest quality”, “exclusivity”.
3. Created USP – this is where you create a difference where no real difference exists. But that you offer something that your competitors don’t. Domino’s Pizza has a great example of this, with their “Pizza delivered in 30 minutes or it’s Free.”

What is the USP therefore for your business?
