***Attribute 1 - Understanding and practical application of engineering***

Following the workshop on attribute 1 - understanding and practical application of engineering last night, one of the questions that was asked, was how can I demonstrate understanding and knowledge of engineering when I work as the Client or as a Contractor on site? It appears that people that aren’t working in design, feel as if they need design experience to demonstrate this attribute. Rest assured, this isn’t the case and we’re going to explain why.

Client
A couple of our attendees acts in a Client role. They receive drawings, designs and specifications from the designer and review them. As a Client, the review process is to identify issues with the design. This can include health and safety issues, departures from standards, insufficient information, as well as many other issues. The Client then provides feedback as to what needs amending, with the reason why. This demonstrates “understanding and practical application of engineering”.

Contractor
One of our attendees raised the issue of working on site and the fact that they don’t undertake design. They were asked if they ever identify issues with drawings and plans on site, or find that conditions aren’t as expected whilst undertaking work? They responded that they had in both circumstances. Identifying issues that have an impact on the scheme demonstrates “understanding and practical application of engineering”. Ensure you talk about the action you took – did you raise a technical or tender query? What was the response? Was this sufficient to remedy the issue?

Remember to follow these key steps.
· Introduction - in both instances, start off with an introduction – set the scene
· Identify – How did you identify the problem. Relate it to relevant standards, policy, procedure and best practice. What is the result of the problem?
· Response – How did you manage the problem? What did you do? Did the Designer respond in a suitable manner?
· Conclusion – What was the outcome?

You have far more knowledge and understanding than you realise. Every single day you are applying engineering principles to your work. Have confidence in yourself.

Is there any scenario that you think you’d struggle to demonstrate this attribute? Feel free to pop it in the chat below and we will try to answer your queries.
